Enfoque Cultural 1-03 (The writing activity where you summarized a Spanish paragraph in English)

– I would have liked to see better summaries. Some people wrote more than 10 sentences, some wrote three short sentences.

– If you didn’t get 100%, it’s because your paragraph was too short or the information was completely wrong (wrong ages given, for exmaple)

– Some of you wrote SUPER detailed paragraphs in your own words. Even if every tiny detail wasn’t translated, I could see you took the time to answer this thoroughly. I wish I could award extra credit!!

Adjectives

1. Adjectives go after the noun they describe2. Adjectives need to agree in number with the

noun they describe3. Adjectives need to agree in gender with the

According to many of the adjectives people used in the homework, a lot of the class thinks I’m a boy.

Subject Verb Agreement• What is the Subject?– Basically the thing the sentence is about.

• What does this mean for you?– Basically, make sure you are conjugating the verb into

the correct form• How can I do this?– Look at the form of the verb in the question or

instructions. This is usually a pretty good hint.– Really think about who or what is doing the action

(verb). How would you conjugate that verb to illustrate that that person is doing the action?

Verbs• Only ONE conjugated verb is needed per sentence.– What does “Yo soy tengo dos lapices.” mean?– What does “Yo soy es agradable.” mean?

• Think about our conjugation charts. What verbs do tengo, soy, and es come from? What do those conjugations mean? (Who is doing the action)

How to talk about verbs as activities

• When you want to say you like to do an activity (verb) we use the infinitive.

• Unlike in English, where we use the –ing form of the verb.– I like running. Me gusta correr.– I like studying. Me gusta estudiar.

• However, in Spanish, whenever we use the –ing form of the verb, it ALWAYS and ONLY translates that the action is currently happening right now.

• So, we have to use the infinitive form (meaning the verb must end in –ar, -er, or –ir).

• We also use the infinitive when the verb is the subject of the sentence.– Running is boring. Correr es aburrido.

Possession

• To express that someone should or ought do something, use the deber + infinitive construction.

• Deber is a regular –ER verb

Ser vs. Estar

• “How you feel and where you are, always use the verb estar”

• So we use ser to describe people’s personalities.• But what happens if we use estar with adjectives?

• Adjectives change in meaning when we use them with estar instead of ser– Ustedes son listos.• The book told us to use ser with adjectives. What do you

think listo means with ser? (Hint: look at your vocab list)

– ¿Ustedes están listos?• I say this all the time! What do you think it means?• Do you think I’m asking you if you’re all smart? Think about

when I ask this question. What do you think it means?

Ways to (possibly) (unknowingly) offend people in Spanish

• Use estar when you should use ser– Or vice-versa

• Ella es muy bonita• Ella está muy bonita.

• Ella es delgada.• Ella está delgada.

Can you guess the difference in meaning?

• Ella es/está alegre.• Él es/ está viejo.• Nosotros somos/estamos nerviosos.• Yo soy/estoy cansado.• Tú eres/estás mal.• Ustedes son/están tontos.• La profesora es/está aburrida.

El verbo gustar• We use the verb “gustar” to express likes

and dislikes (places, activities, things… never people)

• We NEVER use gustar to talk about liking people

• Gustar means “to please”• Gustar needs an indirect object pronoun• Otherwise, when we conjugate it, we

would be saying“I please the pizza” or “I please to dance”– Note that “please” here is a verb, not a

polite request.• So in Spanish, when we talk about likes

and dislikes, we are literally saying “______ is pleasing to me”

• The form of the verb gustar depends on the subject of our sentence.
