eagerly of their ability with the bow and how much they desired the Chief’s beautiful daughters.
Coyote turned to Raven and said, ‘I will win this contest. Just watch.’Back in the bark lodge Dirty Boy said to his grandmother, ‘Cut me a branch
and string me a bow.’ And she cut a branch of red willow bush and strung it with old string. And the boy said, ‘Make me some arrows.’ And she cut twigs for arrows but she did not feather them.
on the day of the great feast everyone in the camp collected to witness the test of strength and skill. All the young men in the camp were there, flexing their muscles and doing a bit of air-bow pulling in readiness.
‘I’m going first,’ said Coyote. He took aim at the eagle and shot twice but both of his arrows fell short. The crowd began to laugh. ‘I need more shots,’ he cried, pulling out a quiver full of arrows, but the people jumped on him and took his arrows away. ‘You are only allowed two shots,’ they told him.
All morning the young men tried to hit the eagle and all morning they failed. Then Dirty Boy said to his grandmother, ‘open the door Grandmother, so that I can see the tree with the eagle on it.’ She opened the bark door, and Dirty Boy sat up in bed, drew back his bow and loosed his arrows. The first one shredded the eagle’s tail feathers. The second killed the bird stone dead.
no one had seen Dirty Boy shoot the arrows. The crowd cheered as the bird fell, and looked around to see who had made the shot. There was a silence and then Raven stuck his big nose in. ‘I shot the bird from the lodge door!’ he shouted. He ran to pick up the eagle and was surprised to find the old woman there before him.
‘This belongs to us,’ she said, and she carried the dead eagle to the Chief and claimed his daughters for her grandson. But the crowd took one look at Dirty Boy and began to laugh.
‘The Chief cannot give his daughters to this scabby-faced, lousy boy. He is sick with sore eyes and a running nose. His hair needs cutting and his scalp cleaning. Look at his clothes. They are disgusting!’
So the Chief designed another contest.‘Tomorrow,’ he said, ‘everyone will go up into the mountains and set two traps.
Whoever catches two otters, one dark and one light, will win my daughters in marriage.’ He said this knowing that Dirty Boy was bedridden and could not walk. ‘This will be the final test. I am the Chief. I cannot go back on my word.’ Again shouts of excitement greeted the announcement and the contestants headed for

the mountains.Coyote turned to Raven and said, ‘I will win this contest. Just watch.’Back in the bark lodge Dirty Boy said to his grandmother, ‘Make two traps for
me.’ And she made two thin traps from willow sticks. And the boy said, ‘Set them one either side of the lodge door.’ And she did as he asked.
once in the mountains Coyote set his traps, but he caught nothing. ‘I need more traps,’ he cried, pulling out ten more. ‘Whoever heard of setting only two traps?’ All day and all night he sat by his traps but the next morning they were as empty as before. It was the same story with all the other young men. not a single otter had been caught. It was a very sad and tired collection of folk who made their way down the mountain and gathered outside the Chief’s lodge.
‘Who claims the prize?’ demanded the Chief. no one spoke. ‘Have you come back empty-handed?’ he asked. At that, the grandmother came forward with two handsome otters in her hands,
one dark and one light, and claimed his daughters for her grandson. What was the Chief to do? He had given his word. So, sadly, he handed over
his two beautiful daughters to the old crone. ‘Go with her,’ he said, ‘and she will take you to your husband.’
As they made their way through the camp they passed Raven’s lodge. They could hear cackling and laughter coming from inside the house.
‘I must go in and see what Raven is laughing about,’ said the older of the two girls.
‘no. We were told to follow the old lady,’ said the younger sister. But the older girl went inside Raven’s house and did not come out again. She
became Raven’s wife. now Raven had a big nose. He also had a big head. He was not what anyone would call handsome, and he was not about to change.
The younger girl went into Dirty Boy’s hut. She helped clean and tidy the place and she tended her sick husband with care and devotion.
And everything changed. The old bark hut turned into a fine skin lodge, richly decorated with handsome
carvings. The poles were made from the best hardwoods in the forest. Painted streamers tied to the roof fluttered in the summer breeze.
The lodge stood by itself on the edge of the camp beside a clump of trees. Coyote stared at it, open-mouthed.
‘It wasn’t there last night,’ he muttered.

