Brady Rymer Assembly PTO Book Fair
Dental Health Awaremess
T he annual PTO Book Fair took place the week of January 22nd. As always, the fair was a big hit with our students! Teachers brought the students down to browse the Scholastic book racks and choose books that they were interested in. We saw many smiling faces leaving the library on those days!
On March 6th, Brady Rymer and The Little Band that Could visited Mount Sinai Elementary. Each grade chose a song to practice the week prior to his visit, and it showed when they danced and sang along in our cafetori-um! It was a fun day for our students!
Jasmine Stana, Erik Bobrowsky, Matthew Rossman and Kathryn Hoehl. Bryce Pancir, Anna Mueller, Liam Kelly
and Isabella Ranirez.
Dr. Reinecker, a local dentist and Mount Sinai parent, visited us again this year to teach our students about dental health. Each student not only learned about dental health but left with a free bag of dental supplies. Thank you Dr. Reinecker!

Craft for Critters
C rafts for Critters is an educational high school student run, specifically our schools Ocean Bowl team, lesson for elementary age students. In each lesson, stu-dents learn basic information about marine pollution and possible solutions they can take themselves. We focus on the solution of repurposing as we make a marine critter out of a recyclable item. In our first lesson, in Mr. Walsh’s class, we made a can octopus. We demonstrated how helping the worlds ocean environment can be fun and enjoyable when incorporated in everyday life. Additionally, doing a craft usually done around Earth day at another time during the year, emphasizes the idea that “Earth Day is everyday”. They were also asked what pledges they will make to help, and there was a range of answers from re-cycling more to organizing a beach cleanup! The children seemed to entirely enjoy the craft and learning from the “big kids” and will hopefully share the lessons they learned with friends and family.
Happy Spring 2018!!!

FOA Snowman Contest
F irst grade students participated in the Annual FOA Snowman decorating contest in February. The winners received a certificate of recognition and appreciation in school as well as names announced in school over the public address system. The winners for each class are pictured above: Front row: Amanda Novellino, Samantha Hoehl, Evangeline Carmody, Vanessa Teriaco, Chloe Merz, Olivia Albertina, Gabriella Tarduno. Back row: Bryce Pancir, Jacob Marcus, Cole Xerri, Luke Cataldo, Anthony Pignatello and Colton Merz.
Mustang Postal is a way for students to practice the lost art of letter or note card writing between students and staff in the Elementary School. Students can send cards or letters to former teachers or friends and siblings in an-other class or grade level. Second grade volunteers get to learn what is means to be the “postmaster” by stamp-ing and delivering the letters during their recess period which helps them put their community curriculum into practice. Pictured here are postal workers from Mrs. Wilcken’s class.
Colleen Abby, known as Mrs. Abby to the kids, turned 60 this month! To honor her milestone birthday, Mrs. Poe-rio's class dressed in clothes from the 1950's and 1960's. The students brainstormed reasons why Mrs. Abby is special, wrote them on paper, typed them in Pixie and created pictures and backgrounds, and then presented them to her in a PowerPoint presentation. Each student individually read their slide and gave Mrs. Abby a big birthday hug!
Officer Lynaugh finished his Police Smart sessions by talking to our Kindergarten students on Monday, January 22nd. He talked to our Kindergarten students about how to interact with strangers and staying safe in the home.

6th Grade Orchestra visits Lincoln Center Field Trip
O n January 31st, 2018, the 6th grade Orchestra attended a school day concert given by the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center in New York City. This is the fifth year that the 6th
grade Orchestra participated in the concert, which in-cludes live performances of classical works, narration, historical connections, compositions by young compos-ers, and even audience participation. In previous years, our students have learned about Benjamin Britten during the time of World War II, Felix Mendelssohn and his mu-sic for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Jean Sibelius and his impact on Finland’s nationalism, and Dvorak’s New World Symphony. This year’s 6th grade learned about Duke Ellington and the other famous people and move-ments associated with the Harlem Renaissance. To pre-pare for the concert, the students have completed read-ings and worksheets, written and performed blues poems, and even learned two famous Duke Ellington pieces: C-Jam Blues, and It Don’t Mean a Thing, which they per-formed at this year’s Strings Festival concert. Many thanks to the Friends of the Arts, for helping with the cost of this amazing experience for our students.
For the third consecutive year, Zekey Huang made it all the way to the Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee Contest held at Hofstra University. It was a battle for first place, as Zekey made it to the finals, finishing as the first runner up. He is already back at it again, preparing for next year’s spelling bee contest. Congratulations, Ze-key!

