Day One: Entrance Ticket

• Write three historical facts about the Dominican Republic?

• Begin with an opening discussion reviewing yesterday's historical lesson about the Dominican Republic: Did the US have a right to get involved in the Dominican Republic's war for independence against Haiti?

Day One: Annexation

• What is annexation?

• The incorporation of some territory into another geo-political entity.

• In 1871, President Grant wanted to annex Santo Domingo.

• In 1871, why would it be important for President Grant to try and annex Santo Domingo? (Why would the US want this?)

• Give the students small pieces of paper.

• Have them answer/predict this question

• Turn in papers and watch the film on Grant

discrimination that will never subside– They could never be fully

integrated into society

• Burden on society in the United States

• Encourage rebellion of slaves

Liberia• Through purchase and

conquest, United States began a colony.

• Became independent country (Liberia) in 1847.

• Proposed free nation for freed slaves.
