MATTERS On May 10, 2007, MADD Canada launched its latest public awareness effort, Campaign 911 - a Canada-wide campaign designed to encourage and empower the Canadian public to call 911 to report suspected impaired drivers. National President Karen Dunham was joined by OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino, the Canadian Police Association, the Canadian Association of Police Boards, and police representatives from across the GTA. #TAXI is the campaign's Title Sponsor. #TAXI 's commitment to safe and responsible behaviour, on and off the roads in Canada, make them a natural partner of MADD Canada. As part of its campaign, MADD Canada has released billboards, bus shelter posters, radio public service announcements and instructive 911 background materials. Over the course of the summer, the organization will unfold a community-based grassroots action plan for its more than 100 local MADD Canada Chapters and Community Leaders across the country. “We can all make a difference in saving lives and preventing impaired driving crashes if we call 911 and report to police when we see a suspected impaired driver,” says Karen Dunham. “Calling 911 is one tangible and effective way Canadians can help the police in apprehending an impaired driver. Campaign 911

Our key campaign message: Anytime Canadians see a suspected impaired driver, call 911 andreport the incident to the police. In this way, all Canadians can play an important role in keeping

our roads safe and in reducing impaired driving crashes.

At the campaign launch event, Mrs. Dunham notedthat the organization worked closely with the police onthe safety issues surrounding this campaign. “MADDCanada has a long history of working beside andcollaborating with police to achieve public policy goalsand to help deliver the “don’t drive impaired” message.Given our valued police relationships and our mutualgoals, we are very pleased to have the police supportingthis campaign. MADD Canada has worked closely withthe police on the campaign’s safety issues and ourmaterials have been vetted by the police organizationshere with us.”

At the launch, Mrs. Dunham also acknowledged themany organizations who are currently urging citizens tocall 911. “We know the concept of calling 911 is notnew to some communities across the country. We thankall those groups and the police who for years havecarried this idea forward. But MADD Canada is lookingto raise the public’s awareness to new heights andenhance the existing 911 efforts in making it national inscope. We hope more Canadians will know what to dothe next time they see an impaired driver on the road. Inthis vein, we encourage more organizations and themedia to pick up the Campaign 911 message and, together, we can all work at ridding our roadways of thethreat of an impaired driving incident.”

It is hard to believe that this is mylast column written as NationalPresident. My three-year term hasflown by – and as MADD Canada’sspokesperson I have learned so muchabout myself and our country. Ourfamily’s ordeal with impaired drivingwas life-altering for all of us. Yet, inspeaking with so many within ourMADD organization over the pastthree years, I realize there are many, many Canadians who have turnedtheir family tragedy into a passionatemission to prevent this fromhappening to others. In many ways, our actions in the aftermath of ourrespective tragedies are also life-altering. I believe this is what is soremarkable about MADD Canada.

Seeing first-hand the power of ourindividual actions has beenrewarding. In thinking about all ofour volunteers across Canada whoare making a difference, I want to tellyou that representing MADD Canadaon the national stage has been atremendous honour.

Many people are asking me if Ihave any regrets with the time Iserved as National President. No, noregrets. Upon reflection though, Imust say that I will never accept thefact that each year so many familiesare forever impacted by impaireddriving. One thing I never thought Iwould be able to do was read tributesat our national candlelight vigils.

Yet, in reading the family tributesand connecting with the loved onesover the past few years, participatingin this annual ceremony has made mea stronger person. The faces up onthe screen, the new faces with eachpassing vigil, provided newfoundresolve to fight even harder for theelimination of impaired driving.

The end of this crime cannotcome soon enough. Far too manyCanadians are grieving todaybecause of the senseless act ofsomeone driving impaired. I intendto continue my fight – our fight –with the hope that we can moveCanada closer to safer roads and theend of impaired driving.

Also, it was a challenge and aprivilege to be the victim’s voice incalling for changes in our country’slaws at both federal and provinciallevels. I never forgot the fact that Iwas speaking for all families whoseloved ones are forever gone orforever changed.

It was often frustrating whenpressing governments for change butbecause the Chapters and volunteersalways seemed to pull together, myjob was made much easier. It alsohelped to reinforce our messages incommunities throughout our country. Our chorus of individual voices doesmake an impact.

Thank you! There are many people I would

like to thank with this final column.First, I am very appreciative of thework by the previous nationalpresidents in paving the road tochange and making a strongfoundation upon which I couldfollow. Second, I am most gratefulfor the support of the National Boardover the course of my term. Third, Iwant to thank all those MADDfriends I have made along the way,who have made this such anenjoyable experience.

I was fortunate to represent theorganization on numerous specialoccasions – receiving our award bythe Canadian Medical Association, inJapan assisting MADD Japan, welcoming new Chapters with theirkick-off campaigns, as well asattending the US conferences andworking with our Americancounterparts in MADD US.

Serving MADD Canada asNational President was a veryenriching experience. Again, thankyou. So, with this message, I’d prefernot to say farewell, but rather“Onward!”

“This weekend is very important for our membership,”explains Karen Dunham, MADD Canada’s NationalPresident. “Families and friends are able to share theirexperiences and come together to remember and paytribute to loved ones who have been killed or injured as aresult of an impaired driving crash. The weekend providesguidance, companionship and support for those victimswho are coping with traumatic, life-altering experiences.”

Sherry Caves, a wife and mother who survived not onebut two impaired driving crashes, set the tone of theweekend with her inspirational keynote address. Despitenumerous surgeries and years of pain, Sherry hasspearheaded many initiatives for people with disabilitiesand speaks out on impaired driving. She has been anincredible asset to the MADD Canada organization andher strength and determination are awe inspiring.

The annual National Candlelight Vigil of Hope andRemembrance was especially moving. It includedprocessionals with police and victims, music by theaward-winning Infinitus String Quartet, and the lighting ofcandles in tribute to those loved ones killed or injured dueto impaired driving.

The closing keynote gave participants a chance to hear5 powerful female voices. MADD Canada’s Past, Presentand Future Presidents - Susan MacAskill, CarolynSwinson, Louise Knox, Karen Dunham, and MargaretMiller - shared their experiences about the organization.

Other highlights of the weekend included wonderfulworkshops on coping with bereavement, surviving lossand navigating Canada’s judicial system. There were alsospecial workshops for youth and personal healing.
