The Kampong History

The Founder: Raden Arya Wangsakara, a prince

and a islamic scholar from Sumedang, who moves

with his companion to Tangerang to avoid Mataram

pressure and Dipati Ukur rebellion

Page 7: Religious Tourism Kampong: Integration of Historical Kampong Lengkong Ulama to the Modern City Serpong?

The Short History

He determined the location based on the selected

section of Cisadane River, which incidentally is

facing the Qiblah (Mukri Mian, 1983)

The kampong became a basis of islamic teaching

and preaching in Tangerang until now, and

expirienced many historical events of Indonesia

The scholars and the students (santri) also has been

recognized for the skills in calligraphy nationally

and internationally (Septayuda Tata, 2011)

The Existing Conditions

From the data of vegetation and topography, this

kampong is really hidden and sealed from other

region, like a gated community, but formed by

nature

Page 9: Religious Tourism Kampong: Integration of Historical Kampong Lengkong Ulama to the Modern City Serpong?

The Existing Conditions

Once, the entrance to the site of this kampong can

be characterized through the river (east side) and

the land (west side)

Page 10: Religious Tourism Kampong: Integration of Historical Kampong Lengkong Ulama to the Modern City Serpong?

The Existing Conditions

The new access was created on the eastern side –

the access for pedestrian which near the bridge and

the access for a vehicle which near the development

of international school – which was provided by the

school for the villagers

Page 11: Religious Tourism Kampong: Integration of Historical Kampong Lengkong Ulama to the Modern City Serpong?

The Existing Conditions

The pattern of this kampong is linear and

centralized to the mosque. The position of all the

buildings is almost 100% following the position of

the Qiblah, especially the core. The elongated part

of the houses facing north and south (Khamdevi,

2012)

Page 12: Religious Tourism Kampong: Integration of Historical Kampong Lengkong Ulama to the Modern City Serpong?

The Existing Conditions

The historic mosque, which is close to the river edge

and the historic cemetery on the hill, both share a

history relationship of the kampong founder –

Raden Arya Wangsakara, which reminds us with the

patterns of the Sultan's or Sunan's cemetery in Java

tradition

Page 13: Religious Tourism Kampong: Integration of Historical Kampong Lengkong Ulama to the Modern City Serpong?

The Existing Conditions

Besides dwellings, there are also public facilities

such as: mosque, little mosque (musholla), islamic

boarding school, cemeteries, and madrasas

Page 14: Religious Tourism Kampong: Integration of Historical Kampong Lengkong Ulama to the Modern City Serpong?

The Existing Conditions

The history objects that still exist today in the this

kampong, such as: Masjid Al Muttaqin, the cemetery

of Raden Arya Wangsakara, the cemetery of Kyai

Mustaqim and the old house of Raden Arya

Wangsakara wife (Tjandrasasmita Uka, 2009), and

the cemetery of Kyai Azhari, Azhari little mosque

and the pattern of kampong, especially that follows

the Qiblah direction (Mian, 1983 and Khamdevi,

2012)

The Existing Conditions

Transformation of the house: Sundanese stilt house with “Julang Ngapak” Roof Style -> Betawi or Bantenese style -> ordinary kampong house

Transformation of the mosque: The old mosque has two-story elongated pyramid roof (limas), which is similar to the Great Mosque of Sang Cipta Rasa in Cirebon. The short minaret with arab style, was built by the descendants of arab Hadramawt (Yemen) in 1900's. Now, the mosque was changed totally, which is now like ordinary kampong mosque

The improvement of all houses;

Conclusions

With the idea of Kampong Lengkong Ulama as religious tourism kampong, this kampong could be integrated with BSD city, and could contribute to the city as an alternative for recreation area in the center of the city, and also could support conservation efforts of the community independently. The existence of these kampong is expected to be survived and sustainable, so that all its historical and cultural heritage in it can be passed down from generation to generation.
