Red Tacton?

•RedTacton is a new Human Area

Networking technology [HAN]

•Human Area Networking (HAN) is a

technology that safely turns the surface of

the human body into a data transmission

path at speeds up to 10 Mbps between

any two points on the body.

Page 3: Redtacton 2007

History of HAN

•The concept of intra-body communication

was first proposed by IBM in 1996.

•This communication mechanism was later

evaluated and reported by several

research groups around the world.

Page 4: Redtacton 2007

History of HAN

•All those reported technologies had two

limitations

–The operating range through the body

was limited to a few tens of centimeters.

–The top communication speed was

only 40 bit/s!!

Page 5: Redtacton 2007

History of HAN

• These limitations were overcome by NTT

(Nippon Telegraph and Telephone

Corporation) located in Tokyo, Japan by

using photonic electric field sensors and

finally came up with a human area

networking technology called

„REDTACTON‟

Overview of RedTacton

•RedTacton is a new Human Area

Networking technology that turns the

surface of the human body as a safe,

high speed network transmission path.

•Communication is possible using any

body surfaces, such as the hands,

fingers, arms, feet, face, legs or toes.

Page 7: Redtacton 2007

Overview of RedTacton

• RedTacton works through shoes and

clothing as well.

• RedTacton uses the minute electric field

emitted on the surface of the human

body for data transmission.

What is RedTacton?

• TACTON: - “touch-act-on”

Meaning

“action triggered by touching”.

• RED: - It is an auspicious color

according to Japanese culture

Human Safety

• No current flowing into the human body from

RedTacton devices.

• Displacement current occurring in the body is

small enough.

• RedTacton conforms to the safety guideline of

induced current.

Page 12: Redtacton 2007

Features

• RedTacton has three main functional

features…

Touch

•Communication with just a touch

Broadband & Interactive

•Broadband does not deteriorate with

duplex operation and simultaneous access

by many users

Any Media

•Works with many transmission media common in human

life

Advantages

• It does not require the electrode to be in direct

contact with the skin.

• Superior than Infrared, Wi-Fi technology.

• High-speed communication is possible between

two arbitrary points on the body.

Page 20: Redtacton 2007

Disadvantages

• It has no compelling applications that aren‟t

already available.

• Too costly.

Conclusion

•RedTacton is an exciting new technology for human

area networking.

•This technology definitely stands out with

perfection, when transfer of data is fast, feasible

and more importantly reliable. So, in few years

from now everything is going to fall under this

super technology.
