Minnesota Quilters is pleased to announce our 2017 Quilter of
the Year, Karen McTavish. Karen McTavish is an internationally
known quilter, teacher, lecturer, and author who has been teaching
professionally since 2000. She has been quilting on a longarm since
1997 fulfilling her two passions: creativity and inspiration. Karen

allow any machine quilter to replicate traditional “hand-quilted”
effects as well as quilting today’s modern quilts. She has been
featured on television shows, such as Simply Quilts on PBS and
writes articles for national quilting magazines and journals. Karen
has lectured and has judged quilt shows across the country. She is
the author of seven books: Quilting for Show 1 & 2, Whitework
Quilting, Mastering the Art of McTavishing 1 & 2, Secrets of
Elemental Quilting and Custom Curves. She has been a full -time
professional quilter since 1997 – supporting her family through her
craft. In addition to displaying her quilts, Karen will be on the
faculty at our 2017 show and conference. We look forward to seeing
more of her and her work next June!

Registration Book 5
”The Lion King Cherrywood Challenge”This amazing collection of
20 x 20 small quilts is the result of a challenge by Cherrywood
Fabrics that used the theme “The Lion King.” With the permission of
Disney, participants were influenced by the story, music, costumes
and message of the movie and Broadway musical, as well as the
mighty king of the jungle. The jaw-dropping exhibit by 120 artists
is held together by cohesive size, color, theme and fabric.
”Two Friends, Many Quilts: A Collection of the Collaborative,
Award-Winning Work of Marilyn Badger and Claudia Clark Myers”This
special exhibit is a collection of some of the twenty-two quilts
that Marilyn and Claudia have made together. In 2001, they
collaborated on “Mediterranean Beauty”, a raffle quilt which won
several awards, including a Judge’s Choice at the AQS Paducah Show
and Best of Show at the Minnesota Quilter’s Conference and Show in
St Cloud. This sparked the beginning of a long quilting friendship
that reaches from Duluth, Minnesota to St George, Utah. They
continue to treasure their creative relationship and hope you enjoy
seeing the interesting changes in their quilting evolution that
have taken place over the last fifteen years.
”BIG and small” - Contemporary Quilters-Minneapolis MN People
love small things - babies, kittens, miniatures. Think about how
small we are as compared to the universe. People love BIG things -
the biggest pumpkin at the State Fair was 1143 pounds, Lincoln in
his Memorial is 19 feet tall, the World’s Largest Ball of Twine in
Darwin is 12 feet in diameter. Our quilted thirty creations will be
either Big or small, or maybe both. Take a look and see what you
discover!
”A is for Applique” - Students of Pat Cox-Minneapolis MNEach
year the students of Pat Cox organize an exhibit at the Minnesota
Quilters Show and Conference to display their current applique
works and each year the exhibit is truly extraordinary. Come to the
show to view these twelve quilts and see applique as has never been
done before.
”The Japanese Inspired Quilts of Patricia Cox”Patricia
Cox-Minneapolis MNThirty-seven Japanese inspired quilts made over
the years by Patricia Cox, one of the founding members of Minnesota
Quilters. The quilts were exhibited at the Owatonna Art Center in
2016.
”Quilted Quotes Challenge” - Shelly Ricci’s Art Quilt Group A
fun exhibit of fifteen 16 x 16 quilts inspired by famous
quotes.
”2016 Red and White Challenge” - Block Swappers of Blue Earth
MNTwelve large red and white quilts ranging in size from full to
queen created in response to the group’s 2016 challenge. The quilts
demonstrate traditional, modern and original designs that you will
not want to miss.
”Nine Patch Challenge” - Needle Nuts-Prior Lake MN Nine
experienced sewing friends, nine months. The rules were to make two
3” finished blocks for each group member including the sewist for a
total of 18 blocks per month. No whites, no solids and darks had to
be at the corner position. Then make a quilt any size, any pattern
but the blocks had to be used on the front of the quilt.
”Granite City Rocks” - St. Cloud Heritage QuiltersEach
participant picked one of two fabrics that resemble the two types
of granite quarried in the St. Cloud area. A minimum of one square
inch of this fabric has to be used in their quilt top and it also
has to be used for the binding. The fabric has to be be easily
found in their design. They cannot not dye, paint or stitch over it
to change it. As part of our Heritage, each participant has to
choose a traditional block with a name. This block is what their
design is based on. One or more blocks can be made to fit within
the 24” X 24” footprint. Sashing or
borders can be added as well as any embellishments they like
(beads, buttons, couched threads, applique, sequins, etc.). The
block can be changed by making it wonky, twisting it, abstracting
it, using non-traditional fabrics for it’s construction or leaving
it a traditional block/blocks.
