For my family and friends, including many clients it�would come as no big surprise that I’m a big fan of�various art forms, my favorites being music and visual�arts. The arts are an integral� part of our community�and offer all of us a sensory connection to the more�creative aspects of our life and those around us. Art,�whether it’s a well�-�written song or a beautiful abstract�painting can provide an escape from the all too�familiar mundane as�pects of daily life.�

The arts have also become a primary strategy in most�of the work I do for clients and can dramatically�change any environment when implemented properly.�In fact, these creative treasures have the ability to�transform public space an�d attract people, increasing�levels of activity and movement in areas that may�otherwise lack urban vitality. There is no better�example of this than the Ross Street Piano, which will�grace our downtown streets again on�June 7�th�for the�Official Ross St�reet Patio Kick Off event beginning at�11:45 a.m.�–� 1 p.m. where the piano will remain for the�duration of the summer.�

Since its inception in 2010, various local artists have�been asked to make the piano their canvas, allowing it�to be much more than just� a musical instrument for all�of us to enjoy. This year is no exception with Brian�Usher sharing his skills and passion for art this�summer. He�grew up in Southern California and has�been�making art for much of his life. He studied�drawing and painting�at the Academy of Art in San�Francisco in 2002, and received�his Bachelor of Fine�Arts degree in Printmaking from California State�University Long Beach in 2006.� He�taught�screen�-�printing at Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro,�California, and has al�so volunteered with the�Printmaking department at Red Deer College. Brian�has exhibited�his work at�The Brewery Art Colony in�Los Angeles and has recently had a collaborative piece�with fellow printmaker Tim Musso shown�in�”Collision and Equilibrium�–� Am�erican Youth�Printmaking Exhibition” in conjunction with this�year’s Shanghai Youth Biennial in Shanghai, China.�He now resides in Red Deer, Alberta,�were he�continues to explore a variety of themes and artistic�mediums in his work.�

Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz�as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the�world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gram�acho, located on the outskirts of Rio�de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”�-� self�-�designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint”�the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with t�hese inspiring�characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage�reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re�-�imagine�their lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT and�COUNTDOWN TO� ZERO) and co�-�directors João Jardim and Karen Harley have�great access to the entire process and, in the end, offer stirring evidence of the�transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.�
