Frank was in the past often threatened by the Irish police for his work in exposing their brutality. In a letter to a friend from Brixton Jail he states: " The Free State police are intent on getting me back into their jurisdiction and it looks a s if they are even going to the extent of f abricating evidence to do so. Now I know f or a fact that they couldn't possibly convict me for Fallon 's death simply because I wasn't t here. However they think they have a trump c ard by accusing me of murder. Any other c harge under the present circumstances could b e fought off fairly confidently. My solicitor, M r. Birnberg, says that if I am to have any c hance of beating this extradition thing then I must have evidence to the effect that I am and h ave been active in political circles in Ireland. . If you could do anything in this r espect I would be grateful because nothing would give me greater pleasure at present t han to give Dublin Castle and Company a good k ick up the arse." Release Frank Kern FHA KEANE, an Irish socialist r epublinan. is in Brixton jail await- ing extradition proceedings. He is charged with killing a policeman earned Fallon during a bank r obbery, said to ire the work of militant republicans, wkich took p lace in Dublin six milks ago. Keane says it Is a franw up, organised by the notorious special p olitical police arm of Dublin Castle, to 'nail' a fighter against Irish capitalism and British i mperialism. W ithin hours of the robbery the p olice issued the names and a ddresses of seven men from whom t hey wanted •help' with their inquiries. All seven are militant s ocialist republicans No warrants were Issued thereby s howing that the police,to say the l east, didn't have any clear evi- dence. Indeed they could hardly have hail time to even begin the i nvestigation. H owever, they did have a lint o f names of people they wantetittr ' get'. Amongst those named its S ean Morrissey, who had be an e ditor of the Irish Trotskyistmaga- zine Workers' Republic. Another was Joe Dillon, whose past expel , ience of the Irish political pollee s heds a flood of light on the current case and the normal methods of the I rish police. In 1966 Dillon was framed by the S pecial Detective Unit (political p olice) of Dublin Castle for robbery a nd given a five year sentence. A left wing member of the IRA moving t owards marxism, he was a natural t arget for the special police. Before his arrest he had be..a offered bribes by the Special Branch to inform on the IRA. When he refused, he was told that 'the B ranch' would "get him". And t hey did. He was arrested for an attrapted r obbery that had taken place nix M onths earlier. In an identification p arade none of the witnessei i dentified Dillon. Nevertheless a year later he was tried and given f ive .years. A n international campaign was organised to demand Dillon's r elease. Eventually the sentence was reduced to three years. The same people who framed him then are attempting it again, now for murder — which in Ireland still carries the death penalty for k illing a policeman. In order to extradite Frank Keane, they will have to present a Large part of their 'evidence' to the O ld Street Magistrates Court. T hey are not above fabricating s uch 'evidence'. It is part of the e veryday work of the Irish political p olice. W ith the present political crisis in the 'Republic', the gov- ernment desperately needs scape- goats — and they need to annihilate groups and individuals who want to c ombine a militant non-sectarian s ocial policy with aggressive anti- itnperialism. K eane was victimised in the past. When he was 'named' by the p olice, he wrote a letter to the Irish Times. He denied knowledge o f the killing, but refused to help t he police. He explained that he had been harried and persecuted in the past f or his politics. The police had p reviously attempted to frame him on a robbery charge and for attemp- ting to burn down a Fianna Fail h eadquarters. H e was jailed and ill-treated on the robbery charge and finally Just released. -h- S ocialists In Britainaye a duty t o aid Frank Keane. Help keep F rank out of the hands of the brutal !HMI police.
