Alternative content such as sports, music concerts, opera and ballet is a growing presence on cinema screens, as Sony Digital Cinema 4K digitisation of the global screen estate progresses. According to analysts Screen Digest, the total US market for alternative content was already worth $112m in 2010, which accounted for 58 percent of global alternative content cinema revenues of nearly $200m. The biggest alternative content events so far have been the New York Met’s live opera, which have been hugely popular in the US and worldwide. “Market growth and exhibitor interest is also attracting new entrants into the alternative content arena, from technical providers, global cultural and sporting brands,” notes Screen Digest senior analyst David Hancock. Alternative content is attractive to theatre owners because it can boost the average weekly occupancy of their theatres. Other recent events included Carmen in 3D, recorded at the Royal Opera House in London. The film was shown on Sony 4K RealD 3D projection systems at theatres around the world. In the UK, it was used by leading theatre chain Apollo Cinemas to lead its ‘MORE’ campaign, giving consumers a wide range of alternative viewing content. “The Sony 4K technology provides outstanding image and sound quality, and enables us to extend our programming to alternative content,” says Nicole Oakley, Marketing Manager at Apollo Cinemas. Elsewhere, soccer has again been a draw, following widespread distribution of the FIFA World Cup last year. The intense rivalry between Istanbul soccer teams Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe was played out in 3D in cinemas in Turkey earlier this year. Leading German cinema chain CinemaxX is reapingrecord rewards thanks to its visionary investment indigital projection technology. The exhibitor, whichoperates 292 screens in 34 complexes, including threein Denmark, began its transition to digital 4K and 3Dwith Sony 18 months ago believing that the technologywould give it a substantial competitive edge.

Since then, the publicly listed company, controlledby the Tele-Munchen Group and headquartered inHamburg, has seen revenues rocket with the help ofa marketing campaign which extols the virtues of theunrivalled 3D quality on the Sony Digital Cinema 4Kwith RealD system.

“CinemaxX has always been one of the majorinnovators when it comes to cinema in Germany –from the design of the auditoria right down to thesmallest technical detail,” says CinemaxXspokesperson, Arne Schmidt. “Working with Sony,we can set trends for the cinema of the future. Wehave created a whole new cinematic experience witha level of quality not seen before, and thereforeencouraged audiences to go to the cinema.”

CinemaxX has installed nearly 100 Sony SRX-R220 and SRX-R320 projectors with the RealD3D adaptor enabling each multiplex to brand its 3Dexperience as Maxximum 3D. The company alsouses the Sony brand to communicate to its audiencethat the experience they will receive is delivered withSony Digital Cinema 4K technology.

“When we decided to use the combination ofSony 4K and RealD we were sure to have the perfecttechnical base for a perfect 3D image. Sony was theonly company able to deliver 4K technology to ourscreens which will be the technology not just fortoday but for tomorrow.”

Recently, CinemaxX has screened live opera fromthe Met in New York and ballet from the Bolshoitheatre in Moscow.

“Even the Royal Wedding was part of a specialscreening in some cinemas,” notes Schmidt. “Themarket for alternative content continues to grow.”

Oliver Pasch, Head of Digital Cinema Europe atSony Professional, comments: “Over the last fouryears we've been urging exhibitors to move to 4K todifferentiate their movie experiences with theexperience in the home, which was 2K or HD. Thatstory has now changed. In April, Sony introduced aprofessional camera that delivers true 4K resolutionand beyond, and consumer 4K products seem to beon the horizon, so 4K will effectively become the futurestandard for moving images. The business case isnow imperative for 4K because if cinemas don't haveit then what they are offering will be at lower resolutionto what their customers will have at home.”

Zurich Cinemas in Central New York State hasalways been ahead of the curve with new technologyand has now converted the majority of its theatres todigital with Sony Digital Cinema 4K.

The circuit has 11 locations, including eight first-runtheatres, one discount house and two twin drive-ins.The eight first-run locations now feature 100 per centdigital projection, including its nine-screen PittsfordTheatre in Rochester and its eight-screen theatres inRome and Geneva. Out of a total of 70 screens acrossall of the company's locations, 65 are now digital and25 of these will feature RealD 3D. By the end of June, the circuit's discount Hollywood Theatre in Mattydale isalso due to install a Sony 4K projector with RealD 3D.

Chairman and president of Zurich Cinema

Corporation Conrad Zurich and his wife Lindaestablished Zurich Cinemas in 1966. They haveincorporated new technologies over the years, attempting to improve the on-screen presentationand comfort in the auditorium and they areconvinced that converting to digital is givingaudiences a new, distinctive experience.

“The picture and sound quality that the customerexperiences with digital projection is superb,” saysConrad Zurich, who can now guarantee no morescratches and glitches in the quality of footage. “Thebrightness and clarity of the image isoutstanding…Whether the customer is there foropening night or six weeks into a film's engagement, they can be sure they are getting a pristine image onscreen.”

The decision to go for Sony Digital Cinema 4K wasall about achieving the best experience possible, having looked across the market at digital options. “4Kprojection has four times the resolution of a 2Kprojection system, 2K presentations are roughlyequivalent to a HDTV presentation a customer can getat home,” says Zurich. “Simply stated, 4K gives theconsumer a superior picture to what they can get inthe home environment.” He explains that the decisionto go with Sony was also all about quality andperformance: “In our estimation, Sony has the topproduct for the digital market – which is 4K digitalprojection systems with 3D capabilities.”

Zurich Cinemas Director of Operations JamisonMills is convinced that 3D is here to stay. “I think that3D could easily become the norm for moviewatching. The depth and beauty watching scenes in3D on the big screen is breathtaking,” he says. “Youjust become immersed in a 3D movie – it feels likeyou're right there with the actors.”

