Standard Form to Create Regional Plant List Use this Form to create, edit and vet the list About 63 Recommended Plants for This Region Region: INSTRUCTIONS Purpose and use of this plant list: This list will become the 63 native species recommended in an FNPS regional brochure for the general public for landscape planting in residential and commercially developed areas. Promoting native landscaping: 1) helps wild plants, wildlife, and ecosystems survive in and near developed areas, 2) promotes sustainable landscape practices that help protect the environment, and 3) furthers the education and enjoyment of the public. THIS REGIONAL LIST SHOULD BE THE “STARS” OF THIS REGION, distinguishing its unique plant signatures from the other five regions of the state. That is to say, choose those plants that are at their best in this region, even if their native range is wide. Also choose endemic species or those that are characteristic within the region. Considerations of availability and capacity to thrive within a broad range of substrate types must be made in choosing plants to recommend to the public, but should not so dominate the recommendations that this list lacks its “REGIONAL STARS”. To a small degree, this list may influence the availability of species in local nurseries and, therefore, should not omit all wonderful native landscape plants that are now hard to find. The FNPS recommended species for the region will be different from lists of other organizations. Tip: You do not need to do this yourself, or alone. Find people in your region who can do this. It may be easiest for two people to pull this together, or maybe you want a workgroup in your region to do it in a work meeting. Afterward, send your proposed list to all the other Chapters in your region for their input. Have a lunch or a workshop and above all, make pulling this list together an opportunity and fun. Decide who in your region needs to vet the list: most knowledgeable folks, nurseries, botanists, landscapers, gardeners, or someone who just knows this kind of thing. All region lists will be vetted by people in FNPS and sent to other landscape experts, so don’t worry it, and keep a list of alternative plants if some choices are eliminated by FNPS for conservation or other reasons. 1. Create A List Of 63 Species For The Region Species need to be selected for all 9 light-moisture zone categories defined in the brochure, for example: sunny-dry or shady-wet. List each species only once in the light- moisture zone it most prefers. Put each species only in the zone ideally suited to it. If it is widely tolerant of other light or moisture conditions, make a bullet point that says in which other zone(s) it also thrives. If you have trouble finding shady zone plants, consult Craig Huegel’s recent publication, “Native Florida Plants for Shady Landscapes” or other sources. List manger: Revision Date

Choose 9 sun, 6 part sun, and 6 shade species for each of the 3 moisture zones (9 light-moisture zones in all). Keeping a second page of alternates for each light-moisture zone will help if species are rejected during the discussion and the vetting process. a. Start with FNPS database (http://fnps.org/plants). You can select for species in each of the 9 light-moisture zones in your counties. b. Confirm the species range with Florida Atlas of Vascular Plants (http://www.florida.plantatlas.usf.edu) c. Use a lot of common sense d. Later confirm availability from a local or regional nursery or nurseries (not required for EVERY species, including a few hard-to-find species is OK) e. A landscape expert from the region can help vet your list for the final best selection of species f. Later vetting may eliminate recommending species that endanger local species, or that are easily confused with big box cultivars, or for other reasons. 2. Create The Bullets For Every Species Bullets under the species should be simple, and clear, and interesting to the public a. Maximum ~19 characters per line

Note: Use space on each line (“inland shrub” is better, if true, than “inland” or “shrub” on two separate lines)

b. Maximum 7 bullet lines per species (use them, don’t waste them) c. Required: Plant height at typical mature height (not the maximum, not a range, round to nearest in feet), include breadth on same line only if broader than tall or unusual or typically spreading. Use maximum height for trees and large shrubs. d. Required: Outstanding landscape asset or landscaping descriptor (e.g., “Fine clumping grass”) Why plant it? e. Required: Seasonality (e.g., “self-seeding annual) or any other most important landscape characteristic (any negatives, expressed in positive terms, to realistically adjust expectations, required maintenance, or essential action, such as a year of initial irrigation ("water often 1st year") d. Wildlife note (required, if relevant): Butterfly nectar or host, seed for birds (make these varied and interesting) e. Range or moisture tolerance note (required, if atypical): Coastal, salt tolerate, or inland, only when its range is restricted, or moisture or shade if its tolerance is unusually hearty to a wider range outside the category zone, (e.g., “thrives moist to dry”) f. Use the space, all seven lines if there is any atypical or interesting fact, including history, plant name, edible, poisonous, poisonous to pets, endemic, rare, unusual in landscaping, etc. (humor and playfulness have a place) g. Use two lines for one note rarely, if you just can’t say it so succinctly
