WHAT IS PYPLOK®?Fast, Reliable and Tamper Proof fittings with operating pressures over 9000 PSI (620 Bar). A hydraulically powered compression tool swages the fitting over the pipe or tube plastically deforming the fitting. This process forms a 360° radial compression around the pipe forming a permanent leak free seal.

In 1968 McDonnell Aircraft in St. Louis, Mo first developed the technology to affect a 360° radial compression swage as a replacement for threaded AN/MS tube fittings on the F-4 fighter. Threaded joints were less reliable in applications of high stresses and loads. McDonnell Aircraft licensed a company, named at that time, Deutsch Metal Components in Gardena, California, to manufacture the fittings for them that were used on the F-4 Fighter. As time went by, Deutsch extended the product material range, configurations, and pressures to become the leading supplier of Mechanically Attached Fittings (MAF’s) to the entire scope of Aerospace/Defense Industry applications in the United States, Canada, Brazil, China, and Europe.

In 1978, Deutsch Metal Components expanded the aerospace tube fitting technology to patent a NPS pipe and OD tube fitting system called PYPLOK®. Originally developed for the US Navy, it expanded over the years to provide products and solutions to the Petrochemical market as well as other industrial process plants. As an equal to or better than replacement for welding or brazing, it found acceptance in many areas. The product line eventually expanded to include fittings to join pipe and tube up to 2”NPS and 66MM for a range of pipe schedules and tube wall thickness; in a variety of materials such as Stainless Steel (types 316, Duplex and Super Duplex), Carbon Steel, Copper Nickel (CUNI), Copper and Aluminum. Testing and qualification to all industry standards over the years has shown the PYPLOK® System to be superior to a welded system as well as being a major cost and time savings on an overall installed basis.

In 2004, the family owners of Deutsch Metal Components decided to sell their company to private equity investors from the United Kingdom. The company’s named was subsequently changed to Design Metal Connections. With new ownership, and being predominantly an Aerospace/Defense tube fitting supplier, a decision was made to divest the PYPLOK® Product Line and to forego that business for which it served and concentrate on the aerospace tube fitting market.

Tube-Mac Industries Ltd., was a longtime user of PYPLOK® and proponent/advocate of non-welded technology in their own right as designers, manufacturers, and installers of a 37° flared and retain ring flanged systems for pressures up to 10,000PSI (690) and pipe sizes to 10” NPS. Design Metal Connections offered to sell Tube-Mac the PYPLOK® Product line complete with all engineering, tooling, and manufacturing processes required to continue the manufacturing of PYPLOK® in the same manner as before in order to service all markets outside of the Aeronautics Industry. In January of 2007, the sale was completed and Tube-Mac, as an ISO 9001:2008 certified manufacturer, began to produce and market the PYPLOK® Product line. PYPLOK® fittings are ABS, CRN DNV and NAVSEA approved.

THE ADVANTAGES OF PYPLOK’S SEALING CHARACTERISTICS.TUBE-MAC® PYPLOK® FITTINGS incorporates unique sealing capabilities. It utilizes four non-metallic o-rings, which make PYPLOK® FITTINGS adaptable to normal pipe and tube tolerances and surface conditions. The outer o-ring seals prevents outside contaminants from entering the system. The TUBE-MAC® PYPLOK® system is extremely versatile: Ideal for gaseous systems as well as fluids. Also available in various shapes: tees, elbows, 45° and 90°, reducers and custom ends.

IntroductionThe installation and subsequent inspection of fittings is the most expensive part of joining and maintaining piping systems. Regardless of the type of piping system or material, there may be numerous threaded, welded and brazed fittings. These traditional types of fittings are costly to install as they require much labor and time.

The Tube-Mac PYPLOK® Mechanically Attached Fitting System is the best alternative to threaded, welded, or brazed joints. The PYPLOK® system incorporates an external swaging process as a way of joining pipe ends together. The external radial swaging process compresses the fitting onto the pipe or tube, which results in a permanent, leak-tight joint.

Tube-Mac Industries® manufactures PYPLOK® fittings in all standard configurations. (straights, 45° & 90° elbows, adapter, tees, reducers and flanged ends).

PYPLOK® configurations permit for all permanent ends or combination of permanent and separable ends. Separable ends include ANSI, SAE and ISO Flanged as well as JIC 37°, ORFS (O-ring face seal according to SAE J1453). NPT, BSPP and DIN 24° fittings.

PYPLOK® fittings are available in Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel Type 316 and 70/30 CuNi (Copper Nickel).

PYPLOK® fittings are available in other materials such as Super Duplex Stainless Steel, Brass or Navy Brass and Aluminum.Please consult factory.

The tools you need to begin to get rid of costly hot work.The Tube-Mac Pyplok® pipe connecting system requires a few lightweight, portable installation tools:1. Marking/Inspection Gauge. Used for marking insertion depth on pipe and verifying after swage dimensions.2. Head Assembly. Attaches to power unit and, when actuated, swages fittings onto pipe.3. Hose. 10,000 psi Hydraulic Hose. 10 feet long.4. Power Unit. Hydraulically actuated swaging tool provides force to a radially swage fittings onto pipe.5. Pump. Marking and Inspection GaugeMarking and inspection gauges are combined into one gauge.

Marking GaugeThe gauge has a pin and a slot for marking along the centerline. Position the pin with the end of the pipe and make a mark inside the slot for locating the fitting on the pipe.

Inspection GaugeInspection gauges have two cutouts one on each of the long sides of the gauge.Use these cutouts to verify the pipe minimum and maximum OD.The gauge has a cutout on the middle of the short side of the gauge.This cutout has three points for verifying the after swage dimension of the joint.The gauges are marked with the part number, and size of pipe.

