LOGGING IN
To access the system, you need a User Name and Password. These will be issued
by the SPTO or your National Tourism Office.

THE HOME SCREEN
The Home Screen shows all the modules that are available in the T-Stats system.
Each module contains a certain type of data or a specific function.
The modules are as follows:
• Tourist Arrivals – air tourist arrivals by country showing the number of arrivals
by purpose of visit and country of residence each month.
• Cruise Arrivals – cruise arrivals by country showing the number of arrivals
each month.
• Air & Cruise Surveys – findings from air and cruise surveys carried out in
various countries using the SPTO Survey Toolkit.
• Library – library of documents and useful Internet links.
• Projects – monitoring and evaluation of SPTO projects (for SPTO staff only).
• Administration – RTRC system management section (for SPTO
administrators only).

TOURIST ARRIVALS
There are six options in the Air Arrivals module, as follows:
• Monthly Arrivals Report
• Build Table & Chart
• Country of Residence by Month
• Purpose of Visit by Month
• Add, Edit & Delete Data

Monthly Arrivals Report
This module allows you to generate a table showing the number of air tourist arrivals
by month, for any selected year. Data for all countries is shown.
Firstly, select the year you are interested in.
The report shows the number of arrivals for each month of the year (where there are
no data, the cells are left blank). The % Change figures show the change in the
number of arrivals compared to the same month in the previous year.
Note: this data is derived from the Country of Residence (not Purpose of Visit) arrivals database.

Build Table and Chart
The Build Table and Chart option allows you to create your own table and chart, in
any format you like. You can then export these if you want to use them in documents
or presentations, or for further analysis in Excel.
On the left hand side of the screen in a light blue box in which you select the
parameters that will define the data you want in your table.
Firstly chose whether you want to analyse the data by Country of Residence or Purpose of Visit.

Section: Country of Residence
Firstly select the country you are interested in from the drop down menu. Then
select the county or countries whose air arrivals you would like to include in your
table and chart, by clicking in the relevant boxes. You can select as many countries
as you want.

Finally, select Monthly or Yearly to choose whether you want to see data presented
monthly or annually, and the period (Years from/to) that you are interested in. Then
click on Go.
The data appears in a table on the right hand side, with the chart showing below the
table. The chart always represents the data in the table. So if you change the format
of the table, the chart will also change.

You can change the type of chart using the drop down menu. Line charts work best
for much of the data in the RTRC.
In its current format, the
chart is not too useful. It
would be better to compare
one year with another
rather than have all the
months showing
sequentially on the chart.

To do this, go to the
table and move the Year
by dragging it from the
rows to the columns.
With the mouse, grab
(click on) the Year button
and drag it to the column
area.

The chart now changes to show a new line for each year.
Click on Show Values to show the values on the chart. If you want to export the
chart, click on the export button. There is also an export facility above the table,
should you want to export that into Excel (or other) format.

Section: Purpose of Visit
Building a table and chart by Purpose of Visit is very similar to doing it by Country of
Residence. Firstly select the country you are interested in (the Arrival Country), then
the purpose of visit you wish to analyse. You can choose between UNWTO or
Country purpose of visits.
As with the Country of Residence Build Table and Chart, next select whether you
want to view data monthly or yearly, and the period of the data.

Country of Residence by Month
This option allows you to analyse air arrivals by country of residence.
In the light blue box at the top of the screen, choose the country you want to analyse
arrivals data for.
Then select the year, also from the drop down menu. Finally, click on Go.

The table shows the number of air arrivals for the country selected, and for the year
selected.
The table can be exported into Excel, PDF or Word format, by clicking on the export
icon on the light brown bar.

Purpose of Visit by Month
This option allows you to analyse air arrivals by purpose of visit.
In the light blue box at the top of the screen, choose the country you want to analyse
arrivals data for.
Then select the Purpose of Visit type. There are two types of purpose of visit:
• UNWTO: these are the UNWTO classifications of purpose of visit, which are
o Holiday/Vacation/Leisure
o VFR (Visiting Friends and Relatives) o Business o Religion o Transit o Other
• Country: these are the purposes of visit that are used in each individual
country, and may vary from the UNWTO purposes listed above.
Note that whichever type is selected, the total tourist arrivals for any given month will
be the same. The data is merely presented in a different way. For example, if a
country collects arrivals by “Conference/Seminar”, they will be presented as
“Conference/Seminar” if Country is selected, or “Business” if UNWTO is selected.
Then select the year, also from the drop down menu. Finally, click on Go.

If UNWTO is selected, then a table similar to that below will be displayed.
If Country is selected, then the table is re-presented in a different format, using the
purposes of visit that are related to the country selected.

