Religion in Hollywood Hollywood portrays religion in three

different lights.

In the name of religion, people

do bad things.

You’re on unreligious expert,

Robert Langdon’s side.

Once again the religious people

seem crazy.

Angels & DemonsThis film demonizes religion by showing that some people will do terrible things in the name of God, or if they believe it is the will of God.

Example from film: one priest arranges for the murder of four Cardinals as part of a plan to unite the Catholic Church

This can range from small things like arguments among a few people, to

murder and wars

Page 5: Religious diversity in film

This film portrayed the Catholic Church as being very traditional and having a lot of rules.“Our ancient traditions are threatened by a modern world.”

In this film, some members of the church felt like they needed to do whatever was necessary to protect the traditions of the church.

Is it possible for religion to exist in our modern society?

Science vs. ReligionThis film does a good job of addressing the struggles

between science and religionThe Illuminati are a group of enlightened scholars who were dedicated to scientific truth. They were persecuted for questioning the church on scientific matters.

Can science and religion peacefully coexist?

Makes religious people seem weird or crazy.

Bruce AlmightyThis film satirizes religion by portraying God in a very casual way, and showing us how hilarious it would be if Jim Carrey had all of God’s powers.

“God, why do you hate me?”

Bruce believes that God is ignoring him because he’s been running into some bad luck lately. So, God gives all of his powers to Bruce to see if he could do a better job.

Page 17: Religious diversity in film

Bruce answers prayers by giving everyone what they want because it’s a quick fix.

After that turns out to be chaotic, Bruce learns a valuable lesson. People can “be the miracle” and do things for themselves if they just put in a little hard work.

“People want me to do everything for them, but what they don’t realize is that they have

the power.”

Life of Brian Brian is mistaken to

be Christ.

He spends his life as Christ would have.

Brian was persecuted like Christ was.

And died as Christ did.
