• In French, you must, as in English conjugate the verb.

• You have already conjugated être.

• Conjugating is when you make the subject and verb match.

• In order to conjugate a regular –er verb in French, the first thing you must do is drop the –er.

• This gives you what we call the “root” or “stem”.

• You will add the endings to this root.

• In English, this is like dropping the “to” and adding the “s” in the 3rd person singular case.

• The next slide contains the endings needed to be added to the root for each subject pronoun.

• You will do this each time you have a subject.

• When the verb is conjugated it has three meanings; am watching, do watch, and watch.

• Tu regardes will translate as : You are watching; you do watch; and you watch.

• You do not need any other verb

• YOU CAN ONLY HAVE ONE CONJUGATED VERB PER SUBJECT UNLESS THE VERBS ARE CONNECTED BY A CONJUNCTION LIKE AND, BUT, OR OR.

• They are eating.

• Ils mangent.

• We are playing.

• Nous jouons.

• I like.

• J’aime.
