WHAT CRITERIA WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MODS USE IN REMOVING SUBMISSIONS? Politics:

“Less political clickbait”, “Remove political content and titles”, “Stricter moderation of political content”, “no politics and fewer current events, they turn political”, "too political bullshit, at risk of being accused of being too political", "Less politics/click bait and less editorial titles", "Too political, quack articles, clickbait", "non economic political views"

Sensationalist Headlines:

"I mentioned it earlier, sensationalist headlines.", "remove sensationallist submissions worthy of /r/politics", "Highly editorialized political clickbait (I'm looking at you, income inequality) should be removed", "Economists agree" "inequality"

Opinion Pieces:

"Opinions and editorials", "No opinion pieces"

Seriousness:

"Non-credible sources/people", "Subjective analysis of a website's credibility and/or motives.", "Claim substantiation.", "Correct Information“, "If they do not cite a study or discuss a study, give it the boot.", "Biased sources", maturity, seriousness", "Irrelevance, repetition, continuity failure, attempted humour", "Should not be repeating introductory material (such as Basic Income spam)", "Submissions need to be more academic"

Related to Economics:

"Relation to economics", "High pop news content", "Economic relevance", "Irrelevant to economics or too political", "Relevance, both in topic and to economics",

Other:

"No censorship", "Clear Troll bait removed", "Misleading posts should be removed", "Board of mods can vote to pull down a submission", "spam", "crappy content, editorialized titles", "personal attacks", "Removing topics that are either currently being well covered or ones that are not relevant to the sub at all."

Page 20: /r/economics Survey Results

OTHER FEEDBACK ON SUBMISSIONS

“Perhaps something to discourage spamming too many submissions on the same topic, especially when it's done in a way that promotes a "circlejerk".”

“Requirement to include a submission statement such as in r/truereddit”

“make a bot that condemn unreliable and click-bait source”

“create a bot that analyse comment and if it's bad economics post it on the badeconomics sub”

“There is no functional definition for "blogspam”

“The bots are useless - central bank posts papers few in the sub can understand, shares posts stuff that no one engages with”

Page 21: /r/economics Survey Results

WHAT CRITERIA WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MODS USE IN REMOVING COMMENTS? Civility “Be nice and polite”, “More of a crackdown on nastiness and politics.”, “Breach of ToS, civil discourse norms, etc.”, “vulgarity, attacks, insults”

Censorship “No personal attacks, but that's it”, “No censorship”, “Let comments stay”

Seriousness “Statistics, sourcing”, “They need to be able to cite legitimate sources.”

Politics “Poorly informed political analysis. Commentators always draw conclusions that are either inaccurate or cannot be definitely concluded from the information given in the article or research paper. Often times these opinions tend to be left leaning like the "average" redditor but it happens the other way as well.”

“Honestly? Studying/studied economics or a related field. However, I understand this is not viable. Not allowing people to cite Wikipedia; move commenters away from normative statements.”, “If someone gets way too political, remove it.”

Page 22: /r/economics Survey Results

OTHER FEEDBACK ON COMMENTS

“The comment sections are often a ghost town and more technical or academic submissions are often not even voted on so it's difficult to engage especially if its a topic being needlessly politicized.”

“Perhaps experiment with removing downvotes?“

“Ideally, the rule would be the same as /r/AskHistorians and (I think) /r/AskSocialScience which requires sources for top level comments.”

“Too lenient, community sorting via voting is ok, but reddit really likes simplistic analysis so those comments rise to the top”

“Utilize the bureau members more for directing discussion.”

“Lower the bar a bit for removing personal attacks”

Page 23: /r/economics Survey Results

SECTION IV: POLICY SUGGESTIONS

Page 24: /r/economics Survey Results

CONTENT SUGGESTIONS

“I would think it would be beneficial if "classes" were added. Maybe spend a few weeks or months going over certain Econ topics. Game theory, labor markets, macro, monetary, etc.”

“The /r/math everything about x threads have worked well on that subreddit and could be a nice thing to add to the subreddit.”

“Introduction of a 'moron monday' such as in r/fitness for people to ask questions.”

"Monthly Journal Day”, “more days like journal days”

“Expand the flair to a 'second' tier of informed commentors OR follow the AskSocialScience flair system”

Page 25: /r/economics Survey Results

POLICY SUGGESTIONS

“Discourage low-effort comments, like memes, one-liners, blatantly simplistic opinions and so on.”

“Temorary bans for very low karma”

“Stop letting people cite Wikipedia.”

“I don't know if there is a way for you to bump content that has fewer comments but large number of views above similar content but that might be a solution.”

“Seriously, ban blogspot and youtube.”, “I'd ban HuffPo and related sites for a month to see what happens.”
