Inthebook“Reengineeringauniversitydepartment”,authoredbyChristopherDerekCurryandJyrkiKatajainen,thebusinessprocessesofthecomputingdepartmentattheUniversityofCopenhagenareconsidered.Themainfocusisontheeducationalpartofthebusinessdoneatthedepartment.Thetopicscoveredarebusinessmodelling,requirementanalysis,andorganizationaldesignincludingtheinformationtechnologyneeded.Thewholedesignisbasedonthefundamentalideaofusingthetheoryofpsychologicaltypesinthedefinitionofsystemrequirements.

Thebookprojectwastriggeredbythebusinessproblemsexperiencedatthedepartment:highdropoutrate,longstudytimes,criticsfromstudents,budgetcuts,inadequateresearchfunding,braindrain,andweakmanagementstructure.Asapossibleremedyfortheseproblems,avisionaryplanhowtoreengineerthemostsignificantbusinessprocessesofthedepartmentisgiven.True,manyoftheproblemsaredifficultanddeeplyrootedinhistory,buttheworldwouldstopwithoutambitiousattemptsatsolvingthem.

Wehopethatthose,whowillreadthebook,

achieveacompetitiveadvantagewhentheirownteachingprocessesaretobeimprovedand

getabetterunderstandingoftheneedsanddemandsoftheirstudents.