A s part of our ongoing mission to promote kindness, unity, and good decision-making, Peer Support host-
ed our eleventh annual Awareness Night at Mt. Sinai Mid-dle School on January 26, 2018. The intent of Awareness Night is to sensitize our seventh and eighth grade stu-dents to pertinent social issues such as bullying, self-confidence, friendship, self-image and the importance of making good decisions. In addition, Awareness Night is designed to break down walls and build bridges between students of divergent ethnic and social groups. Students were given the opportunity to process presenta-tions and debrief in smaller supervised Family Groups. This year’s guest speakers were Rohan Murphy and Shadrack Boakye. Each speaker delivered inspirational messages that our students could relate to. In addition, a snack and dinner were provided for all of the participants. A special thanks to the P.T.O. for all of their contributions and support to make this night such a success. The even-ing began immediately after school and concluded at 10:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, February 27, the Mount Sinai High School Guidance Department held a College and Career Workshop for eleventh grade students and their parents. The groups met in four classrooms according to their as-signed counselors. This was the first of two evening presentations, the other takes place in September of the students’ senior year. On this night, counselors discussed the following agenda items: starting the college search, trying to find colleges that match what the student is looking for, using Navi-ance, and standardized tests (SAT/SAT II/ACT exams). Counselors used smartboards to “walk” those in attend-ance through Naviance, highlighting several features of the program that will assist our students during this pro-cess.