“Navigating Lake Superior with Mariner’s Compass Quilts”Northern
Lights Machine Quilters Guild-Duluth MNThis special exhibit of
20-24 wall hanging size quilts (each around 62 x 62) presents
interpretations of the “Vintage Compass” pattern by Judy Niemeyer,
taught to our guild by certified instructor Jodie Madison. This
collection is a tribute to the Mariner’s Compass pattern, one of
the earliest quilt patterns available to quiltmakers. Before the
magnetic compass was available, early mariners depended on a wind
chart called the wind rose. The wind rose gradually evolved into
the compass rose on nautical maps and continued to be a useful
decorative feature on charts and maps for centuries. It is likely
that quilters were inspired by the varied designs used to depict
the compass rose.
“My Blogging Adventure” - Suzy Webster-Apple Valley MN A
showcase of about twenty poster sized quilts created during my
first two years of blogging; the quilts represent what I have
learned during that time. (Suzy Webster was the winner of the 2016
Minnesota Quilters Show and Conference Stationary Machine Quilting
Award for her quilt “Kaboom”.)
“The Power of Three” - Twin Cities Quilting-St. Paul MN In
composition odd numbers of elements are more dynamic than groupings
of elements equally numbered. The basic idea of the rule is that
objects arranged or grouped in odd numbers are more appealing,
memorable and effective. This challenge asked quilters to use the
power of three in an original design.
”2016 Minnesota Quilters Mystery Quilt “The concept for the 2016
Minnesota Quilters Mystery Quilt was to create an opportunity for a
larger group of people to participate in an educational opportunity
with Minnesota Quilters, Inc, outreach to members who live in
outstate Minnesota, and as a way to reach potential new members to
Minnesota Quilters. 160 people participated in the 2016 Minnesota
Quilters Mystery Quilt that was designed by Kristin Lawson of “a
little crispy”. There was an online Facebook group where
participants shared questions and pictures of their progress on the
quilt. It was a fun year.
“A Take on Modern” - Minneapolis Modern Quilt GuildSee 25-30
quilts, wall hanging to bed quilt size, that look at all the ways
modern quilting is interpreted.
“Idiom Challenge” - Evening Star Quilters-Mahtomedi MN
Twenty-three members of the guild each produced an 18x24 inch quilt
based upon a randomly chosen idiom such as “The Grass is Always
Greener,” ”Eye Candy,” etc. Members were asked to keep their idiom
a secret, and given nine months to come up with an idea and make
their quilt. At a special “reveal” meeting, the quilts were hung
with no descriptions, and members were given a game sheet with a
multiple choice listing of the idioms selected. Winners received
quilt shop gift certificates and other prizes.
“Scavenger Hunt Challenge” - Minnesota Quilters, Inc The
challenge was to incorporate into a quilt as many items a possible
from a given list of thirty-two items. There was no restriction as
far as size, block choice, using applique, quilting style, or
embellishments. Just their imagination!
“Minnesota Wild” - Challenge Chicks-Minneapolis-St. Paul Each
quilter will depict something wild that has a Minnesota theme, such
as Minnesota wildflowers, birds, animals, etc. The quilts will be 8
x 24 and will be hanging on a stick from a tree native to
Minnesota.

Youth Exhibit 2017Youth are our future!
We know that children who grow up around moms and grandmas,
aunties, and neighbors who sew and quilt are curious about what
they’re doing. Many children learn to sew from these loved-ones. We
applaud that. Some children and teens also are learning to sew from
4-H and scout activities. Wherever you (or children you know) are
learning to sew and make quilts, please share the quilts you make
with all of us!
We’re calling all youth quilters and sewers 18 and younger to
enter quilts, large or small, into our annual show in Duluth this
coming June!
There’s no exhibit fee - everyone 18 and younger can enter • for
free. Make your quilts large, medium, or small--there are no size •
restrictions. Each quilt must have 3 layers (a front, batting, and
backing) • held together with hand or machine stitching. Each quilt
must have a sleeve sewn to the top of the back so it may be
hung.
At least 3/4 (75%) of the assembly and sewing on the quilt •
must be done by the youth participant. Quilting may be done by
another person and does not count in the 75%Quilts must be
pre-registered to be shown. See the entry • form on this page, and
be sure to send us your entry by or before April 15, 2017. The
address is on the form. Deliver your quilt(s) between Mon. May 22,
2017 and Sat. • May 27, 2017 to the locations listed on page 8 of
this booklet.
