Letter from the Director Happy Holidays to all of you!

As the year comes to a close, we are busier

than ever preparing for the 2015 season.

We are finalizing some minor changes to the

Region 12 show schedule and making plans

for some new and entertaining activities.

Our judges this year for Reeves arena will be

Terry Holmes, Bruce Bates and Susan Witte,

all three immensely qualified to judge our

show. We are applying for a concurrent

show in Region 7 (Scottsdale) held in March,

qualifying exhibitors for Region 12. Since

both Holmes and Witte are judging halter at

national events, we are very hopeful we can

attract more halter exhibitors. If this be-

comes an annual practice, we may be able to truly build our halter division. (This could also help

the Spotlight Futurity participation.) At this time we have also hired our Hunter/Jumper judge,

Gardner Powell, and one Dressage judge, Sandy Osborn. Matt Kwapich, our show manager, is

securing all personnel at this time and it will be reported to you once completed.

Earlier this summer, I instituted a Show Managers’ Task Force, charged with the goal of finding ways

to improve the participation of our local shows. I commend the Region 12 show managers! Each

and every one of them agreed to participate and Nan Harley agreed to chair their efforts. It is

agreed, we must find ways to get new people in our sport and this grass roots initiative may help

find solutions.

Based on the assertion that we all want to find new ways to generate interest in Arabian horses, I

am making a proposal. Rather than going to the well time and time again to seek ads from our

many generous and dedicated breeding farms and businesses in Region 12 to support several pub-

lications (i.e., the Show Program, the Spotlight circular and the Directory), ads in which we basically

advertise to each other, I suggest a different approach. Let’s consider a marketing publication, de-

signed for the non-Arabian horse owner, in which those ads reach out to new people, in new places

throughout the region. I am committed to the digital world, but such a publication may be a good

outreach in our local communities. (The Marketing, Development and Promotions committee of AHA

has produced a prototype for us to customize for our own use. It is attached for your consideration.)

To this end, I propose that we cease printing a Show Program (it is usually out of date by the time it

is printed anyway, given the number of post entries we have) and that we take the Directory online.

If the directory is online, most of us will have it with us at all times, on our phones or iPads. For those

God's Horses is a Christian based equine facility where we strive to create an environment in

which one can not only learn how to master the art of riding, but learn about God and how to

form a bond with these horses based on mutual trust and respect.

God’s Horses is a family owned business. Kim Jackson and her husband had been prayed about

opening this facility for years. They felt led to offer others the opportunity to benefit from a

friendship with horses. God opened doors they never thought He would to create this site. That is

how they knew He intends to use it for His good.

God’s Horses is located on a 25 acre farm in Mullins,

SC with a five stall barn built in 2011 equipped with a

bathroom, tack room, feed room and office. There is a 150

x 200 ft outdoor riding arena and a smaller riding ring

that is 60 ft wide for beginners and training.

The training offered consists of general riding lessons as

well as education about the care of a horse, the tack in-

volved, and how to promote a safe interaction with the

horse. Each of their trainers has over 25 years of experi-

ence riding. They also offer small group educational op-

portunities with limited riding instruction depending on the

number of participants.

At this time, God's Horses does not schedule trail rides. It may considered in the future as our business expands.

God’s Horses sponsors group outings for church groups, foster

care organizations (including the Connie Maxwell Children’s

Home in Florence and Chesterfield) and cancer support

groups, through their Galloping Faith Ministry. Please see

website for more information.

Another aspect of God's Horses is their Arabian horse breed-

ing program. In 2012, their first colt was born, Star. In the

near future, they hope to offer an educational experience

that incorporates the Arabian horse's ancient history as a

companion to their owners and interaction with this intelligent

and beautiful breed.

“Already Sparkling as The Equine Event of the Season”

Mark Miller wrote a new chapter of Arabian horse history when he rolled out the red carpet at Al-Marah Arabians LLC, on

Sunday, December 14, 2014, to welcome the broodmare elite of its world-famous herd, to the farm’s new Clermont, Florida, lake-

front headquarters. Privately owned by only three families in 200 years, the Al-Marah herd is directly descended from the Bedouin

horses first gathered in the Arabian desert by Abbas Pasha in 1815. It is the oldest, continuously bred, privately-owned band of Ara-

bian horses in the world.