P rior to the winter recess, Interact Club members, along with our Elementary School students, col-lected items to donate to Save-A-Pet Animal Shelter. Items ranged from cat/dog food, treats,
leashes, collars, cat litter, cat/dog beds, and toys. The students were more than happy with the incredible re-sponse of the community. We were able to fill over ten large boxes with donated items and bring them to the ani-mals at the shelter We are currently beginning to work on our annual “Pennies for Patients” campaign. It is an annual fundrais-er for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to promote research and awareness. Each student will have a dona-tion kit to raise money for this worthy cause. Checks can be made payable to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Socie-ty. The Interact Club will also be accepting used or new backpacks that will be donated to children in Haiti. Every year, students bring in their used or new backpacks. The backpacks are then sent to an orphanage in Haiti and used by the students there. In the past, we have collect-ed more than fifty backpacks. Please donate any back-pack to Ms. Falco in the High School Guidance office by May 18, 2018. The Mount Sinai High School Interact Club meets every other Monday in the high school library after school. The purpose of this club is to provide community support and volunteer efforts to the local and international communi-ties. New members are always welcome. Members of the Mount Sinai Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) continue to provide lessons to the elementary grade levels. On Thursday, January 25, they provid-ed a lesson on community service to students in second grade. Students were reminded that the Elementary
School has a Character Education program that focuses on the importance of Random Acts of Kindness. The children were asked to share how they help at home and at school. Next, our students read the story The Giving Tree, and the elementary students concluded by making their own Giving Tree. On Thursday, March 1, FBLA members provided a lesson to students in the third grade on the importance of following rules at home, school and work. The children then participated in a debate focusing on the conse-quence of not doing homework and having recess taken away. Battle of the Educators
Coding on Valentine’s Day
A group of students from the Computer Club visited Ms. Conard’s elementary class again. They included Aaron Angress, Joshua Guiang, Matthew Miller, Timothy Peck, Nicholas Quan, Zachary Tulloch and Samin Zaman. Students created a “Running Race” code with the fourth grade students. It involved two sprites running a race against each other. Zachary Tulloch taught the les-son. He was well prepared and gave a successful lesson. It involved event driven programming with logical if state-ments and the use of variables and the use of sound and color. The winner of the race exclaimed, “Happy Valen-tine’s Day!” Students were excited to try new commands and they met the challenges, we posed during the lesson!
n Friday, March 2, about thirty faculty members laced up their sneakers once again for the 17th An-nual Battle of the Educators. This night continues
to be a fun time for faculty, students, and parents alike. It also serves as a great fundraising event for the Booster Club, who in turn have generously donated monies to various programs throughout the district. Despite the inclement weather, the high school gym was packed again to capacity as spectators cheered on their favorite teachers and other players. The staff daz-zled the crowd with their basketball skills and nifty play. The team comprised of middle/elementary staff pulled out to a large lead at halftime. Things quickly changed as the high school team fought back to close the gap. A true “Battle of the Educators” ensued as the teams traded baskets. The valiant efforts of the high school team came up short and the middle/elementary team won by one point. Regardless of the score, everyone went home happy!!
“I laughed until my sides hurt.”
On Friday, January 19, Mount Sinai High School’s Drama Club hosted their first ever Improv Night, a chance for actors to come together and perform in front of an au-dience who participates as well. Improve is unscripted; everything happens on the spot so there is no predicting what may happen Each school year, the Drama Club stages a play in November and a musical in March. Junior Katherine Gudzik wanted to give students another opportunity to perform during the school year, and gained faculty and administrative support to get this event going. The theme was Heroes vs. Villains with hosts Noel Calamas and Sa-vannah Maher for their respective teams.
Playing for the Heroes were: Senior: Julia McElheron Juniors: Clare Dana, Alexandria Garrant,
and Katherine Gudzik Sophomores: Emily Foley and Jake Ritchie Freshmen: Nicolas Carbone and Aidan Johnson. Playing for the Villains were: Seniors: Mary Carlson, Jessica Galli,
Skyler Johnson, Delaney Kelly, and Sophie Looney Sophomore Jonathon Jacobson Freshmen: Carolyn Dexter and Logan Scott.
Both teams were energetic and creative, making fools of themselves for their own and the delight of the audi-ence. “I laughed until my sides hurt,” an audience mem-ber was overheard saying. The event was a huge success and we hope it will be the beginning of a wonderful tradition here at Mount Sinai High School.
Business Law Update
Business Law students had the opportunity to receive a detailed tour of the Riverhead Correctional Facility on January 23. Over the course of the year, students were educated on both criminal and civil laws through class-room discussions and activities. We examined repercus-sions that a defendant may be faced with based on court of law rulings. Overall, this was a great firsthand experience for stu-dents pursuing law as a profession and, encouraged stu-dents to always obey and follow the law.

MOUNT SINAI HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC & ART Mr. Lawrence Roberts, Music & Applied Arts Director
Co ngratu lati
“On March 10, 2018, I played my fifth and final pre-college recital at the Juilliard School. Joining the Juilliard community six years ago has inevitably become one of the most defin-ing moments of my adolescent life. It was only in retrospect, however, that I realized how much this meant for me in terms of the unique experience it had to offer beyond the com-munity at home in Mount Sinai.” “The Juilliard Pre-college is a program for talented middle and high school musicians where they spend each Saturday cultivating their art form through classes such as weekly private lessons, chamber music, orchestra rehearsals, and many more. Enrollment is through com-petitive auditioning and students come from all over the world, offering one of the most di-verse and highly talented student bodies one could imagine. What makes this program so unique is that you have the opportunity to be mentored by the world’s top musicians and professors who serve on the faculty at the Juilliard School, which is one of the best conserva-tories in the world.” “One of the most crucial things I learned during my time spent at Juilliard is to always be humble. No matter how many people compliment you or look up to you, there is always someone else who is more accomplished. Being a part of the precollege community has exposed me to a wide variety of opportunities and people that a lot of others would only encounter once they are in college. From making friends on the west coast to being able to travel to other countries to share what I love, none of it would have been possible without the invaluable influence of the Juilliard Pre-College. It is an experience and a community that I will forever treasure for the rest of my life.”