Pipe PreparationPipe End PreparationPipe end preparation is important to assure good contact area between the pipe and the seal within the fitting. The preparation involves the following steps:

Pipe Cutting Pipe DeburringOutside Diameter Clean-up

Pipe CuttingUsing a straight edge, make sure that the pipe end is straight to allow the fitting to slide over the pipe upon insertion. Protect the pipe from wrench and vise grip damage, and cut the pipe to proper length. Tube-Mac® highly recommended that the cut is less than 3° off square of the pipe end, but a cut up to 5° off square is acceptable.

Pipe DeburringPipe deburring and removal of raised nicks and burrs eliminates the potential for damage to the fitting seals during pipe insertion. A 30° chamfer will help in the pipe insertion.

Outside Diameter Clean UpClean the outside surface of the pipe for a minimum of one pipe diameter length. Blend surface flaws, scratches, concavities and flats, paint and galvanizing with emery cloth, without reducing the diameter below the minimum.

Pre-Installation ProceduresSelect the proper Tube-Mac Pyplok tooling, i.e.; power unit and head assembly.

Prepare pipe ends.

Verify the pipe OD and ensure it is free of any damage.

Ensure fitting seals are in-place.

Select appropriate Marking/Inspection gauge. All gauges are marked with applicable Pipe or O.D. Tube size.

Using PMAX gauge, check the outside diameter of the pipe. Verify the pipe size by placing the fitting over the pipe and examine the fit.

Using the PMIN gauge verify the PMIN dimension by placing it over the outside diameter of the pipe. The PMIN gauge must NOT fit over the pipe. This check helps to ensure proper

Marking/Inspection gauge use.

Place the gauge on the pipe with the stop pin pressed against the pipe end.

Apply an insertion mark through the marking window.

CAUTION: Hydraulic pressure for the swage tools must not exceed 10,250 PSI. Minimum of 80 PSI shop air is required for operation of the Pneumatic pump.

Installation ProcedureInsert the pipe into the fitting keeping the rotation and twisting to a minimum. You will encounter slight resistance when inserting the pipe past the seal ring.Position the end of the fitting over the pipe installation mark so that some portion of the mark is visible. This is important to ensure proper inserting depth and to complete an acceptable swage.

Install the lower die block assembly onto the upper piston of the power unit.

CAUTION: Full engagement of the head with the power unit is critical for the safety of the operator and the tool.

Connect the hydraulic power supplyActivate the hydraulic power supply to the proper pressure and then release it after reaching the desired pressure.Disengage the yoke from the power unit - the swaging is now complete.

NOTE: Typically, there are two raised bands near each end of a Tube-Mac Pyplok® fitting called seal diameter and retention diameter seal bands. In some cases, you must swage fittings more than once on each end of the fitting to compress the seal diameter and retention diameter bands. Whether it takes one, two or three swages depends on the type and size of the fitting and the condition of the swage dies.

Details are provided in the Pyplok® Installation Manual as well as during training, sessions provided by Tube-Mac®.

Pipe Insertion VerificationInspect the pipe insertion markVerify that the fitting covers a portion of the pipe installation mark and a portion is clearly visibleIn the event that the installation mark is not clearly visible, use the inspection mark to verify proper insertion.Position the marking tool against the fitting end, placing the side with the pin stop away from the pipe, and orient the inspection mark to verify that some portion of the inspection mark is visible in the gauge window or between the dot and the fitting end.

Limited WarrantyTUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES WARRANTS ITS PRODUCTS TO BE FREE FROM VISIBLE DEFECTS IN MATERIALS AND WORKMANSHIP FOR A PERIOD OF ONE (1) YEAR FOLLOWING THE DATE OF DELIVERY TO THE ORIGINAL BUYER. THE WARRANTY EXTENDS ONLY TO THE ORIGINAL BUYER.

TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES makes no warranty, express or implied, as to the merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose except as stated in this Warranty.

This Warranty shall be in lieu of any other Warranty, whether express or implied, by this Agreement or at law or in equity or by any statute or otherwise. The Buyer agrees that the foregoing shall be pleaded by TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES as an estopel in any action brought by the Buyer against TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES.

The Buyer agrees that porosity or pin holes in steel may not be commercially detectable. Therefore, TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES offers no warranty with respect to steel integrity and TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES shall not be liable for any damages, claims, injuries or otherwise caused by or in any way related to steel integrity.

TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES’ liability shall be limited to the repair or replacement of defective product(s) free of charge at the seller’s sole option and discretion. TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES reserves the right at its sole option and discretion to refund a portion or all of the purchase price paid by the Buyer in lieu of any other obligations TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES has under this Warranty. In no event shall TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES be liable for any incidental, consequential, general or special damage of any kind or nature whatsoever including but not limited to loss of profit arising out of any incident(s) involving the use or utilization of the product and/or system covered under this Warranty. In no event shall TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES be liable for any personal injury or any special or general damages arising out of the personal injury of any kind or nature whatsoever.

TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES shall not be liable under this Warranty or otherwise if damages to the product are caused as a result of any type of accident or in the event the product and/or system was subject to alteration, abuse, misuse, extraordinary use of any kind whatsoever, improper maintenance or operation or improper or unauthorized repair.

TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES makes no warranty whatsoever as to any product and/or system covered by this Warranty which has been repaired or altered by anyone other than TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES or authorized personnel.

TUBE-MAC® INDUSTRIES neither assumes nor authorizes any person to assume for it any other liable in connection with the sale of such products and/or systems.
