Issue No. 13 13th May 2015 Dear Parents, Families and Friends, Today is the feast of Our Lady of Fatima when Our Lady appeared to three small children and asked them to pray for peace. I had the privilege of visiting Fatima during my recent leave and saw the site of this event. The overall impression I experienced at the shrine was one of incredible peace. I guess it was a timely reminder that praying for peace in a troubled world is always important. Teachers will be talking to the children about this incredible story of the three shepherd children in Portugal almost 100 years ago. It is good to be back at work and catching up with staff, parents and especially the students. I would like to express my gratitude to Paul Spain, Gemma Hale and Anne Sweeney for stepping into new roles for my time away and continuing so well with the school plans and activities. I would also like to express my thanks to the whole staff, Centacare, CSO, parents and fellow students for your prayers and support for the Versteeg family during the recent sad weeks. This week the Year 3 and Year 5 students are sitting the Naplan tests. As in the past, these tests are a snapshot of progress and should not be a cause of anxiety for children. The best preparation for the tests is a good night’s sleep. Last evening we had our School Council meeting. We are still looking for members to fill places now vacant as some parents have finished their time. The work is certainly not onerous and is very necessary support for the school. Please let me know if you are interested in helping out or would like further information about the meetings. The usual time on the school council is two years. Thank you for your ongoing support of the school. From the Assistant Principal—Paul Spain All students have been excited about the gymnastics lessons that commenced today and will run for six weeks. The school has been fortunate enough to have been able to secure the Airborne Gymnastics facility and also their qualified instructors to guide our students through the program. Gymnastics forms an important part of the Personal Development/Health/Physical Education curriculum having its own separate strand. In school gymnastics lessons, the focus is on the following areas:

Movement Coordination Control

As students progress through the levels, the variety and technical difficulty of movement performed increases. There are a number of benefits of conducting the gymnastics program, some of which include increased fitness levels, strength, flexibility, self-confidence and coordination. It is also wonderful to see the determination that many students display as they attempt to master a particular gymnastic manoeuvre. Gymnastics, like many areas of the school curriculum, only needs to be taught once every two years. At St Joseph’s gymnastics and dance are rotated every second year providing students with opportunities to participate in these enjoyable and enriching activities.

Any parents who do not have students in Year 6 who can assist with the setting up and serving of the Confirmation morning tea on Sunday 24th May from 10am until 12 noon are asked to contact Ms. Hale either by sending in a note or by email [email protected]

Mini Vinnies Report Winter Appeal

Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Cor 9:7

This term Mini Vinnies is supporting the St. Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. Thank you to our families who have already sent in donations of new clothing towards our winter appeal. We are hoping that every family can donate

at least one item of NEW winter clothing for a child eg. scarves, beanies, gloves, bed socks, PJ’s etc. Donations can be put in the baskets in your child’s classroom or can be left at the school office. These items will be presented to St. Vincent De Paul at the end of the term and will be used by their Care and Support Centre on Edward St. The clothing will then be distributed to families in need within the Wagga Wagga Community throughout the winter months. Our newly formed Mini Vinnies Group has been working hard to make a difference in the lives of people less fortunate and we hope that you can continue to support the efforts of these children.

Gymnastics Lessons – all students All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will attend Gymnastics lessons at Airborne Gym on Wednesdays for the rest of the term. The first lesson will be on Wednesday 13th May. Students will travel to and from Airborne Gym by bus. The cost of the gymnastics lessons is covered by the sport levy in your school fees. The permission note required for students to attend gymnastics was included in the general permission note that parents signed at the beginning of the year.
