Economic development opportunity
• 1.2 billion people on this earth do not have access to electricity.• An even higher number do not have access to proper sanitation, including drinking water.• Most of this population live in Africa, in Southeast Asia and in Latin America.
Given the shear geographical size of the territories involved, in the near term, it is unrealistic to access thesepopulations by way of interconnected transmission systems.
The solution must be localized networks - off-grid microgrids.
The deliberate focus of REIDS is on microgrid applications for:• Islands• Remote villages• Emergency situations – earthquakes, tsunamis, refugee camps, etc..• Remote mining operations• “Fringe” networks• Military bases

ENERGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE | NANYANG TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY |
• Implementation of localized network infrastructures requires that the energy production is also localized.• To-date, the energy supply for many islands and isolated villages, however sporadic, is overwhelmingly reliant
on diesel generation.• The main issue is not so much environmental impact but fuel procurement costs, primarily due to complex and
cumbersome supply chains.
Renewable energies are the low cost solution toward localized energy production.
In the context of off-grid microgrids applications, focus should be on:
• Sustained acceptance by local populations by ensuring that their qualities of life are sustainablyenhanced.
• Ease of system adaptations, as the local electrification increases requires a «plug and play» approach.
• Rational energy end-use and less so on energy efficiency.
• Ruggedness & resilience and less so on optimization.
• Operation & Maintenance costs and less so on initial investment costs.

• Solving engineering, economic, environmental and societal energy transition challenges for off-grid communities.
• Partnering with Southeast Asia private, public and civil society organizations.
Microgrid R&D
• Implementing large-scale microgrid system demonstrations under Southeast Asia climatic conditions. • Designing and executing equipment performance assessment tests in a neutral environment under in-
the-field operating conditions.
Microgrid systems demonstration and equipment testing
• Broadly disseminating the REIDS message in Southeast Asia: conference participations, seminars, executive education – Singapore and off-site.
• Road-mapping energy transition strategies in Southeast Asia.• Enrolling REIDS public and private sector members in Southeast Asia.
