Reddam House High School Newsletter Volume 17 Issue 26
Friday 1st September 2017
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
What a magnificent time the Year 10 students are hav-
ing on the slopes of Thredbo as they enjoy their annual
Ski Camp. Mrs. Symonds has reported that the snow is
better than ever before and that the students are hav-
ing a wonderful time.
Some photos have been sent back to school, which I
include, and we all look forward to their full report.
They are expected back later this evening having
spent the morning getting in their last runs.
With the Year 10 students away and the Year 11 and
Year 12 students busy with their Final Trial Examinations
respectively, the Bondi Campus has been exception-
ally quiet.
In the Middle School it has been business as usual.
The Year 7 students and their parents have been
asked to select their one elective for Year 8. This needs
to be done by Friday 8th September by completing
the Google doc Sophie sent home to parents. I in-
clude the link should you still need to make your selec-
tions.
Year 8 (2018) Subject Selection form
The Year 8 students and their parents had the Subject
Selection Evening on Tuesday where they heard from
teachers of the nine electives available to them. All
the subjects seem so interesting and engaging that I
hear from the students that they are having difficulty
selecting two. This needs to be done by Tuesday 12th
September by completing the google doc sent home
to parents by Sophie. The link is included should you
still need to do this.
Year 9 (2018) Subject Selection Form
For either Year 7 or Year 8 students struggling with their
selection it might be worth chatting to the teacher of
the subject that is being contemplated to get further
clarity on the suitability of the subject for you. Mrs.
Oud, Mr. Garratt or any of the student’s teachers are
available to discuss this with them to help with the de-
cision.
The Ninja Warrior obstacle
course competition for Year 8’s
on Thursday was won by Emily
Evans who did the entire
course in a handstand: incredi-
ble. The house that won the
event was Piper followed by
Bennelong, Darling and in
fourth place was Macquarie.
Having watched the Soccer-
oos being defeated by Japan
on Thursday night, which will
make qualifying for the Soccer World Cup in Russia
next year very difficult, I am pleased to share the news
that three of our students have had remarkable
achievements in soccer this week.
Madeleine Martin-Bygrave and Miro McIntyre Clere
playing with their Pagewood Team in the ESFA U14
Championship Division 1 Grand Final, defeating Easts 2
- 1 in a very exciting and tense game. Both Miro and
Madeleine had great games at centre back and left
midfield respectively. Well done girls.
Fox Bengtsson, playing for Manly United FC has been
participating in the Chairman of Korea Under 15/16's
International Football Tournament in South Korea, were
never expected to make it out of their pool but they
not only did that but made it into the top 8 after beat-
ing the Korean West National team 4-2.
Fox’s team also fared better against the Japanese Na-
tional team than the Socceroos did last night, drawing
with them, with Fox scoring the equalizer. In the top
eight knock out stage, they played the Korean East
National team yesterday and unfortunately went
down 2-1. Congratulations Fox and the Manly team for
their wonderful achievement.
Happy Father’s Day on Sunday for all the dads. I trust
your very appreciative children will spoil you.
Have a great week ahead,
Dave Pitcairn

INTRODUCTION
The Reddam Debating Society is an open social debating competition between
students in years 7, 8, 9, 10 & 11. The aim is to provide an opportunity for students to mix and discuss policy ideas on how to best build a brighter future.
Each debate surrounds a motion on a way in which society should change, and the
winning team gets to establish their policy as the consensus position for the society.
Students are given 20 minutes of intensive coaching followed by three 30 minute rounds of debating. Music and food consumption are encouraged in a relaxed social atmosphere that
is ideal for beginners and experts.
Students need only bring a device to type on or writing materials, and an eagerness to argue. The aim of the championship is to solve real world problems with students being given the
freedom to approach every problem however they choose; the only limit being peer feed-back.
