Faithful People Christian Church

Sunday Worship, November 5

In church tradition, Nov. 1 has been

called All Saints Day. On the first

Sunday of November, Florence

Christian will remember and honor

those who have died in the past

year. We will also give God thanks

for seven women and men who, by

their demonstrated servant leader-

ship, have been nominated by the

Memorial Plaque Committee and

affirmed by the Official Board as Me-

morial Plaque Recipients. These

plaques will be added to those al-

ready mounted on the memorial wall

of the chapel.

In addition, during our service, we

will celebrate Florence Christian’s

Memorial Fund and Permanent Fund

and dedicate the projects made pos-

sible by these resources.

The Memorial Fund is a way in

which persons can honor friends and

family at the time of death. Many

choose the Memorial Fund in lieu of

flowers. Such gifts are added to the

Memorial Fund and used for special

congregational projects as needs

arise. Gifts received are acknowl-

edged to the donor and the names

of those who donate are reported to

the family of the person honored.

The Florence Christian Church Per-

manent Fund is a growing resource

that enhances and extends the min-

istry of our congregation. Funds re-

ceived for the Permanent Fund are

invested and income is used annual-

ly. The funds are invested through

The Christian Church Foundation.

During our service on All Saints Sun-

day, we will recognize ten families

who have become a part of this min-

istry as Legacy Builders.

It is hoped that others will contribute

to the Permanent Fund through

gifts, bequests and other planned

giving programs. If you have ques-

tions about these ministries, please

speak to Glenna Galbraith, chair of

the Permanent Fund Committee or

one of the Permanent Fund trustees:

Ron Carroll, Lynn Caldwell, Todd

Reed, Josh Crabtree, Ken Mead or

our pastors.

Dear Florence Christian Church:

Thank you so much for all the calls, cards, gifts, cares and

concerns as I undergo treatment. Patti Martin

All Elders and Deacons are invited to attend this discus-

sion/training on pairing up to visit Florence Christian

members who are in the hospital. The goal is to pair an

Elder and a Deacon to provide monthly visitation.

This is a wonderful opportunity to connect with members

in the hospital and each other providing comfort accord-

ing to God’s grace through our Lord and Savior Jesus

Christ.

November 5, 2017

Florence Christian has a great con-

nection and commitment to Arca-

dia Park Senior Apartments, located

right next door. For those new to

our church family, Arcadia Park was

originally known as Florence Chris-

tian Services Center. That’s right,

Florence Christian Church built,

owned and operated this affordable

housing facility. Though we sold

the building in 2005, Florence Christian Church is still com-

mitted to serve Arcadia residents.

How are we doing that? Here’s a list of all of the ways that

we partner in ministry with our next door neighbors:

Weekly Chapel. Wednesdays at 2 PM, led by Pastor Susan,

join us for singing, study and prayer.

Bus Ministry. Three wonderful members (Ted DeAlba, Jim

Galbraith and Mike Voskuhl) drive the bus each Mon-

day for 11-12 residents to do some much needed

shopping. In addition, upon request, we occasionally

will take residents to special events as the bus is availa-

ble.

Action Ministry. Twenty-nine volunteers make this minis-

try happen under the leadership of Donna Murphy!

They bring non-perishable food items to 12-15 resi-

dents (including 3 church members) each month.

7 Hills Food Distribution. Phyllis Reed leads this ministry

with the wonderful assistance of Mike Voskhul and

Butch Carr. A program of Live Well Northern Kentucky,

we pick up fresh produce on the 2nd

Friday of each

month and take it to Arcadia. Cur-

rently serving 40+ people.

DZ Connection. Discover Zone

and Adventure Zone (after-school

program) are connecting with Arca-

dia at least once a month (games,

karaoke, yoga, ice cream social,

Halloween party, Christmas pro-

gram).

Worship at Florence Christian:

We invite Arcadia residents to worship with us, and to

make a spiritual home here. Currently, we have several

that are participating.

Home Touch/Pie Day Ministry. Once a month, several of

our church friends who reside at Arcadia receive a lov-

ing visit and a bag of activities, notes, and goodies

from our Home Touch and Pie Day ministry

teams. Linda Kraft is the team leader for Home Touch

and Glenna Galbraith is the team leader for Pie Day.

