    Elements of the site

  • The Silo, Sandnes, Norway

  • Sandnes has a history where industry was the vital part of the city. And there are traces of this industry in the very center at the city. One of these traces is a 50 meter high silo. This silo was buildt

without permission, and the building is not very popular in Sandnes. However, the silo is a landmark, not just representing the history of the city,

but it is also a physical landmark, as a way to orient youself in the city, as a recognisable volume.

The silo as a important element of our site, and could be the key to the identity of the new developed area, at the same time as it could be an important aspect of connecting the new developement to the

rest of the city, and its history.

  • The west side of Sandnes; the grid structure.

The east side of Sandnes; the organic structures.

  • The city center of Sandnes is divided in two urban structures. On the west side of the fjord the city follows a more strict gridplan,

while on the east side the city follows a more organic organisation, following the shapes of the landscape. Our site, beeing a landfill inbetween, could with our site connect these two structures.

THE TWO SIDES OF THE CITY

  • Torgallmenningen, Bergen, Norway

  • THE NEW ALMENNING

In Sandnes there are plenty of horisontal connectors, but the cross connectors are missing. In Norwegian urban planning traditions the Almenning, was a very common and important space,

connecting the city with both the sea and the mounitains. In Sandnes there is a need for this cross connector of the two sides of the city.

  • quatro canti, Palermo, Sicily

    Piazza Pretoria, Palermo, Sicily

  • THE PLAZA

The city of Sandnes should have also have a direct connector with the sea and the valley. At the crossing of these two new connectors both the sea, the valley and the two sides of the city is connected.

As in the roman urban planning, this cross is a important point in the city; it is the heart of the city. Here we would like to introduce another new element two the city of Sandnes; the plaza.
