Celebrating our 22nd Year of Summer Adventure Camps!

For more than 20 years, Oakland Yard Summer Camps have given kids of all ages an exciting, fun and safe place to grow and make friends. Throughout the summer we offer dozens of different outdoor active programs for children to participate in with lots and lots of “extras”.

There’s the daily check in, where the campers are greeted by name by the staff and us upon arrival. There are the camps during the morning – over 50 to choose from – including some of the coolest ones in Oakland County.

At lunchtime, kids meet at the patio and unwind over a delicious meal and something cool to drink. Then there’s the afternoon highlight... our 200’ slip-n’-slide (the longest around) keeps the kids cool during the hot summer days!

Our afternoon camp, Camp FreeStyle, lets kids partake in an abundance of other activities. And there’s the largest sand box in town with plenty of water for castle contests. Of course, we also have our OYA Bucks! Our official OYA camp currency allows kids to earn and spend “money” at camp!

We pride ourselves on having an outstanding and caring staff – dedicated, conscientious, energetic counselors who are the reason why your child goes home healthy, happy,

satisfied and exhausted from a full day of fun.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you and your kids here this summer!

n Counselor-In-Training (CIT) Program I Ages 14 & 15

Get your child some real world experience this summer while keeping them active and engaged. Being an Oakland Yard Counselor-In-Training (CIT) will help prepare them for the work world in front of them. The commitment is only three weeks out of the summer and all CIT’s get to set the weeks they want to get involved.

CIT’s will report directly to the Oakland Yard camp director who will oversee this program. CIT’s will assist the adult counselor throughout their week of service with all of the activities the campers will experience while at Oakland Yard.

• All CIT applicants must interview like all potential employees.

• CIT’s may request a certification of community service for their records.

• All CIT’s will be provided staff apparel for free.

• All CIT’s accepted need to attend a two-hour workshop prior to camp. Date TBA.

• To apply for the CIT program please visit www.oaklandyard.com for an application and details.

Our #1 HOT TIP for all CIT applicants is… DON’T let your parents do it for you! YOU make the contact, YOU fill out the application and YOU schedule the interview!

n Car Town Does your little guy or gal love cars, trucks or anything with wheels? This camp is designed with them in mind. All campers will get their own personal battery powered 4-wheeler to ride and use throughout the week while they learn the ‘rules of the road’. Prior to getting the keys for some all out fun, campers will have to earn their driver’s license by taking a written and practical driving test. Not to worry moms and dads, these cars don’t go very fast, and the written test is designed for all to pass.

Our overall message to the kids will be to show them the challenges and obstacles we parents go through to keep our cars on the road – buying or leasing, repairs, maintenance, insurance, and the laws.

Throughout the week, campers will learn how to handle themselves while parking, negotiating four-ways stops, merging into traffic, and obeying several types of traffic signs.

If this sounds like fun, just wait until camp time. We promise to not only educate your little driver wannabe, but we also plan on entertaining them as well!

n Building Up Girls This week is all about empowering girls through improving confidence and self esteem. Due to flight times and pilot schedules, punctuality for this camp is critical, and registration closes 1 week prior to the first day of camp. Campers will each get approximately the same total amount of stick time over the course of the week.

Monday - Campers learn the fundamentals of flight, how to preflight an aircraft, the basics of aircraft instruments and Aircraft OPS. Classroom time 2.5 hours.

Tuesday - Campers will spend their time in the air in concentrating on preflight, turns, climbs, and descents, flight altitude and basic maneuvers. Flight time 2.5 hours.

Wednesday - Preflight, maneuvers, pattern work and take offs & landings will be the day’s topics. Flight time 2.5 hours.

Thursday - The week will culminate in a cross-country trip to Kalamazoo Airport where campers will have lunch and a chance to tour the air museum. Flight time 4.0 hours.

Friday - Reserved as a make-up day in case of inclement weather. If any days are cancelled due to weather, the time will be made up Friday.

Campers will receive a flight logbook in which they will be able to log their stick time. Campers will each get approximately the same total amount of stick time over the course of the week. This will then be signed by their instructor and can later be applied as flight credit toward their private pilot’s license. The FAA requires 40 hours of flight time with an instructor for licensing.

Cost includes fuel, aircraft rental, museum entrance fee, lunch on Thursday, and flight logbook.

n 12 and Under TennisTennis has changed! Based on the new “10 and Under Tennis” which has a modified set of rules for the sports youngest players, we are teaching 12 and Under Tennis. The courts are smaller and easier to cover, balls bounce lower and move slower through the air, racquets are sized for smaller hands and new scoring rules allow for more and shorter matches. Let us introduce your kids to a game they will love now, and they will grow into a sport they can enjoy for a lifetime. Campers are encouraged to bring their own racquets; those without racquets can borrow one from OYA.

n Zombie Apocalypse Survival Camp Rumor has it that lurking in the woods behind the Oakland Yard fields, the zombies are multiplying. It’s only a matter of time before they discover the unsuspecting campers. They can smell the fun the kids are having and they don’t like it. Please, help us defeat the zombies by learning the ins-and-outs of zombie survival training. Campers will learn how to best defend against the coming horde. They will learn the best way to find or build shelter, build a fire, purify water, read a map/GPS, cook food out-of-doors (including which plants and bugs are edible when you run out) and zombie proof their encampment. Kids will also learn techniques for blending in with the zombies so that when they are (eventually) outnumbered, they can survive undetected. Time is running out, please hurry and help us save the Oakland Yard campers by learning this important life skill.
