128 cadets gathered at Garelochhead Army Training Campfor a weekend exercise from the 27th - 29th of April. Cadets

took part in activities such as clay target shooting, team buildingexercises, archery, sports, swimming, leadership, radiocontrolled model flying, orienteering, caving, radios andfieldcraft.

The wing clay target team smashed their previous record of 55cadets earning a Clay Pigeon Shooting association (CPSA)Clay Target Experience certificate, by putting 109 cadetsthrough the course.

Over 70 cadets and staff were treated to an air experience flightin a sea king courtesy of HMS Gannet.

Cadets and staff from 327 (Kilmarnock) Squadron, AirTraining Corps recently enjoyed a visit to GE Caledonian

in Prestwick. The Prestwick plant repairs and overhauls GEengines for a number of prestigious international airlines.

The evening started with a video presentation by StewartChristie, Training Manager, on the history of the company, thetype of engines that they repair and overhaul and an indicationof the wide range of customers that GE Caledonian work with.

The tour of the factory was conducted by Laura Robertson,Apprentice Co-ordinator. Laura gave a very interesting andinformative talk as she showed the cadets the engines beingstripped down, repaired, parts replaced and enginesreassembled.

The cadets asked plenty of questions and thoroughly enjoyedtheir visit. Many of the cadets were interested in theopportunities that GE Caledonian offer as the company recruitsincreasing numbers of apprentices each year.

As well as uniformed staff, the squadron has three

Civilian Instructors (CIs) whohave recently joined as well asthree who have beenvolunteers for over 5 yearsand who have completedthousands of hours to supportthe cadets.

CIs give up two nights a weekand many weekends to helprun the squadron and teachand support cadets to gainnew skills and develop intoconfident adults.

Longstanding Volunteers

Jim Cree is a former cadet andhelps run the administrationside of the squadron includingkeeping records of all thecadets achievements.

Husband and wife Joyce andBill Black got involved fiveyears ago when their son wasa cadet. Joyce does thesquadron PR and marketing,is the BTEC (Business andTechnology Training Council)Officer and assists with theadministration of the Duke ofEdinburgh Award within thesquadron. Bill is a qualifiedarchery coach and clay targetsafety officer and also teachescadets the Cadet entry levelHealth and Safety course.

Newest Volunteers - All 3 ofthe newest CIs are formercadets

Bill Robertson‘s son was acadet and he takes themodelling class which hasalready won some competitionprizes. He also teaches theCadet entry level Health andSafety course.

Matt Dorran’s son is a cadetand he is researching thehistory of the Squadron and istrying to start remote controlflying in the Squadron.

Michael Docherty has almostcompleted his BasicExpedition Leader Award andholds the Sports LeaderAwards. He will be leading awide a range of activitiesincluding sports andadventure training. Michael isalso the Squadron Duke ofEdinburgh Award co-ordinator.

All of the CIs agree that themost rewarding part for themis to watch cadets from age 13as they learn new skills, makelifelong friendships and try a

wide variety of new activities, developing into young menand women full of confidence. Many former cadets are still intouch with the Squadron andpop in to let us know what ishappening in their lives.

Fortunately the weather stayedfine to make it an enjoyableweekend but sadly Scotlandlost (7-10) in the semi-final ofthe Bowl competition to Spain, after being knocked out of themain competition on theSaturday, but the efforts of thegroup made sure that therewas plenty of noise beingmade by the fans to help spurthem along. The maincompetition was eventuallywon by New Zealand who beatEngland in the final 29-14

Both Squadron Commanders,Flt Lt Mel Fairley (2535 Sqn)

and Flt Lt Colin Wardle (62Sqn) commented on howpleased they were to havebeen asked to help out and thecadets were unanimous intheir feedback on how muchthey enjoyed being part of itall…..especially the fun and“banter” that was emanatingfrom the “Party Stand” (wherethe supporters in fancy dresswere).

A colourful, musical andgenerally noisy event wasgreatly enjoyed by all who tookpart. (Duns) and 2180(Galashiels)Squadrons bravedthe "interesting"early summerweather to makethe long 200+ mileround trip, to RAFLeuchars for a visit to 12 AEF and flights in the Tutor. A snapsnow fall just south of Kinross almost disrupted the journey asthe minibus approached a 7 vehicle smash in about 3 inchesof snow on the southbound carriageway of the M90. With thenorthbound carriageway clear but incredibly slippy the grouparrived at RAF Leuchars to blue skies!

Then with lunch for some and the pre flight briefing andemergency drills successfully completed it was into flying kitfor six first time flyers and out into the wild blue yonder . In alltwelve cadets flew with them group departing south just after5pm and the customary post flight meal so traditional amongAir Cadets - a Big Mac , Fries and Coke at the nearest McD!

Recently Corporal Murray Bullions and Sergeant GriegForsyth from 2519 (Strathmore) Squadron were presented
