1. Trace a breath

• Nose• Pharynx- throat• Larynx- voice box• Trachea- windpipe• 2 Bronchi• 2 Lungs• Alveoli

2. Lungs

• Large paired organs in the Thoracic cavity, protected by ribs and pleural membrane

• Inspiration- Active phase, lungs expand

• Expiration- passive phase, lungs relax

• Diaphragm- horizontal muscle of breathing, under lungs

3.Ventilation- breathing, air drawn in and out

4&5. Gas exchange in Lungs and Tissue

• External respiration- exchange of gasses in the lungs. Blood gives off CO2 and picks up O2.

• Internal respiration- exchange of gasses between blood and cells. Blood gives off O2 to the cells and picks up CO2

• O2 is carried in hemoglobin of RBC

• Co2 is carried in Plasma as Bicarbonate ion

6. Regulation of Respiratory Rates

• Adults- 12-20/ minute

• Child- 20 and up/ minute

Breathing is rhythmic, involuntary and is regulated by the respiratory center in the Brain Stem.