Beyond the presentation of 4K and 3D features,Zurich Cinemas has plans to show a range ofdifferent content using the technology. “Outside ofthe traditional Hollywood movies (both in 2D and 3D),there are several alternative content areas currentlyavailable and more to come featuring operas, ballets, music concerts, and sporting events,” says Zurich.

Wimbledon tennis championships in 2011 providetheatre owners throughout the world with a majoropportunity for showing alternative content to theircustomers. The event is shot in 3D and distributedvia satellite to cinema screens. It allows theatres thathave invested in the Sony Digital Cinema 4Kprojection system with the RealD 3D lens adaptorsto realise the benefits of all the Wimbledon drama atthe highest possible quality.

“"Most people cannot get a ticket to Wimbledon;we are always sold out. So I think watchingWimbledon in 3D in the cinema or at home is as nearas you can get to actually being here. That’s whatexcites me about the technology and I think anythingthat translates the excitement and delight of beinghere when you’re in a cinema or at home that has tobe a really positive thing,” says Ian Ritchie, ChiefExecutive of The All England Lawn Tennis Club.

“You may have seen 3D football and golf fromSony before,” says Mark Grinyer, 3D/SportsSolutions Business Head, Sony Professional. “Thosesports take place on big fields and in big panoramasand they look marvellous in 3D. Tennis is different.Tennis is small, it’s very compact, so our camerasare going to get right in there into the play, you’regoing to see the sweat, going to feel the heat ofCentre Court. Wimbledon itself is a cauldron ofemotion during those final days and I think thatcauldron of emotion will translate through 3D rightthrough to the viewing public.”

Fujio Nishida, President of Sony Europecomments, “We are delighted to be working withThe All England Lawn Tennis Club to bring such ahigh profile sporting event to consumers around the

world in 3D. Watching tennis in High Definition 3D isa stunning experience, bringing the speed of theaction and the emotions of the occasion to life; it isas close to the atmosphere and excitement ofCentre Court as actually being there. With the Live3D Wimbledon experience available in hundreds of3D cinemas across the world, many more people willbe able to enjoy one of the world’s most iconicsporting events as though they were actually atWimbledon.”

Beach Movie Bistro in Virginia Beach opened in May2011, complete with seven screens equipped withSony Digital Cinema 4K projection systems.

The theatre offers a gourmet-dining, movie-watchingexperience and is the debut facility in Virginia for BeachMovie Bistro Inc. It will be operated by Act V Theaters.President of Act V, Robert Perkins, describes howBeach Movie Bistro is the result of a total make-over ofan old theatre on the same site: “We took the buildingdown to its bare bones and started over – it was a greatopportunity to take a tired old facility and turn it intosomething really wonderful. We’ve completely rebuiltthe auditoriums with all new seats, tables, lighting andinstalled new screens with 4K digital projection to reallyheighten the experience and make it state of the art.”

The decision to go with Sony 4K rather than 2K wasa combination of wanting a great experience foraudiences, but also future-proofing the theatre. “Wewanted to install 4K so that the we were one stepahead,” says Perkins. “The industry is evolving andequipment is changing so quickly… We think the Sonysystem offers the best presentation and a really brightpicture.”

In its first two weeks the theatre showed two 3Dpictures and Perkins points to a raft of 3D releasescoming up in the near future. He’s also looking forwardto being able to show new sorts of programming, taking the dine-while-you-watch experience intodifferent areas of entertainment, using digitaltechnology. “We think there’s a model in place for operaand we want to show sporting events and otherworldwide events, such as the Oscars, where peoplewant to come to a social environment,” he says. “4Kmakes all this more possible for us.”

The venue is booked solid with screenings everyday of the week and there are plans down the line toequip the room with a 3D option.

The VillageTheatre on

Coronado Islandis being fitted

out with a retrolook (right)

Vintage Cinemas is launching the third theatre in itsCalifornian chain of retro movie theatres – the VillageTheatre on San Diego County’s Coronado Island. Theall-new renovation project will see the historic theatrebrought back to life, complete with Sony 4K and 3Dfacilities, giving local residents state of the art digitalprojection.

The project to restore the Village Theatre began tenyears ago. Originally a run-down single screen theatre,in 2000 it closed and shortly afterwards VintageCinemas and CEO Lance Alspaugh first talked to thelandlord about a rescue plan. With the generousassistance from the City of Coronado RedevelopmentAgency, the theatre is now a state-of-the-art triplex, with a main auditorium of 200 seats and two screeningrooms of 45 seats each. Vintage Cinemas contributedall furniture, fixtures and equipment.

“We took the opportunity to explore digital cinemapossibilities for the new venue,” says Alspaugh. “Afterreviewing the equipment, options and technologycurrently available, we decided on Sony 4K digitalcinema. We were impressed by Sony’s image andsaturation at demonstrations and, being a hard linepurist, I wanted the images at the Village to match orexceed the visual experience of film and Sony Digitaldoes just that.”

They chose to add 3D to the mix using RealD in themain auditorium and one screening room. The plan forthe future is to expand the cinema’s menu by offering

special events such as operas, sporting events and liveperformances using the Sony 4K system through up-coming satellite technology.

Alspaugh envisions a large local audience for theclassic cinema, which will be bolstered by San Diegoresidents and others visiting Coronado Island. “Sony isa powerful and convincing marketing tool that denotesquality and we expect it will help drive movie hungrypeople to the new Village Theatre upon opening and foryears after,” he says.

Vintage Cinemas also owns and operates the 85-year-old Vista Theatre and 75-year-old Los Feliztheatre, both in Los Angeles. Alspaugh also renovatedthe Vista, taking a forlorn operation and transforming itfor an opening in 2000.
