1920 – 1921 First psychiatric nursing program in

Canada – (Brandon, Manitoba)

1920 – 1968 Three year diploma

1969 – 1995 Two year diploma

Since 1995 Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing

2011 Masters Psychiatric Nursing

CLINICAL & PRACTICUM

• Clinical and practicum experiences provide opportunities for experiential learning of curriculum concepts and content linked to attaining the entry‐level competencies

• Clinical practice hours must include:

i. A minimum of 775 clinical hours in psychiatric nursing

ii. A minimum of 225 clinical hour’s in general medical/surgical nursing

• Must include a clinical in acute psychiatry & senior practicum at a minimum

PSYCHIATRIC NURSING PRACTICE

• Practices in variety of settings: psychiatric facilities, hospitals (including medicine & the emergency departments), crisis services, community mental health programs for children, adolescents, adults & seniors, correctional facilities and programs, long term care facilities

• Work as: staff nurse, manager, counsellor, clinical specialist, team leader, supervisor, CEO, executive directors, faculty, researcher, case manager and consultant

RPNRC MOBILITY & ASSESSMENT PROJECT18

By:

1) Documenting the enablers and barriers to the mobility of RPNs

2) Raising the awareness and understanding of the psychiatric nursing profession and competencies

3) Establishing options to move forward in the labour market for RPNs

GOAL: Improve the mobility, assessment and integration of psychiatric nursing in Canada

STAKEHOLDER RELATIONS19

Objectives:

• raise awareness of the initiative

• engage the stakeholder groups

• facilitate roundtable discussions and confirm options to address the recognition of RPNs

• continue the dialogue with the stakeholder groups

GOAL: engage, inform and educate to recognize and understand the RPN competencies and qualifications and identify steps to improve mobility .