Ribbons will be awarded and each entrant will be entered into a
drawing for a prize. Everyone who enters a quilt will also
receive:
a Certificate of Participation, and • a 1-day pass to visit the
show and see the quilts. •
Visit our website at www.mnquilt.org for the latest show
information, or contact Paulette Marini and Kathie Simon Frank at
[email protected] for answers to your questions about entering
a quilt in the annual MQ Show.
We look forward to seeing your quilts!

Judged Quilt Competition DefinitionsJudged Definitions
QuiltEach quilt entered must have three distinct layers (quilt
top, batting, backing), and must be quilted through all layers. No
lined quilt backs allowed.
Quilt EntrantEntrant is the person who constructed the quilt
top. Each entrant may enter up to two quilts but only one in any
single category.
Two Person QuiltAny quilt that two people worked on, in any way,
during the construction, quilting or finishing. This includes
quilting done for hire. All work may be done by hand, by machine,
or any combination.
Track Machine QuiltingThe machine needle is moved across the
quilt surface.
Stationary Machine QuiltingThe quilt is moved under the machine
needle such as with a home sewing machine.
Judged Category Descriptions
Appliqué A quilt that uses appliqué, either hand or machine, as
the predominant construction technique. It may be hand or ma-chine
quilted. It may be completely constructed and quilted by one
person, or the quilting may be done by a second per-son. There are
three (3) categories: Large 1 Person, Large 2 Person, and
Small.
ArtA quilt made from an original design, reflecting innovative
construction and design techniques, theme or subject mat-ter and/or
materials. No commercial patterns or copies of previous works
allowed. Quilts must be made predominantly of fabric, have three
layers, and contain hand or machine quilting. This is a single
category for 1 or 2 persons and any size quilt.
Group QuiltAny quilt created by three or more people. All work
may be done by hand, by machine, or any combination.
MiniatureAny quilt measuring 24 inches or less on each side,
with the overall pattern reflecting proportionately reduced scale,
and any individual blocks no larger than 4 inches square. All work
may be done by hand or by machine and by only one person.
Mixed TechniquesA quilt that uses a balanced combination of
appliqué and piecing. It may be completely constructed and quilted
by one person, or the quilting may be done by a second per-son.
There are three (3) categories: Large 1 Person, Large 2 Person, and
Small.
ModernModern quilts are functional, and are inspired by modern
design. Minimalism, asymmetry, expansive negative space, and
alternate grid work are often part of the composition, as are
improvisational piecing, high contrast, and solid fabrics. This is
a single category for 1 or 2 persons and a quilt of any size.
Other TechniquesA quilt that uses a special technique(s) to
develop the design of the top such as whole cloth, cathedral
window, embroi-dery, etc. It may include piecing, any type of
appliqué, em-bellishments, or surface design techniques. This is a
single category for 1 or 2 persons and a quilt of any size.
PictorialA quilt depicting a person, place, thing, or scene in a
real-istic or abstract manner. It may include piecing, any type of
appliqué, embellishments, or surface design techniques. It may be
completely constructed and quilted by one person or the quilting
may be done by a second person. This is a single category for 1 or
2 persons and a quilt of any size.
PiecedA quilt that uses piecing, by hand or machine, as the
pre-dominant construction technique. It may be hand or ma-chine
quilted. It may be completely constructed by one per-son, or the
quilting may be done by a second person. There are three (3)
categories: Large 1 Person, Large 2 Person, and Small.
Workmanship - NEW!Any Row by Row, Mystery, Kit, or Quilt Shop
Block of the Month quilt may be entered into this category. It may
include piecing or appliqué, and the work may be done by hand or
machine. It may be completely constructed and quilted by one
person, or the quilting may be done by a second person. Since many
of the design and/or fabric decisions will have been made by
someone other than the entrant, the judges will focus on
workmanship - how well the entrant has used the given elements to
create the finished quilt. This is a single category for 1 or 2
persons.

LECTURES THURSDAY
TL12A: The Art of Realistic Fabric ArtLecturer: Bonnie
LangenfeldThursday 10:00 amEssential art elements and techniques
for realism such as lines of perspective, using color for depth,
fabric choices and stitch techniques will be covered in this
forty-five minute lecture by Bonnie Langenfeld. Many pictures of
her in-progress work and completed pieces will be shown.
TL03N: Let’s Get Hexed! Lecturer: Mickey DepreThursday 12:00
NoonAn interactive lecture/demo/audience participation event that
includes a small trunk show of English Paper Pieced quilts, some
made by Mickey, some antique. She will take you through basting a
Hexie during the Power Point presentation that will be filled with
tips and tricks about English Paper Piecing! She will provide the
EPP papers; audience needs to bring two 3.5″ squares of fabric, one
pin, one needle, basting thread and small scissors. Thimble is
optional.