‘Have you heard?’ said Coyote.‘Heard what?’ said Raven.‘We have a visitor.’Coyote and Raven were walking along the riverbank.
It was early in the morning and a mist still hung in the valley. The air smelt sharp and fresh. The two friends were on their way to the Chief’s lodge, a handsome building in the centre of the camp decorated with rich and beautiful carvings. everyone was going to be there, and the paths were full of people walking. There was a sense of excitement, for the Chief was going to make an important announcement.
‘What visitor?’ asked Raven. Coyote said nothing. He nodded towards an old lodge standing by itself on the
edge of the camp beside a clump of trees.

This is a North
American Indian myth
from the Okanagon
tribe who live on the
Washington - British
Columbia border (see
map). What is the
difference between a
myth, a legend, a folk
tale and a fable?
‘It wasn’t there last night,’ he said. The lodge looked shabby. The poles were old and roughly cut from wood that
was already splintered. The roof was a spread of torn and tattered matting. The walls were made from sheets of tree bark roughly cut and hastily tied together.
As Coyote and Raven watched, an old woman came out of the hut. She was dressed in a threadbare poncho that hung off her like an old blanket. She wore a faded cloth over her head, covering a matt of grey hair. She was slightly bent over, and was carrying a kettle. She shuffled off down to the river.
Coyote and Raven peered inside the hut. There was no furniture there, just a scattering of dried rushes from the river. There were some battered pots standing beside a makeshift fireplace in the middle of the room. A bed in one corner was made from a heap of old clothes piled up on the floor.
A figure lay on the bed.‘Hello,’ said Coyote.A dirty, sore-eyed boy levered himself up onto one elbow. His hair hung lank
about his face and Coyote could see the lice moving across his scalp. He was dressed in a single loose gown shredded with holes.
‘Hello,’ said the boy, with a lazy smile. There was a rather nasty smell coming from the hut, and Raven had to go
outside and hold a handkerchief up to his nose. Raven had a big nose, indeed Raven had a big head. He was not what anyone would call handsome.
‘Welcome to our camp,’ said Coyote, and he also left the lodge in a hurry. ‘What a dirty boy,’ he muttered.
As they went on their way they passed the old crone coming back from the river with her kettle of water. They nodded to her, and she gave them a toothless smile.
The day was warming up, and a large crowd had collected outside the Chief’s lodge. As the headman emerged, the crowd fell silent.
‘You all know,’ said the Chief, ‘that I have two daughters.’There was a murmuring among the men and women, for it was well known
that the Chief’s daughters were the two most beautiful girls in the camp.‘Many men have offered themselves in marriage, but my daughters have refused
them all. It is now my duty to find a good husband for them. In a week’s time I will hold a great feast and the main event will be a shooting contest. everyone will be allowed to have two shots at an eagle that will perch in the tall tree. Whoever kills the eagle will take my daughters in marriage.’
The murmurings burst into excited chatter, and all the young men boasted

tuesday, november 10thI watched Four Corners on the ABC last night. Guess what, they don’t have ads! The
program was about the War in Iraq. I sat glued to the set, trying to imagine Dirty Boy
living in those places. It’s hot and dusty out there, and there’s men firing guns into the
air and shells of burnt-out cars sitting by the roadside. There was a pic of a body lying in
a gutter, quite dead. Dirty Boy’s Dad is dead. Omigod. Little children play in the dirt or
smile shyly at the cameras as columns of tanks rumble through the streets. Young women
wear cloths over their heads and peer out of doorways, and old men smoke pipes and play
dominoes outside the bombed-out cafes.
It’s another world out there.
Dirty Boy was sitting under a tree, watching a group of kids kicking a ball around so
I went over and dropped down beside him. ‘Iraq has a good soccer team,’ he told me. ‘In
the past, if you didn’t play well you got shot.’
‘That’s sport today,’ I said.
He grinned.
‘Tell me about Iraq,’ I said. ‘What was it like there?’
Dirty Boy turned towards me. Have I mentioned his eyes? They are a deep brown. I’ve
never seen eyes so liquid. I felt I could drown in them.
‘I can spell xenophobic,’ I told him.
He smiled his bright smile.
‘I think we are going to be friends,’ he said.
‘So,’ I said. ‘Perhaps you should start by telling me your name.’