Add, Edit & Delete Data
To add, edit or delete arrivals data, select Add, Edit & Delete Data from the Tourist Arrivals menu.
Country of Residence by Month
Select Country of Residence by Month to enter arrivals by generating
country/region.
Firstly select the country for which the arrivals data are associated, then the source
market (country they are travelling from), and the year for which the data are
associated.
Data that has already been entered for the country and year selected are shown. To
delete or edit any data, simply change or remove the figure from the appropriate box.
To add data, type it into the appropriate box.
After making any change, click on Save in the blue box at the top.

Purpose of Visit by Month
Select Purpose of Visit by Month to enter arrivals by purpose of visit.
Firstly select the country for which the arrivals data are associated, then the year for
which the data are associated.
Data that has already been entered for the country and year selected are shown. To
delete or edit any data, simply change or remove the figure from the appropriate box.
To add data, type it into the appropriate box.
After making any change, click on Save in the blue box at the top.

CRUISE ARRIVALS
There are three options in the Cruise Arrivals module, as follows:
• Build Table & Chart
• Country of Arrival by Month and Year
• Add, Edit & Delete Data

Build Table & Chart
The Build Table & Chart option allows you to create your own table and chart in any
format you like. You can then export it, if you want to use it in documents or
presentations, or for further analysis in Excel.
On the left hand side of the screen in a light blue box in which you select the
parameters that will define the data you want in your table.
Firstly, select the country or countries you would like to analyse cruise arrivals data
for.

The table showing the data selected appears on the top right hand side of the
screen, with the corresponding chart below it. The table can be exported using the
Export button.
The type of chart can be changed, and also can be exported, just the same way as
for air arrivals.

Country of Arrival by Month and Year
This option allows you to analyse cruise arrivals by country visited.
In the light blue box at the top of the screen, choose the country you want to analyse
arrivals data for.
Then click on Go.

The table shows the number of cruise arrivals in the country selected in all the years
for which data is available.
Data can be exported using the export button, in the same way as for air arrivals.

Add, Edit & Delete Data
To add, edit or delete cruise arrivals data, select this option.
The first step is to select the country you want to enter cruise arrivals data for, and
also the year, in the light blue box at the top of the screen.
Simply enter the number of cruise arrivals in the relevant boxes, and click on Save when you are finished.

AIR AND CRUISE SURVEYS
The Air and Cruise Survey module contains the reports for all the air and cruise
surveys that the SPTO has undertaken for various countries in the South Pacific
using the Survey Toolkit.
Selecting this option
shows all the reports that
have been compiled.
Clicking on any one will
download it into your
downloads folder in PDF
format.

LIBRARY
There are two options in the Library module, as follows:
• Search the Library
• Add, Edit & Delete Data
The Library is an online database of documents and useful links to website, that can
be searched using key words and special search criteria.

Search the Library
It doesn’t matter if you are looking for documents or Internet links, you search the Library in the same way.
On the left hand side (in the light blue box), you can enter the search criteria for the
document or link you are looking for.
There are two main search criteria: Geographies and Data Topics.
If you are looking for documents or links for a specific country or region, then click on
the [+] box next to All in the Geographies box.

lists of Countries in the same way.

If you want to select all countries within a region, then click on the Search below
geographies box at the top of the screen. This will search on all geographies in the
group you select.
For example, if you select Europe on its own, the search will only before documents
that have been tagged as relating to “Europe”. If you also click on the Search below
geographies box then the search will find all documents relating to “Europe” as well
as all documents relating to countries in Europe (e.g. UK, Germany, Italy, etc).

There is a list of data topics in the box below the geographies. If you do not want to
search on any data topic, then click on Click to select all Data Topics at the top of

Finally, click on Go at the top of the light blue box to execute the search you have
defined.

The results of the search are shown in the box to the right. There are two tabs:
Documents and External Links. You can switch between the results of the search
of Documents and External Links (links to websites) by clicking on the tab.
To select a Document to read, or an Extern mply click on the blue
ink in the highlighted yellow box.

You can filter your search results further, if the list is long, by typing in data into the
boxes at the top of the columns.
Click on the pin next to the column you want to sort on, and select the appropriate
search criteria (e.g. “Begins with”, “Contains”, etc), then enter the text or numbers
you want to search on.
For example, selecting “Begins with” and typing in “forecast” would find all
documents beginning with “Forecast”.

Add, Edit & Delete Data
To add new documents or links, and edit or delete existing ones, click on the Add,
Edit & Delete Data option, then select Documents or Links.

Documents
The list of documents in the database is shown on the screen.
To add a document, click on Add on any line of the list (it doesn’t matter which one).
This allows you to enter the data that is related to the document you want to add in
the bottom half of the screen.

