Read the news report about pedestrians running a big risk on Malaysian roads.
PEALING JAYA: A large number o pedestrians are getting killed in traffic accidentseach year. Te majority o them are children and senior citizens. Te deaths were mainlydue to hit-and-run accidents, jaywalking, crossing busy roads and dangerous driving.
562 pedestrians are killed annually mostly in urban areas in the past three years.
Karen Goonting, who heads the Human Factors and Accident Costing Unit at theMalaysian Institute o Road Saety Research, highlighted other police statistics whichshowed that 40% o pedestrian casualties were children, with at least 40% o them killedor severely injured. Most o the victims were aged six to 10. Pedestrians aged 66 to 70years made up the highest number o atalities, according to the statistics. More than70% o pedestrian casualties happened because people did not use the acilities providedor they crossed roads at the wrong places. While pedestrian deaths only represented lessthan 10% o the total o road accident atalities each year, the number recorded was acause or concern.”
Federal raffic Chie Senior Assistant Commissioner Datuk Abd Aziz Yuso said,“Pedestrians ranked third in road atalities, afer motorists and motorcyclists. Tat’squite a high number. Measures to reduce this must be taken as soon as possible,”
SAC Aziz said pedestrians were easily one o the most vulnerable people on theroad, so they must take extra precautions and remain vigilant at all times. I advisedpedestrians to always use pedestrian pathways and crossings. Te local authoritiesshould have more acilities or pedestrians, especially sidewalks. It would be good oreveryone i more o such acilities are built.”
“Motorists too have a role to play in ensuring the saety o pedestrians. Teyshould be mindul o pedestrians and not bully them. Tey should be more consideratetowards pedestrians. Mutual respect between the two groups is vital towards reducingthe number o pedestrian deaths.”
Drivers and motorcyclists are required by law to provide right o way to pedestrians.Tey can be fined up to RM300 per offence, under Section 75 o the Road ransportAct. Te Act subjects pedestrians to the same penalty i they cross a road within 100mo an overhead bridge or zebra crossing, or i they are caught jaywalking.
