Background and challenges

Description and main innovation

Achievements

Rectenna Array

With the development of 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), many everyday objects and

sensors will be connected to the internet.

Each IoT device or network node requires a power source to realize data acquisition and

transmission.

The challenge is to capture radio frequency (RF) energy from the ambient and convert it

into DC using a rectifying antenna (rectenna).

Antennas and Propagation

IT-Lisboa

The objective is to develop a 2D rectenna array, feasible for low power

density environments, at 5.8 GHz.

Proposition of a simplified design

methodology.

Innovative result presentation as a

power map.

2D, single layer, and low-cost structure.

2D Energy Harvest Frequency Selective

Surface concept.

The single element structure prototype DC power measurements shown excellent agreement with the

expected simulation results.

The first array structure simulations are already finished and the prototype is

under development.