Enter the following information:
• Description: a short description of the document you are adding. Ideally less
than 10 words.
• Title: the official title of the document.
• Organisation: the organisation or publisher of the document.
• Author: the author of the document (or organisation if there is no specific
author).
• Publish Date: the date (year – in the format YYYY) that the document was
published.
• Pay for Download: click on this box if the user needs to pay to download this
document.
Next, you need to select the Geographies and Data Topics that the document relates
to (see Guide to Geographies and Topic Selections below).
Select the relevant Geographies by expanding the list by clicking on the [+] box. If
the document relates to all countries in the world, then click on All.
Then select the Data Topics that the document relates to.
Finally, upload the document by clicking on Choose File and selecting the file you
are uploading in

To edit a document, click on the Edit tag on the document you want to make the edit
to.
To first find the document you want to edit, enter the search criteria into the
appropriate boxes at the top of each column. You can search on any column, or any
combination of columns (i.e. more than one column). Simply entering a single word
or number creates an immediate search (see above).
Once you have clicked on Edit, the details related to the document you have
selected appear at the bottom of the screen, and you can make any changes you like
to any of the fields. End any edits by clicking on Save.
To delete a document, simply edit it first, then click in the Deleted box.
The document will no longer appear in any future searches.

Links
Adding, editing and deleting links is exactly the same as for documents. The only
difference is that instead of uploading a physical document, the URL of the link
needs to be entered.
The URL of the web link should be entered here.
Note, there is no Publish Date to enter, or the option of selecting Pay for
Download.

Guide to Geographies and Topic Selection
Geographies
Every link and document should be categorised according to at least one
geographical region. The world has been segmented into four levels; each expands
as you move through the categories as follows:

• In all cases, select as close to Level 1 as possible, for instance:
o A market research paper published by an American cruise operator
titled Growth in the Cruise Market 2012 would be tagged ‘World’.
o A link to the global organisation specialising in Sustainable Tourism
Best Practices would also be tagged ‘World’.
• When Level 1 is inappropriate, move on to Level 2, examples might include:
o Travel industry news on Tourism Trends in the South Pacific should
be tagged ‘Oceania’.
o A link to an article about Adventure Tourism Development in Asia and
the South Pacific should have two tags, ‘Asia’ and ‘Oceania’.
o European Inbound Travel Statistics should be tagged ‘Europe’.
• For documents and links which are more specific, Level 3 would be the
correct choice:
o A document about Protecting Religious Tourism Sites in the Middle
East would be tagged ‘Near & Middle East’.
o Likewise a link to Eco-tourism Best Practices in South East Asia
should be tagged ‘Southern Asia’.
o Please note: at Level 3, there is never a need to use the Regional
Area ‘Oceania & Antarctica’ as this is the only choice in the region. Level 2 or Level 4 are the main tags here.
• Level 4 is the selection for documents and links relating to specific
countrywide information such as:
o US tourism statistics – United States.
o Ecotourism in Peru – Peru.
o Niche market research in France and Germany should be tagged both
‘France’ and ‘Germany’.
There may be instances where levels should be combined, but use with caution! For
example, ‘European Commission Research into Developing Tourist Flows from
Europe to Brazil, Chile and Argentina’ should be tagged ‘Europe’ (Level 2) and
‘Brazil’, ‘Chile’ and ‘Argentina’ (all Level 4).

Topics
• Every Document and Link should be tagged with a topic (or keyword) to help
users find the most relevant document for their search.
• Be generous with tagging and linking topics. The more keywords associated
with a particular document or link, the more likely it will be that users can find
it.
• It is important to be appropriate however, or the search function becomes
unhelpful rather than useful, particularly as the number of documents and
links increase over time.

There are many instances where keywords/topics may be combined to good effect:
• Individual tourism markets (Adventure, Backpacking, Wedding and
Honeymoons etc) are all types of Niche Market.
• Culture and Heritage is a significant Niche Market and there are many
instances of Market Research, Statistics/Trends/Forecasting and Strategy
and others, which could fit alongside the topic.
• Product Development is usually conducted alongside Planning and
Development and Strategy.
• Statistics/Trends/Forecasting may be standalone, particularly in the case of
documents or links to specific statistics tables or reports. However, they can
also form part of a strategic development plan (Strategy).
• Economic Impact is often part of Strategy, Product Development and
Planning and Development, but can also be standalone.
• Finance and Funding generally refers to obtaining grants or funding for
Product Development, and may be used in conjunction with Planning and
Development and/or Strategy.
• The topic Conservation/Wildlife (also a Niche Market) is closely aligned to
Sustainable/Responsible/Ecotourism, and in some cases, Environmental.
• Inbound Tourism and Outbound Tourism can be used alongside
Statistics/Trends/Forecasting, and on occasion in alliance with Niche Markets
