United States Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service Approved by the World Agricultural Outlook Board/USDA Circular Series FOP 02 - 11 February 2011 Record Early Sales of New Crop U.S. Soybeans Signal Robust Demand Ahead Although new crop U.S. soybeans are yet to be planted, 5 million tons have already been sold through late January. Eighty percent of these early season sales are to China. Historically, new crop sales of this magnitude are not reached until late March or early April, so this unprecedented sales pace suggests a continuation of the strong foreign demand that has contributed to higher prices. Combined with the forecast tight U.S. ending stocks, the spike in sales and the implied strong foreign demand would leave little cushion in the event of any potential shortfall in 2011 crop. South American harvests are expected to be smaller than last year contributing little year- over-year increase in world supply. Meanwhile, global import growth continues to expand further pressuring supply. The March 31 Prospective Plantings report will give an indication of how U.S. farmers are responding to these unusual market factors.

Record Early Sales of New Crop U.S. Soybeans Signal Robust Demand Ahead

Although new crop U.S. soybeans are yet to be planted, 5 million tons have already been sold through late January. South American harvests are expected to be smaller than last year contributing little year-over-year increase in world supply. Meanwhile, global import growth continues to expand further pressuring supply. The March 31 Prospective Plantings report will give an indication of how U.S. farmers are responding to these unusual market factors.

OVERVIEW Global soybean exports are up supported by crop gains in Brazil and Paraguay. No changes are made in the U.S. soybean balance sheet. The January U.S. export bids, FOB Gulf, averaged $538 per ton, the highest since August 2008. Global vegetable oil prices have risen 25 percent since October 2010 in response to tighter supplies, particularly palm oil. Palm oil stocks in Indonesia, the top producer, are reduced due to larger domestic disappearance, primarily in the oleo-chemical industry. SOYBEAN PRICES U.S. export bids, FOB Gulf, in January averaged $538 per ton, the highest since August 2008. Strong demand for exports primarily from China continues to support higher prices. As of the week-ending January 27, U.S. soybean sales commitments (outstanding sales plus accumulated exports) to China totaled 24.1 million tons, compared to 21.5 million a year ago. Total commitments for the 2010/11 crop to the world are 38.4 million tons compared to 34.9 million for the same period last year. TRADE CHANGES IN 2010/11 • Argentina’s soybean exports are cut 0.9 million tons to 11.6 million on a reduced

crop.

• Brazil’s soybean exports are up 0.9 million tons to a record 32.3 million in response to a larger crop and competitiveness against Argentine crop.

• Paraguay’s soybean exports are up 0.5 million tons to 5.6 million on a larger crop.

• Canada’s rapeseed exports are up 0.4 million tons to 6.8 million to reflect a stronger

export pace.

• Ukraine’s sunflowerseed exports are up 0.3 million tons to 0.4 million supported by a larger crop and sustained demand from the EU-27.

• Indonesia’s palm oil exports are cut 0.2 million tons to 17.9 million in response to

stronger domestic use.
