Spinal fusion surgery is a very serious procedure that

requires a good amount of recovery time, because this

type of surgery involves the joining of vertebrae in the

back. It is very important that patients follow

recommended recovery guidelines for specified post-

discharge intervals.

Patients generally feel very tired. It is important to keep

in mind during these days to never stay in the same

position for a long time. Taking short walks is

recommended, as well as alternating between sitting,

standing up, and lying down. It is, of course, important

to pay attention to the amount of pain you experience,

and to halt activity if the pain increases. It is also

imperative during this time to rely on other people for

most activities, such as washing dishes, preparing

meals, and lifting anything heavier than eight pounds.

The incision will show signs of healing, provided that it

is washed with soap and water at least one time a day.

Any prescription medication patients were taking

directly after surgery will have to be gradually reduced

until the patient is off them completely. Movement

during this time should still be done carefully and

slowly.

1 WEEK TO 1 MONTH

During this time, the fusion begins to set. This means

that bending, twisting, and lifting should be kept to a

minimum, if done at all. After the 6 week mark, physical

therapy can begin. It is incredibly beneficial in helping

patients ease back into regular movement without

further injury. It will target certain muscles in the back

to be strengthened as well.

Exercise becomes a central part of recovery. Gentle

exercise will help build muscle tone in the back again to

allow for more movement. Stretching, strengthening,

and aerobic conditioning are all recommended to have

patients moving normally again without further

complications. Spinal patients overall tend to

experience fewer issues if they are in shape.
