An International Seminar on Passenger Activities and High Speed Rail Traffic, was heldwith the cooperation of the International Union of Railways (UIC) and the Railways of theIslamic Republic of Iran (RAI) at the end of August, 2014 in Tehran. The Seminar was wellreceived by the managers and specialists in rail transport and hosted top instructors andspeakers from UIC and different European countries and companies:

Development of railway Projects

• Up to 2013, the operating length of railways is around 10,000 km.and the operating length of railway network is more than 10,000 kmwhich is used as passenger & cargo railway.• By 2020, it is estimated that railway network will be over 15,000 km,with the electrified rate over 20% and rate of double lines over 20%.

Measures to Address Financial Needs• By the end of 2014, construction of about 4,800 km new railway has been

approved by the Iranian government with an investment of 5 billion Euros. It is

hoped that the construction of 5,000 km more new railways will be approved in

2015 and 2016.

• Up to 2013, the investment of railways construction is about 15 billion Euros.

About 300 kilometers newly built railways have been put into operation along

with 1,000 kilometers newly doubled railway lines.

• Up to 2013, the investment in Iranian highways/freeways and

infrastructures is about 16 billion Euros.

• 8,800 km of highways/freeways have been newly built which

700 kilometers of them are freeways.

• In 2014, the government will speed up the construction of

missing links of inter province freeways, capacity enlarged

intercity highway, rural highway, and the reconstruction of

transport infrastructure. The required estimated investment will

reach to about 11 billion Euros.

Fleet development and technical traction increase

A contract for supplying 150 passenger locomotives has been concluded

: 30 units of them, made in Germany have entered the rail fleet 

:12 units are made by transferring technology in Iran 

:The remaining are being manufactured in Iran.

Designing and construction of 35 domestic diesel engines have started

Additionally, construction and renovation of GM and GE locomotive 

parts, Alstom and Hitachi locomotive parts are among the railway 

activities in fleet sector

Signaling SystemAt present time: more than 4000 kilometer of rail lines are being equipped with block system

the signaling systems are being upgraded 2000 kilometers of which will be officially put into operation soon.

Equipping and Investment in Sarakhs Station

‐ Station Area: 3101800 m²

‐ construction of 73 km of rail lines (54 normal+19 wide)

‐bogie‐changing capacity : 200 bogies per day‐ increased. 

‐ bogie maintenance capacity: increased from 2000 to 6000 bogies

‐ Constructing the second bogie‐changing site in Sarakhs to increase wagon exchange 

to 400 wagons per day