TL11P: Random Acts of QuiltingLecturer: Mary Elizabeth
KinchThursday 2:00 pm An educational, and entertaining look at
“real life” quilting presented along with a trunk show. Great ideas
and lessons learned (some the hard way) are shared and some of the
sacrosanct rules that can and should be broken are revealed. Topics
include the chaos theory of quilting, fabric shockers, industry
secrets (did you know fabrics can “explode”?), approaches to
borders and bindings, and other brilliant quilting insights.
TL04P: Judges’ PanelLecturers: Kate Eelkema & Judy
TaylorThursday 5:00 pmJoin this years’ judges as they explain their
process for judging quilts at national shows. Discover how they
determine winning piecing, quilting, binding, use of color,
embellishing and overall creativity. Once you discover what they
are looking for you will have a better idea of how to perfect your
techniques before the next judged competition. Free to all entrants
in MQ’s Judged Exhibit.
TL19E: Two Friends – Many Quilts Lecturer: Claudia Clark Myers
& Marilyn BadgerThursday 6:30 pm Dessert Lecture This lecture
accompanies a collection of some of the twenty-two quilts that
Marilyn and Claudia have made together. In 2001, they collaborated
on “Mediterranean Beauty”, a raffle quilt which won several awards,
including a Judges Choice at the AQS Paducah Show and Best of Show
at the Minnesota Quilter’s Show and Conference in St Cloud. This
sparked the beginning of a long quilting friendship that reaches
from Duluth, Minnesota to St George, Utah. They continue to
treasure their creative relationship and hope you enjoy seeing the
interesting changes in their quilting evolution that have taken
place over the last fifteen years.
FRIDAY
FL18A: “The Lion King” Lecturer: Karla OverlandFriday 8:00 am
Breakfast LectureKarla Overland is the owner of Cherrywood Fabrics,
the originator of “The Lion King” Challenge. This amazing
collection of 20 x 20 small quilts was inspired by the story,
music, costumes and message of the movie and Broadway musical, as
well as the mighty king of the jungle. The jaw-dropping exhibit by
120 artists was selected from 356 submissions and is held together
by cohesive size, color, theme and fabric. FL01A: Lions, Llamas,
and Bears! Oh, MyLecturer: Barbara Yates BeasleyFriday 10:00
amBarbara Yates Beasley knows all about animals, their special
healing skills, their personalities and attitudes, and those
captivating eyes! She will share many works with us created to
honor members of the animal kingdom in fabric collage. With her
camera always at the ready, she captures images of animals wherever
she goes. These later become the basis for her patterns and a
roadmap to the animal’s soul. By capturing and communicating a
sense of joy or connection and highlighting the animal world around
us, Barbara hopes to foster a deeper understanding and compassion
for the animals—and for ourselves.
FL16P: Working Through Quilting Design Paralysis – How I Choose
to Quilt My TopsLecturer: Kari SchellFriday 2:00 pmThe biggest
challenge most longarm quilters face is, “How do I quilt this?”
Kari has worked through a process to analyze a quilt top and then
create a series of unique designs in Art and Stitch to complement
the quilt. She will share her technique with you during this
lecture and will work through a number of “real life” examples.
This lecture provides information for all quilters (not just those
with Art and Stitch or other digitizing software).
SATURDAY
SL09A: A Quilt Artist’s JourneyLecturer: Lola JenkinsSaturday
10:00 amLola Jenkins’ art evolved out of great personal tragedy in
her life, yet she is one of the warmest and funniest teachers and
lecturers presenting on the quilting circuit today. Walk with her
as she describes how she learned to create with no formal
instruction and limited resources. She presents a hilariously funny
but very informative and skillful talk about her unique and
passionate vision.
SL06N : Strip Your StashLecturer: Gudrun ErlaSaturday 12:00
NoonGudrun Erla has designed and published multiple strip patterns
and books, and a ruler called the Stripology Ruler. This lecture
will take you through her strip collecting process, how she chooses
strips for quilts, color combination and choices in scrappy quilts,
and how to choose background fabrics and accents to pull your
scrappy goodness together. She will demonstrate how the Stripology
Ruler works and show multiple quilts along the way.
SL07P: A Practical Approach to ColorLecturer: Becky
GoldsmithSaturday 2:00 pmYou walk around with your eyes open - but
how much do you really see? It’s amazing what you can learn about
color just by paying attention! Becky will share what she has
figured out about color over the years, and how you can use this
knowledge in your own quilts.Single Lecture Prices:
