“Education’s purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one.”

Malcolm Forbes

Page 5: RECRUITMENT - National Law University Delhi

The logo of National Law University, Delhi is composed of 3 elements: N (N), L (L) and U (U) which are interlinked by the second element (L or Law). In its totality it represents the harmonious confluence of disparate elements (disciplines) and levels: a rule that Law and its executive, the judicial system, also performs. Individually, the “N” and “U” are downward-and upward - facing respectively, symbolising polar (and complementary) outlooks through which Law threads its way. The extension of “L” or Law to the last level (or layer) attempts to encapsulate the concerns of social justice. The emphasis is on the rule of Law (represented by the ‘L’) in promoting social justice, particularly targeting the vulnerable population. Its columnar arrangement suggests an upholding of justice, equality, fraternity and human rights in all their facets in a secular democracy.

MESSAGE FROM THEVICE-CHANCELLOR’S DESK

It gives me immense pleasure to present you the Batch of 2020. It is the eighth batch of students to graduate from our University. It has been a privilege to have mentored a group of such dynamic and motivated young students, groomed to face the challenges that lie ahead. The rigorous selection process at our University has been designed to ensure that students of the highest calibre are admitted and trained in a holistic manner, and encouraged to engage with ideas and concepts related to law and the arts. It is thus quite innate that we have produced Rhodes, InLaks, DAAD, Columbia and Cambridge Scholars, as well as UPSC and Judicial Services examination toppers, amongst many other achievements.

Over the past four years, I have seen this batch explore its potential by demonstratingextraordinary levels of enthusiasm, dedication and commitment. The Batch of 2020 does not shirk away from challenges; it sets high standards, goes on to surpass them, and raises the bar for everyone else.

Our students receive a comprehensive legal education which endows them with crucial analytical skills, and empowers them to critically evaluate laws, the functioning of the legal system and the interplay between the legal system and society. The vibrant clinical education programs and seminar courses help our students engage with the legal system through their areas of interest, ensuring that National Law University, Delhi, through the character of its instruction, remains committed to broadening the base of legal education. It is of no surprise that due to the consistent efforts of the students, the NIRF has ranked the University as the 2 nd best law school in the country.

The diverse interests and backgrounds of these students are also reflected in their internship experiences. They have interned at leading national and international law firms, corporate houses, reputed non-governmental organizations and public sector undertakings, as well as under senior litigators and higher judiciary members. I believe that through these internships, they have gained invaluable exposure - which will enable them to enter the professional world.

This batch has been instrumental in furthering the reputation of the University by excelling not only academically, but also in various co-curricular activities such as conferences, moot court competitions, mediation and negotiation competitions, literary events, debates and sports competitions. The erudite students of this batch strive to be responsible legal professionals, which I trust will make them loyal and committed members of your organization.

I invite you to National Law University, Delhi to interact with the students of the Batch of 2020. Their presence has enriched the University and I am confident that they will positively contribute to the growth of not just the legal profession, but also of the nation as a whole.

Being established in 2008 we are celebrating a ‘Decade of Excellence’ of our existence, but for us the best is yet to come.

MESSAGE FROM THEREGISTRAR’S DESK

With profound pride and honour, I present the Batch of 2020. My interactions with these students gave me an insight into their enlightened thoughts and potential for a promising future, inspiring confidence in me for them to be representing the University into the outside competitive world of law and legal matters.

The students of this batch not only demonstrated their excellence in upholding high academic standards but also made considerable personal progress. They took umpteen advantages of the teacher to student ratio (1:10) and engaged in intellectually stimulating discussions, moot court competitions, lectures, and opportunities to travel aboard through student exchange programs.

The University is renowned to focus on the holistic and integrated development of its studentsand enable them to be able legal professionals, armed with both a theoretical foundation and a practical knowledge of the complexities and the nitty-gritty of this demanding profession. Students are treated as capable adults, with the atmosphere of this University designed to be a microcosm of the professional world outside – thus mentally invigorating them into thinking bigger by exposing them to constant national and international engagements. The students of this batch made use of opportunities to learn and grow by taking responsibilities to organise workshops, seminars and conferences within the University. They honed their legal skills to real-life situations through programmes like mooting, clinical exercises, legal aid advisoryprojects and a plethora of cultural and literary activities. Their personal growth, coupled with their academic proficiency, gained from series of

challenges presented to them such as an extensive entry system and an exhaustive syllabus; which makes me look forward to their capable engagements with the professional world.

Inculcated with a sense of responsibility by assuming roles of leadership catering to the diverse nature of India, they were introduced to external affiliations like Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access to Legal Education (IDIA) that exposed their weaknesses and strengths, and taught them to optimize and enhance their learned traditions with modern practices. Their sensitivity towards the rights of others, developed by going through a process of self-awareness during the tenure of their study, is unparalleled.

For a university that believes that the future of society lies in the hands of its youth, the Batch of 2020 gives me hope as they are adept at their socially relevant education and thus can contribute to changing the social fabric of the country..

A DESCRIPTION OF THE BATCH

Graduating as one of the first few batches of a young university seeking to make its mark comes with its fair share of expectations and responsibilities. The Batch of 2020 of National Law University, Delhi has time and again stood up to and conquered such challenges.

Our class is a healthy mix of students hailing from various parts of India, which adds value to the holistic education provided by the University. It allows for a more diverse, engaging and enriching academic experience. Being the eighth batch of the University, we have had the opportunity of being both mentees (of seniors) and mentors (to juniors), as well as the chance to spearhead the growth and development of our institution.

The class comprises of students who are not just academically inclined and committed to the highest of scholarly pursuits, but also those who display a voracious zeal for co-curricular activities such as moot court competitions, debates, negotiation and mediation competitions, Model United Nations (MUN) conferences, and participation in national and international conferences, seminars and courses.

Our enthusiasm also extends to sports, where we have won numerous laurels at the national level. We have also had immense international exposure, with students from our class having participated in various international moot court competitions, mediation and negotiation competitions and student exchange programs.

Apart from having gained valuable experience and professional skills while being associated with notable advocates, law firms, corporate houses, think tanks, and non-governmental organizations, we have also been

instilled with a sense of social responsibility. We have worked under various research projects like the Death Penalty Research Project, NALSA, the Tihar Jail Project and several initiatives under the umbrella of the Centre for Communication Governance.

We have also been actively involved as research assistants for some of our professors, and have assisted them on an array of assignments ranging from empirical field work to doctrinal research.

The Batch of 2020 has seen immense personal and professional growth through its journey at this University, attributable, in no small part, to the University itself and the infrastructure, mentorship and opportunities it works so hard to provide to its students. As we near the end of this journey, our earnest hope is that this growth shines through to you. We hope you will enjoy acquainting yourself with our batch as much as we have enjoyed our own development over the past four years. We look forward to interacting with you.

FACULTY SPEAKS

It’s a pleasure to introduce the Batch of 2020 to prospective employers. Having interacted with them for a period of two semesters, I am impressed with their intellectual capabilities and communication skills. Their research qualities highlight their clear understanding of concepts and the eagerness to learn. I wish them all the best for their future and I am sure they will do justice to any work which is assigned to them.

Prof. (Dr.) Harpreet KaurProfessor (Law) Taught Corporate Law

The ‘20 batch is NLUD’s crème de la crème in the making! I had an opportunity to teach them a compulsory paper on Intellectual Property, specially covering Patents, Plant Varieties and Trade Secrets in their penultimate year. I must emphasise that the batch is very hard working and shows great promise. They are a bunch of curious listeners and argumentative, too. I am sure they will bring out their best by employing the skills and legal knowledge they have acquired during their academic journey with NLUD. I am hopeful posterity will remember the ‘20 batch as having contributed to a vibrant campus culture and for serving the best of academic traditions during their campus life. True to NLUD’s vision and objectives, I am sure they will be professionally-competent and socially-relevant as they begin their respective journeys in the legal world.

Mr. Yogesh PaiAssistant Professor (Law) Taught Intellectual Property Rights

It is my privilege as a teacher to write a note of recommendation for the class of 2020. I have taught them a few courses and also had the occasion to interact closely with them in a few conferences. Teaching them each course has been a pleasure as they have been keen students in class, participating in class discussions and never failing to initiate interaction. I have always been impressed with their inquisitiveness and quest for knowledge through attendance at symposiums, seminars and personal communication with other experienced professionals in the field. I am confident that they will continue to display the same level of commitment and enthusiasm as they did at National Law University Delhi.

Dr. Risham GargAssociate Professor (Law) Taught Law of Contracts

I had a very enriching experience while teaching the batch of 2020. I have witnessed the overall performance of the batch getting better with each passing year of their stay at the National Law University, Delhi. This is a very focused batch of students not only in academic and research activities but also other extra and co-curricular activities. Students of this batch are very well - mannered, hardworking, dedicated, professional and disciplined. I am sure, with all these qualities, each and every student of Batch of 2020 will be a valuable asset to any institution that they will join.