The day-long Homecoming Celebration, hosted by Miller, included a line-up of nonstop activities and entertainment starting

at 11:00 am befitting the once-in-a-lifetime event. The herd made music in multi-disciplinary riding exhibitions featuring Al-Marah

winners of more than 40 National Championships in 2013 and 2014. A memorable liberty act performance showcased the horse-

human bond as the trainer directed the horse like a conductor leading an orchestra. The event included a catered barbecue, barn

tours (with “deck the stalls” decorations), plus an invigorating educational clinic to a select sale of Al-Marah Arabian horses.

The 2:00 pm arrival of the Homecoming stars themselves, spotlighted 14 glistening broodmares arriving from Tucson, as they

stepped from a convoy of transport vans to make their debut into the Sunshine state. Mark’s hand-picked “best of the best,” Al-

Marah’s broodmare crown jewels, include some with the added honor of carrying the forthcoming first Al-Marah Clermont foal crop

due in 2015. (About 90 days after their arrival in Florida according to Miller).

We still know how to put on a show,” says Miller, whose Arabian Nights Dinner Attraction wrapped its 25-year Orlando run

last year on Dec. 31, 2013. This year, the son of Al-Marah’s founder, the late Bazy Tankersley, welcomed local dignitaries to horse

enthusiasts from around the world to the picturesque 78-acre farm in Clermont for a Homecoming that’s already being considered as

the equine event of the Season.

Al-Marah Arabian Horses LLC is located at 11105 Autumn Lane in Clermont, Florida. Its world-renowned Arabian breeding

operation and stable of show horses is dedicated to producing beautiful athletes with endurance, agility, the “heart of a warrior,”

and trademark Al-Marah dispositions--safe, affectionate, and willing horses, bred to be friends and companions. Located in central

Florida, Al-Marah Clermont is an hour’s drive from Orlando International Airport, gateway to one of the world’s top tourism dest ina-

tions and now, to this historic Arabian horse breeder. Visit: www.al-marah.com.

The Red Barn began in 2010 as a sister organization of Spirit of Hope Youth

Ranch. Spirit of Hope was founded in 2006 and inspired by Crystal Peaks

Youth Ranch in Bend, Oregon. From 2007-2010 Spirit of Hope served at–risk

and disadvantage youth by allowing them to work with rescue horses while

The Red Barn helped to see individuals that could not be served at Spirit of

Hope’s Wilsonville location and began to serve those with physical, cognitive,

and emotional disabilities.

By 2011, The Red Barn had grown so much that Cornerstone Ranch offered

the use of the white barn and indoor arena for program use. The Red Barn

became a separate registered 501(c)(3) organization in February 2012 and

in June 2012 officially merged with Spirit of Hope Youth Ranch.

The Red Barn would not have been created with-

out the mentorship of Anita Cowart, whose influ-

ence continues on with every passing year. To

learn more about The Red Barn, visit their website

www.theredbarn.org.

The mission of The Red Barn is to promote and

provide equine assisted activities using rescue

horses, when possible, to individuals of all abilities

and circumstances, especially children.

The Historic Alabama Theatre recently had a screening for the documentary “the

Red Barn: A Legacy of Love”. This event was free to thh public.

Created and produced by SuttonPlace Productions, “The Red Barn: A Legacy of

Love” is a feature length documentary which tells the story of the barn from begin-

ning of a prayer made over 40 years ago tot eh programs offered today.

Region 12 Spotlight Stallion wins 2014 AHDF Pro-Am at

US Nationals!

There was electricity in the air on Wednesday night in Tulsa,

Oklahoma at the 2014 Arabian and Half-Arabian National

Championship show. 19 teams consisting of one western

horse, one trainer and one amateur were shuffled so that the

amateur was riding a different horse than originally en-

tered. The teams were then auctioned off to the crowd with

some teams going as high as $30,000! The bidder on the

winning team would receive a 7 night stay at a villa in Italy

complements of Marikate Mathews. The amateurs then had

30 minutes to spend with the trainer and horse before enter-

ing the ring for the first half of a western pleasure class be-

fore 3 judges. The trainers took over on the reverse direction

culminating in a ride off between 3 of the horses. Emerging

victorious was Possesion PGA and Rob Bick. The talented

amateur rider was Audrey Hart. All in all, $200,000 was

raised specifically for Alexa Nichols by the Arabian Horseman's Distress Fund. Possesion PGA is owned and shown by Nan Harley of

Dreym Bay Farm. In addition to this win, Possesion also garnered a Top Ten in the Western Pleasure AAOTR 36-54. Possesion PGA is

proudly in the Region 12 Spotlight Futurity as well as a Scottsdale Signature Stallion for 2015. Contact [email protected] for

breeding information. Possesion stands at RBC Show Horses, LLC.
