Page 2: Red Hook Guide

Red Hook is unlike anywhere else. Surrounded by water on three sides, Red Hook is isolated from the rest of Brooklyn, giving the whole neighborhood its laid back yet active feel that locals and visitors have come to love.

There are many distinct shops, restaurants and

art spaces that call Red Hook home. Everything

from odd knick-knacks, offbeat clothing and

authentic antiques are all right here in the

neighborhood. Even the food, from the delicious

cookies from Baked to the famous dumplings

at the Good Fork, is stamped with that

one-of-a-kind vibe you will find throughout the

neighborhood. You can’t beat the view in—or

from—Red Hook. The community is a mix of

green spaces, waterfront views, and industrial

architecture. Cavart Glass (76 Van Dyke Street),

for example, is the only landmarked industrial

building to still house an industrial use today.

For the only place to catch a full frontal view of

the Statue of Liberty in the city, just head down

to Valentino Pier, or take advantage of the green

spaces provided by Fairway and Ikea to relax,

take in the views, and watch the tugs go by.

HISTORY

Red Hook was settled by the Dutch in 1636, and fast became one of the most important trading and transportation nodes in NYC. The most active Port on the Eastern Seaboard from the 1850’s through the mid-20th century, Red Hook boasted tens of thousands of industrial and maritime related jobs. Containerization and globalization reduced port activity and manufacturing in Red Hook, which led to a long period of economic decline. In the last decade, Red Hook’s working waterfront has made a comeback. Today, Red Hook is home to businesses that provide integral infrastructure, construction, and transportation services for the NYC consumer market. Red Hook is also home to small niche food and creative manufacturing firms, such as Six Point, Stumptown Coffee, and Red Hook Winery.

In October 2012, Red Hook was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Red Hook is in the process of rebuilding, with many shops and eateries already open. To learn more about the rebuilding process, visit restoreredhook.org.

Red Hook’s diverse waterfront parks, industrial architecture and unique street art make it the ideal place to explore by bike. Once here, there are plenty of places along Van Brunt St. to park, in addition to ample bike parking at Ikea and Fairway. It is easily accessible with its connections to Manhattan by ferry or via the Brooklyn Bridge. You can also take the ferry from Governors Island to Pier 6, and jump onto the Brooklyn Greenway for a short 2-mile ride to the Hook. For an interactive map including bike paths and routes, visit brooklyngreenway.org. Don’t have a bike? Visit citibikenyc.com to find a bike-share station near you, or visit your local bike shop and inquire about rentals.

SUBWAY/BUS Take the A C or F to Jay Street/MetroTech, then take the B61 bus to Red Hook. Or, take the R 2 3 4 or 5 train to Borough Hall. Exit the station on Court Street and walk two blocks south to the intersection of Schermerhorn Street. Catch the B57 bus to Red Hook at IKEA Terminal.

CAR Brooklyn Bridge to 1st exit. BQE to Atlantic Ave exit. Make a left onto Columbia St.

WATER TAXI For schedules, visit www.NYwatertaxi.com

BICYCLE Easily accessible via Brooklyn Greenway from York Street in DUMBO to Van Brunt Street.
