Registered Nurse Residency Program – Kaweah Delta Health Care District

Health care today is heading toward a severe nursing shortage. Acute care facilities report vacancy rates of 10% to 18%, with turnover rates at 13% in general, and 18% to 50% for new graduate nurses. Higher patient acuities, advanced technologies, and heavier workloads are increasing the stress and anxiety of new nurses transitioning from academia to professional practice. This can have a negative impact on patient safety and outcomes.

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) Report of 2010 recommended implementation of nurse residency programs (NRPs) to reduce nurse turnover by supporting nurses transitioning into new practice. The IOM recognizes the changing landscape of academic preparation of nurses and encourages continued education and support of NRPs as critical to successfully develop and integrate newly licensed nurses into the health care team.

Kaweah Delta is meeting this challenge by implementing the Registered Nurse Residency

Program (RNRP). All new graduate registered nurses hired by KDHCD participate in the 12 month program designed to facilitate professional development and improve patient outcomes. The program includes monthly sessions covering topics like clinical decision making, time management, and communication, as well as time in the LHMSkills lab to practice skills including managing IVs, chest tubes, IUCs, and head to toe assessments. Debriefing sessions at each session allow reflection on practice to share and learn from each other’s experience. Comments from our RN residents confirm the value of the program:“Useful information for new RN’s.”“It’s nice to know I’m not the only one feeling the way I do and the process of transitioning.”“It gave me an opportunity to learn in a non-stressful environment.”“I liked the hands-on learning, lots of questions answered!”“We are not forgotten about as new grads, the extra support is great.”

Since the RNRP debut in August 2015, 37 participants from all over KDHCD are enjoying the program with more to come. Our goal of moving new nurses from novice to expert to provide optimum patient care for our community is well supported by our Registered Nurse Residency Program.

Distinguished Physician: Dr. Javed

By: Sonia Duran-Aguilar

We met with Dr. Javed to recognize him as the Distinguished Physician for the Non-Acute NPC. He was pleasantly surprised. I was happy to have Visalia Dialysis Management and our Renal Services and Oncology Director in attendance.

Nadia is one of the dependable charge nurses at 3W. She is always willing to lend a helping hand. 3W can get incredibly busy and when Nadia is Charge she makes it a point to be in the room with the floor nurse when the patient arrives. She always greets the patients in a respectful manner. I've worked with a lot of different charge nurses throughout the hospital and Nadia is a step above the rest. She is not only an advocate for her patients but also her nurses. She is a great nurse and I hope to be as great a nurse as her one day. 3W is lucky to have her.

High quality physician communication is a major driver of positive patient experiences. Doctors are greatly admired and are often viewed as the leader of care by patients and their families. It is no wonder that three of the top six areas that have the greatest impact on our patients’ overall rating of care are linked to interactions with our physicians.

When our patients are surveyed, they rate their doctors on the following three questions:

1. During this hospital stay, how often did doctors treat you with courtesy and respect?

2. During this hospital stay, how often did doctors listen carefully to you?

3. During this hospital stay, how often did doctors explain things in a way you could understand?

The answer options that our patients select from are Always, Usually, Sometimes, and Never. We only get credit for an answer of Always.

Below is a list of providers that have outperformed the national benchmark in physician communication over the last six months (July through December 2015). Only physicians who received at least six surveys were included in the list.

Thank you for being a standout in physician communication!

Here are five keys tips (from John Hopkins University) to improve patients’ perceptions of physicians:

1. Introduce oneself

2. Explain one’s role in the patient’s care

3. Touch the patient

4. Ask open ended questions such as “How are you feeling today?”

5. Sit down with the patient

We appreciate your partnership in helping us exceed our patients’ expectations and providing them with world class service.
