Agenda

Course Description

Recent advances in technology and research can influence the course of recovery of the person with a brain injury. Current issues with plotting the trajectories of these specific patients’ recoveries, coupled with practicing within an environment that demands total complex patient management with an attention to detail is the focus of this one day conference.

A discussion on the patho-physiology of brain injury and the management of concussion will provide a basic review of the topic. Other discussions will center around management of behavioral and sensory impairments, as well as linking the participant with novel treatment approaches. Formal presentations will be accompanied by question and answer periods with general discussion.

This course will provide neurologists, neurosurgeons, internists, family physicians, and physiatrists with updates in the clinical management and rehabilitation of brain injury.

Educational Objectives

• Recognize the importance that cultural factors play in the context of community reintegration and utilize available resources to partner with in the management of patients with brain injury.

• Apply a system for management of cognitive and behavioral deficits in the management of patients with mild brain injury.

Activity Information

• Utilize a basic vision screening tool to assess for visual impairments in the brain injury population.

• Utilize prognostication recommendations to determine the optimum treatment of brain injury at each point of recovery in the continuum.

• Identify the current assessment and management techniques of symptoms resulting from concussion /TBI and appropriately integrate these techniques in the care of patients.

• Implement novel approaches to influence functional and structural connectivity in the injured brain using neuroprosthetic applications.

• Apply the use of available personal technology in real life scenarios/cases of patients with brain injury.