As you can see, this is an incredibly important ministry of

Florence Christian! All of these ministry activities are fueled

by our mission and core values (welcome radically, serve

boldly and forming faith every day). We are now looking at

ways that we can build and improve the scope of our Arca-

dia ministry as we continue building loving relationships

that address physical, spiritual and emotional needs of resi-

dents and our church community.

Want to help serve? Let us know. We’ll put you in touch

with the team leader of the area of ministry you’re most

passionate about.

TIME TO TRIM THE TREE! Week of Nov. 26

The first Sunday of Advent is Dec. 5! Come join us on Sun., Nov. 26th

, right after the

10:30 service, to put up the large tree in the sanctuary and hang wreaths in the

Giving Tree Sunday, Nov. 5 through Sunday, Dec. 3

Make someone’s Christmas special this year!

The Giving Tree will be decorated with ornaments reflect-

ing the needs of children and seniors in our community.

Take an ornament and shop for the item described on the

ornament. Then return that item

to the church office with the

ornament attached. It is very

important that the gift you return

has the ornament attached to it.

All gifts must be returned to the

church office by Sunday, Dec. 3, so

that they can be delivered to the

families in time for the holidays.

Please do not wrap the gift, but

you may return it in a Christ-

mas gift bag if you like.

Don’t feel like shopping?

Gift cards or cash donations

work just as well and will be

much appreciated.

Thank you for

supporting this

ministry!

Why should I register as an

organ donor?

Nearly 1,000 Kentuckians are currently

on waiting lists for life-saving organ

transplants. Some of these patients

will die waiting. Hundreds more are

waiting for life-enhancing cornea and

tissue transplants. You can give HOPE

simply by being a registered donor!

What are the ethics of

organ and tissue donation?

Faith leaders around the world support

such donations as expressions of the

highest humanitarian ideals. The gift of

an organ or tissue essential to the life

of another human being is consistent

with the principals of religious teach-

ings. If you have more questions, con-

tact your religious leader or visit

https://organdonor.gov/about/donors/

religion.html. From KY Organ Donor

Affiliates, Oct. 23, 2017.

While the number of donations and

success rates have increased in recent

years, so has medical science’s ability

to save more lives with organ trans-

plantation, as well as the need for do-

nated organs & tissues. A single organ

and tissue donor can help up to 50

people in need.

If you wish to give hope, please

join the Registry today:

Place your name on the Kentucky

Organ Donor Registry by visiting

www.donatelifeky.org.

Kentucky drivers may also enter

their names on the registry when

they renew their driver’s license at

their circuit clerk’s office.

Tell your family of your decision.

A GREENER THANKSGIVING

According to “RecycleWorks”, from

Thanksgiving to New Years Day, house-

hold waste increases by more than 25

percent. So, start off your holiday season

on the green foot by making a few small,

eco-friendly changes this Thanksgiving.

When shopping for your Thanksgiving

meal, keep two words in mind: organic

and local. These keywords will guarantee

a fresher, more nutritious meal. This year

shop your local turkey farm and your

farmers’ market.

If you are going over the river and

through the woods to grandmother’s

house for Thanksgiving, be sure to turn

down the thermostat and turn off the

lights to save energy while you’re gone.

Get out your nice china for the occasion.

Choose a tablecloth or other decorative

item you’ve been eying that you can reuse

in the future. Cloth napkins are a definite plus. If you’re

expecting a big crowd and disposable place settings are

your only choice, opt for biodegradable and compostable

utensils, napkins and plates, such as

those from the

Biodegradable Store.com.

Collect pretty leaves from your yard and

buy pumpkins from the farmers market

to make a table arrangement like in the

photo above.

Lastly, recycle all packaging and bever-

age containers! Happy Thanksgiving!

Care for God’s Creation

The Christian Church (Disciples

of Christ) is a movement for

wholeness in a fragmented

world. Out of our call to “do

justice,” we strive to demon-

strate the fullness of God’s

shalom through living out our

faith by caring for God’s creation.

From Hawaii and Washington to

Ontario and Florida, and every-

where in between, Disciples congregations are

caring for creation in unique and inspiring ways.

CREATION CARE

And let the peace of Christ rule

in your hearts, to which indeed

you were called in the one

body. And be thankful.

November is here and lots of fun and fantastic things

are in place at Discover Zone.

