Did you know there is lots of important security informaon and links on the NHW web page of the Orston Parish website? Please have a look! Spring Crime Prevention Crime analysis shows a seasonal increase in shed and garage breaks between April and June as the warmer weather prompts people to start gardening, DIY, and cycling. There is also a greater demand for tools and garden equipment fuelling an increase in thefts. Garden sheds are targeted by thieves because they are often overlooked when it comes to security. The value of the contents, such as garden mowers, strimmers and bicycles or even motorbikes, can add up to many hundreds of pounds. It is therefore imperative to secure the shed door with at least one heavy duty hasp and staple and a closed-shackle padlock. Also, shed alarms are cheap, and easy to install. Other prevention advice includes: • Secure the hinges with ‘clutch head’’/ ‘one-way’ screws • Keeping valuable items locked and out of sight by covering windows • Think about chaining and/or padlocking items within the shed • Security mark items in the shed to make them less attractive to steal • If you’re in your garden make sure you keep doors and windows secure • Never leave garden equipment unattended, even for short periods of time Is your post safe? A resident has reported that a bank account was opened in their name. It would appear that criminals did this with the intention of intercepting the mail when dropped into the outside letterbox. The resident would have not had any Idea that it had happened. A neighbour did see a suspicious woman go to the letter box but it was before the postman had been. The documents were subsequently delivered. The incident has been registered using the online fraud website and the bank concerned contacted. The key point is that the resident has an outdoor letter box (which is now being changed) and is at work during the day and would not miss mail that was not expected. This may have been part of a money laundering exercise or simple identity theft. Earlier this month there was a similar incident in Flawborough. Outside letter boxes are particularly vulnerable to identity theft/ theft. You may wish to consider using a conventional ‘in the door’ style box if your external box cannot be made properly secure. Please remain vigilant and report any incidents to the police on ‘101’. PLEASE NOTE It ’ s very important to report crimes as otherwise rural communities may not be given the required level of resourcing they deserve.
