There are no perfect synonyms; it means exactly what it sounds like. I use it as a cover-all term to describe most of what I do not wish to become: one who takes himself too seriously. In the ninth grade, my science teacher was vexed. Sharing the Changeless Christ in a Changing World!
“Let your gentleness be evident
to all. The Lord is near. Do not
be anxious about anything, but
in every situation, by prayer
and petition, with thanksgiving,
present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which
transcends all understanding,
will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus.”
– Philippians 4:5-7
I think my favorite word so
far this year might be
“vexed.” Irritated, annoyed,
frustrated, displeased. There
are no perfect synonyms; it
means exactly what it sounds
like. I use it as a cover-all
term to describe most of what
I do not wish to become: one
who takes himself too
seriously. In the ninth grade,
my science teacher was
vexed. One of my classmates
antagonized him to the point
of throwing a graduated
cylinder across the room and,
upon shattering a piece of
Wayzata High School
property on the wall, said to
the class, “Now look what
you’ve done!” I get secret,
weird, comedic pleasure out
of situations like this, and out
of watching vexed people on
the bus, in the city, or in our
church. They scurry around
like reptiles with bloodshot
eyes and faces that look as
though someone has always
just awoken them from a
deep sleep using a fog horn.
Consistently vexed people
are like the best Clint
Eastwood characters: it’s not
what they’re doing, but what
they look like they are about
to do.
But sadly, I too get vexed.
For all of my easygoing
shuffle and tomfoolery, I am
at times no better than
the brooding, cranky
businessman sitting
next to me on the
Metro Transit. Let me
be clear and serious,
in case this is any
secret: I want to be on
staff at Redeemer for
many years. I love this
church and I want to
serve my Lord here, in
any way that I possibly
can. About a month
ago, I found myself
suddenly tossed in the
middle of a ridiculous
arena of church
politics. There’s no
need to write about it
here. I became bitter, I
felt anxious. I was
vexed for at least a
week.
Then, in a matter of hours,
my heart was changed
completely. One evening, I
explained everything that
had taken place to my fiancé.
I confessed to her that I
honestly didn’t know what to
do. She listened for awhile,
and then shared a gem from
the Old Testament with me:
“The Lord will fight for you; (Reflections continued on page 6)
