Chairman of the judging panel, photographer Eamonn McCabe said “This stunning photograph would grace any competition and easily won this one. The Red Arrows make their perfect formation appearing as if from the sun to form a weird creature of the skies. Brilliant, would look great on any front page.”. Awarding the prize of a Canon EOS 60D, sponsored by Jessops, Lieutenant Colonel Mike Neville, Commanding Officer 3 Regiment Army Air Corps based at Wattisham Flying Station said “Although the Red Arrows are now stationed elsewhere their history is firmly rooted in Suffolk with the ‘Black Arrows’ Hunter here at Wattisham.” A special honorary award was made to Allan Powell, 81, who was also official photographer for the prize giving event. Deputy Chair of Sudbury’s Gainsborough’s House and fellow competition judge Alan Swerdlow said “Alan's beautiful photographs ring true: he knew the period as a young man, and it shows in the simplicity of his images.” Ballingdon Mill is an Artists Retreat which also offers short breaks in Gainsborough Country. The competition was run in parallel with artist Andrew Cross’s ongoing residency at Ballingdon Mill on the subject of aeronautics in the Suffolk landscape. Due to its proximity to Europe, East Anglia was known colloquially by the Military as an aircraft carrier. The region also has an illustrious link with aero technical development and invention, most famously the parachute, radar and jet engine. Competition organiser Theo Bird of Ballingdon Mill said, "I would like to thank the judges, all entrants, and Wattisham Flying Station.” Winning photo here: http://bit.ly/1nTNdKL Prize giving here: http://bit.ly/1gJtM25 ENDS NOTES
