Religion and Belief profiles for Somerset Introduction At the time of the 2011 Census, 346,597 Somerset residents identified themselves as being affiliated to a religion, equating to 65% of the county’s population. A total of 141,071 residents (27%) reported having no religion. The remaining 8% of residents elected not to answer this question on their Census return. This document provides profiles for some of Somerset’s main religious groups, as identified in the 2011 Census: • Christian (339,211 residents) • Buddhist (1,612 residents) • Muslim (1,470 residents) • Pagan (1,147 residents) • Hindu (506 residents) The profiles give a snapshot of Somerset’s population as of Census Day, 28 March 2011. Of the other major world religions, there were a total of 337 Jewish residents and 100 Sikh residents recorded in the Census. In addition there were 34 ‘other’ religious affiliations, the most common being Mixed Religion (750), Spiritualist (369), Spiritual (200) and Wicca (158). Detailed characteristic data (e.g., age/gender breakdown) for ‘other’ religions (which includes Pagan) have yet to be published. • Buddhism is the second most prevalent religion in Somerset after Christian.
• Around two-thirds were born in the UK, with around a third born in Asia.
• Mendip has the highest concentrations, particularly in and around Glastonbury.
• People of working age form the main population demographic, with comparatively few children and older people.

• Muslim is the third most prevalent religion in Somerset after Christian and Buddhist.
• Around half are of Asian ethnicity, of which the majority are Bangladeshi. Around a quarter are of White ethnicity.
• Just over half identify themselves as British or English.
• Two-thirds are aged under 35, with a notably high proportion of men aged 25-34.
• The highest concentrations of residents are in urban areas, particularly parts of Taunton.