We at DZ are preparing for fall and Thanksgiving, and

working on our Christmas play, which is Dec. 8 at 6:30

PM. Once again we will offer a very “cute and fun”

evening with entertainment, cookies and Santa. All are

welcome to attend. We will have sign-up sheets availa-

ble for anyone who would like to donate cookies. Dona-

tions are always appreciated.

Discover Zone has recently been awarded two grants for

screening and assessment. The first gives us access to

the Deveroux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) which

is a tool that allows us to determine if there should be

concern in the developmental areas of self-control, initi-

ative and protective factors. This grant is funded

through the United Way and administered by North Key

Community Care.

Another exciting tool was awarded through 4C and Suc-

cess by 6. We have received the Battelle screening tool

and training. This tool is used by Boone County Schools

to screen incoming Kindergarten children.

With these tools we will collect data, ensure our children

are kindergarten-ready and allow for early intervention if

necessary.

Enrollment is holding steady and the

program is operating at near

capacity. Thank all of you for your

support.

Blessings, Julie

Research tells us that the most important influence in a

child’s faith is not whether they come to church or youth

group but their family’s faith practices. So, here at Florence

Christian, we are supporting parents and those raising chil-

dren and equipping them to guide their children’s faith

journeys with our monthly “Date Night” program.

4:45 PM – Drop your child off for an evening of fun. They

will eat dinner, play together, play games, do a craft and

watch a movie.

5 PM – Attend a Learning Session with other parents and

caretakers to be equipped to incorporate a family faith

practice into your family’s routine.

5:30 PM – Go! Use the next 3 ½ hours to do something

that supports your family.

9 PM – Pick your child up by 9 PM

NEW NURSERY WORKERS

We are pleased to welcome

to our team:

Kourtney Hedrick

Kourtney was born in Kentucky

and has lived here all her life.

She currently works at Citibank,

and has been there a little over

a year. She loves children be-

cause they are so honest and

genuine, and can always bring

a smile to your face without

even trying. Much of her experience comes from work-

ing with children in her family and her friends families.

She enjoys watching children learn and grow and finds

it rewarding to get to be a part of that!

Kaylee Ernest

Kaylee is a sophomore at

NKU. She is currently going to

school to be an elementary

school teacher. She has lived

in Northern Kentucky for all of

her 19 years and loves every-

thing about it. She is working

at both the Discover Zone

Preschool and Childcare Center as well as in the church

nursery!

The addition of these new workers means that we have

coverage of three workers for the 10:30 AM service. Now

we can separate older children from our littlest ones. As

we continue to evaluate which spaces will be best for

drop-off and pick-up, we will let you know! If you ever

have any questions or concerns, please contact Pastor

Diana. [email protected]

Children Worship & Wonder

Sundays, 9 AM & 10:30 AM – Ages 4-7

Children Worship & Wonder is a very special worship experience designed for younger chil-

dren. It is influenced by Montessori ideas and creates a welcoming environment to grow in rela-

tionship with God through ritual, telling our sacred stories, and providing ways for the children

to develop their theological imagination. Children are invited to leave the sanctuary after the

children’s blessing and are escorted to the Children’s Worship Center in the atrium. Parents are

invited to reunite with their children after the close of worship outside the Children’s Worship

Center in the atrium.

Kid’s Quest - Sundays, 9 AM and 10:30 AM for ages 8-13

Kid’s Quest is a special worship experience for our older children in an environ-

ment of worship leadership and learning. It incorporates the same scripture as in

“Big Church” and provides children ways to interactively engage with the scripture

lesson and the worship experience. Children are invited to leave the sanctuary

during the children’s blessing and are escorted to the chapel or atrium. After the

conclusion of their activities, they are escorted back into the sanctuary to rejoin

their families for communion.

Sunday worship is when all of us gather as the people of

God to praise God, to connect with God and each other.

At Florence Christian Church we encourage children to

begin worship in the sanctuary with their families. After the

music and opening prayer in a Children’s Blessing, one of

the pastors and the congregation bless the children to con-

tinue their worship in developmentally appropriate envi-

ronments. Special worship activities for children are also

available during both worship services.

Nursery Care: If you have a little one, nursery care is avail-

able at each service, so please make the choice that best

fits the needs of your family.

As always, children are welcome to worship in the Sanc-

tuary for the entirety of worship with their families. We

welcome their wiggles and giggles, cries and coos! They
