Counting on YOU! A special thank you to the one hundred and five students who participated in this semester's session of Counting on You. Counting on You is an after school literacy and numeracy program taught by teachers at Mississauga Secondary School. Students attend twice per week from 2:45 p.m. to 4:05 p.m., they receive a snack, and the classes are absolutely free. The curriculum taught in the Counting on You class aligns with what is being taught in the student's Math or English class. Thank you to Ms. Eldridge, Ms. Hadidi, Ms. Wilder, Mr. Stelea, and Mr. Nashed for your time, effort, and energy. If you would like your son or daughter to participate in Counting on You in second semester, please listen for our voice messaging announcements, and have your son or daughter pick up a form from the Guidance office. Announcements will begin in the third week of February.

International Club News Congratulations Mississauga Secondary, 2016 was a great year for giving.

Thank you again to everyone who contributed to the 12th Annual “Cram-A-Cruiser” Holiday Fundraiser at Mississauga Secondary. This year we filled 5 CRUISERS with food, clothing and toys. The new toys were donated to “Toys for Tots”, food donations and Winter clothing went to Open Door Food Bank, to support our Mississauga

community. Peel Police with the assistance of Constable Taylor and fellow Officers were extremely grateful for our efforts and community support.

This year International Club hosted Winter Fest, a new event at Mississauga Secondary. We raised funds from the bake sale, photo booth and games over a period of two days as we kicked off a local and global initiative to raise funds and awareness for Environmental and Aboriginal issues. We will continue this theme into 2017 as we look forward to our Annual Community Culture Night at MSS that will take place on Thursday, May 4th. This culture night celebration will see a uniting of cultures from around the world. There will be food, live performances, fashion show, games and much more. Proceeds from this event will go to The Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund. We look forward to a successful 2017 that we hope will be just as great as 2016, or even better!

Grade 9 Explore High Skills We had a successful first semester for our new Explore High Skills Program for grade 9 students. Through focused learning activities in science class, workshops for personal management and mindfulness, and training in CPR and First Aid, our 42 EHS students have had a taste of potential pathways in Health and Wellness and connections with their own personal wellness. They capped their semester off with a field trip to the Ontario Science Centre to participate in Voyage to Mars, an interactive simulation that involved teamwork, problem-solving, critical thinking and effective communication.

Grade 11 & 12 Specialist High Skills Major Program This year our two grade 11 SHSM Leadership classes led the school in Wellness Week in November, while completing several components required for their program such as: CPR-C with AED and Standard First Aid Certification Workshop Infection Control Certification Workshop Experiential Learning through a Personal Wellness 5-part series with Youth

Wellness Network Reach Ahead activity - Kinesiology Days at the University of Waterloo

What’s Happening?

From the Student Services Department…

Guidance counsellors are currently reviewing student course selections for 2017-18. Students have the opportunity to make changes to these selections. Every student has been given their Course Selection Sign-off form and their Status Sheet with the semester 2 report card package with instructions on how to make any necessary changes. Sign-Off forms are due back to semester 2 homeroom teachers on Wednesday, February 8.

Counsellors are also continuing to work closely with grade 12 students to ensure the successful completion of Ontario Secondary School Diploma requirements. Part of this requirement is the completion of community service hours. Students must have their community involvement hours in by the end of May for processing.

Guidance resources for students and parents can be found on the MSS website under Student Services and at www.myblueprint.ca/peel.