1 What sort of a person is Charlene? Go into detail when discussing her character and provide evidence from the story to support your conclusions.
2 What has Kat learnt about boys during the course of these diary entries? How has she learnt these things? There are two questions here.
3 As Kat writes her diary over the spring months there is a noticeable change in her writing style. How does her style change over this period? Note as many technical alterations as you can.
imAginAtive extension
1 Write your own amusing satirical versions of one of the following, adding illustrations where necessary:• an ad for aftershave or lipstick • a section of the article entitled ‘Meet the Psychic’• Jessie Aged Fifteen’s war poem.
2 Write three diary entries of your own imagining, each one written at a different point in a person’s life. The entries are to be made when the author is 7, 14 and 21 years old respectively. The changes in growth should be reflected in the writing techniques as well as the subject matter. Aim to find some common topic or theme to run through the three entries.
going further
The story of Dirty Boy is a common one in fairytale and legend. Basically it is the
Cinderella story, the tale of a person who has neither power nor looks until someone
comes along who can see into the human heart. These stories are about the gap
between the mask that is shown to the world and the person within. Take this theme and work it into a story of your own in any form you choose: poem, short story, cut-and-paste collage, illustrated wall chart, comic strip, a series of newspaper articles, notes passed in class, or a short dramatic performance.

Monday, august 24thCharlene tells me she’s going to Alaska to save the whales. She tells me this in Year
10 Maths, like she’s texting me. I swear Charlene is into something new every day. I
ask her when she’s going to do this whaling thing, seeing as how she still has to write
her first novel, form a girl band and develop her own range of lingerie. That’s when Mr
Allbot confiscates my phone. Mr Allbot is an Aries, size 22, and his colours are Grey and
Burgundy. He’s the sort of man who drinks chardonnay and pinches young teachers’ bums
at the End Of Year Social. He could of just told me to put the phone away, but oh no, he
has to have a perv. So your going to save the whales? he goes to Charlene, and she goes,
I so am. I’m saving them from the Japs. I’m 15, I’ve got 42,027 signatures on 3 petitions

really Aquarian. I notice Todd grinning at us across the room. Todd’s a total hunk. I try
to grin back. I guess I must of looked a bit embarrassed, like Glenn Close in that episode
where she’s accused of boiling those puppies. Nick gives me a cheerful nudge. Nick knows
what’s going on. I nudge him back but Todd sees it and winks at me which sends shivers
up my spine! Oooo-errr! On my way home I see Dirty Boy. Hey, Dirty Boy! I shout. He

Resident Evil Three? How good is that? He stands real close to me and I can smell his

Woweee! We’re all set for saturday night. I must ask Charlene whether she recommends

Friday, august 28thI hate Dirty Boy, he just stands there watching the kids kicking soccer balls around.
Then he sits on a bench and eats his lunch. He’s got funny stuff in there, funny rolled-up

our school was on the telly last night, nothing academic, just seven thousand bats have
taken residence in our mango trees. The ground staff’s tried getting rid of them with nets
and hoses but no good, so they played a Barry Manilow CD at full vol and the bats have
all flown off to the botanic gardens, good result eh? Today’s a real spring day, the wattle’s

Intellectual property laws now impact on our daily lives in much more obvious ways than in the past and affect how we access or engage with technology, medicine, nature, education and entertainment. This text uses broader social and economic contexts to locate the black-letter law in the everyday, making it an accessible introduction to IP that will equip students with a foundation of legal knowledge for either entry-level legal practice or to progress into more specialised postgraduate study of IP law.
In relation to the key areas—copyright, design, patents, confidential information, passing off and trade marks —the book provides:
• A policy overview of the legal category, its history and emerging trends
• An explanation of the structure of the legislation and associated rights
• Leading case extracts to elucidate key legal principles and tensions.
key features• With a primary focus on Australian law, this text also has an awareness of comparative law, especially
UK, EU and US law.
• A unique casebook methodology and approach to the selection of cases that covers the basics, while keeping current policy challenges and international perspectives at the fore.
new to this edition• New chapter—‘Criteria for Subsistence of Copyright’
• Extensive discussion of the impact of the Intellectual Property Laws Amendment (Raising the Bar) Act 2012 (Cth), including comparative reference to EU and US case law
• Discussion of key policy proposals, including the Australian Law Reform Commission’s Report No 122, Copyright and the Digital Economy (2013) and the Advisory Council on Intellectual Property’s Review of the Designs System: Options Paper (2014)
• New cases and extracts including National Rugby League Investments v Singtel Optus (2012); Roadshow Films v iiNet (2012); Seafolly v Fewstone (2014); Research Affiliates v Commissioner of Patents (2014); D’Arcy v Myriad Genetics (2014); DC Comics v Cheqout (2013); Cantarella Bros v Modena Trading (2014) and many more.
