Newly discovered factoids re FW­190 and Ta­152 aircraftBy Hal Marshman Sr.I am now in possession of brandy new copies ofboth the Jerry Crandall books on the FW­190Dora, plus Tom Hitchcock's volume on the TA­152. These are high quality books with much inthe way of color photography, plus copious colorprofiles, all done to a high standard. They alsocontain detailed technical drawings, all very welldone. I've already picked up 4 little factoids, afterspending much of yesterday just perusing......1) Contrary to popular opinion, as shown by themodels some prominent modelers have done ofthe Ta­152, They did carry an antenna cable,with 2 different styles of attachment points,depending on if the rudder was metal or wood.2) Many early FW­190D aircraft were fitted withthe old FW­190A style canopy, WITHOUT thetensioner, thus the cable would slack when thecanopy was opened, just as the blown typecanopy equipped versions did.3) The tail unit, to include the far aft section ofthe fuselage, were sub contracted and arrived atthe assembly point fully painted and assembledthemselves. The photo in the book shows afactory room filled with tail assemblies, andunusually, the undersides of the stabilizers (notincluding the elevators)

were in natural metal finish, not painted. At thispoint, it's not known by me whether or not thoseundersurfaces were indeed painted before theplanes were sent on to their operational units, ornot.4) Here's a biggie...It's only apparent in a very fewphotos, but the rear fuselage aft of the canopy hasa very visible overlap seam, extending some 2inches or so onto the right side of the upperfuselage. It appears that the "plug" joining the tailunit to the fuselage, also has a top seam, but thatone is on the centerline. There's an excellent set ofdrawings in the rear of one of the Dora volumes,that depicts this quite nicely.4) Many ­9 Doras were equipped with plywoodflaps, as were the D­11 and D­13 machines, not tomention the Ta­152s, On the outside, they wouldbe painted RLM 76, while the interior wasvarnished . Now, this is plywood, not furnituregrade fine wood with rxotic graining. The clearvarnish may have had a slight orange or reddishtint..5) According to actual conversations with ex­Luftwaffe pilots and maintenance crewmen, itwould seem that the preferred name used inconversation for the Ta­152s was "Tank". For thoseof you not in the know, Kurt Tank was the designerof the FW­190 and Ta­152 aircraft, as well as manyother Focke Wulf designs. As an honorific, the first2 letters of his name, Ta, would be officially used todesignate the design. It was also used todesignate the twin engined "Moskito" as the Ta­154.

Kit Review ­ 7.5cm Pak 40 Anti­Tank GunBy Bob MaginaThis kit No. AF­35071 by AFV is a little gem ofan anti tank gun. When you open the box it isloaded with lots of little detail. No flash orwarpage anywhere. Fit of parts is spot on. Thekit includes a turned aluminum barrel, a photoetch gun shield and nicely detailed rubber tires.About the only after market I added was theBrass Shield Bolts also by AFV.The kit can be built either in tow or enplaced. Itsan either or choice. You must pick one or theother during the build and your choice is lockedin for the rest of the build. No going back.My only problem was with the wheel/axleassemblies. They are very fragile. In handlingthe completed gun for painting and weathering Ibroke off both wheel assemblies at least 2­3times. Other than that once the gun is completedis is nose heavy due to the aluminum barrel. Butno problem as I was mounting it on a baseanyways.I painted the gun with Model Master enamelsand tried a bottle of the Vallejo washes. Thesewashes are great. Paint chipping with a spongand some dusting and I was done.I mounted the gun on a basein desert mode, added ammocreates from AFV for it andI was done.Great kit, priced around$30­40. Great buy for whatyou get. Its a long waybetter than the oldTamiya or Italeri offerings.

We also voted tosponsor a trophy pack for NoreastConagain this year.Also at the March meeting Norm Robbieannounced that he was headed of towarmer climes, Florida, and had alreadystarted to search out IPMS chaptersthere. Norm’s dad passed this winter, justa matter of days after my mom. So withfewer ties to this area and a hope that jobhunting there will be better than here,

The March meeting was well attended,even though it snowed on Friday. I thinkthat because we cancelled the Februarymeeting many members made an effort toshow. Even Bob Don made an appearanceon his way to Maine for a family party. Bobsaid that any rumor about him stopping byjust to secure a raffle ticket was untrue. GilCosta came with a stack of 1/350 ship kitshe was selling, and with some success. Ibelieve he has a few of them left. If youthink you might be interested, he had aposting on the forum listing the availablekits.We have a date for BayCon 2013, it‘s thefirst Sunday in November, Nov. 13th, at thesame location, the Knights of Columbushall in South Attleboro. And as a reminder,the Kwasny Challenge this year is an 1/35M4 Sherman and the Terry SumnerChallenge is the1/48 T­6 Texan/Harvard. Ifyou haven’t got a kit yet you better get yourhustle on.I don’t mean to keep bringing up the forumbut there has been a lot of chatter thereabout our awards and award systemrecently. You may want to check that out. Itlooks at this moment that we will have anopen discussion about our awards at theMay meeting. Some of what has beendiscussed is Fourth place or no 4th place;Medals or the plaques; generic or notgeneric. So if you have an opinion on thissubject you may want to polish it up and getready to present your views. Many peoplewill want to speak and we want everyone tohave a chance, so please try to be conciseand factual. Please don’t speculate onsomething based on a conversation youoverheard. And bring any documentationyou may have to support your case.The latest issue of Fine Scale has a goodarticle on etched brass, the do’s and don’ts.I’ve learned a couple thing I was doingwrong and another that I should have beendoing and hadn’t. As I sit here typing,looking at the pile of club business thathas piled up on top of my computer overthe past couple months I feel that I am notfilling my elected roll. Many of youknow of my mom’s passing, (thanks to youall for offering your sympathies andcondolences), her funeral occupied a goodchunk of my time, and still is withpaperwork still arriving, and I’m not theexecutor of the estate. The evening of herwake I was devastated by the end of theevening. I’m not looking for sympathyhere, I’m just explaining. As family andfriends arrived that evening I learned thatmy cousin Bob, in California, lost his wifein November. One morning she didn’twake up. A couple of my Mother’s cousinswere not doing well. And my cousinDiane’s husband was in the hospitalfighting cancer. Throw in a couple goodsize snow storms, three days withoutpower, and three additional family funeralsand I haven’t had a lot of free time andnow its tax season. The last funeral wasfor my friend John. John DiFronzo and Iwent to grammar school together. ComeJr. high, we met down the end of mystreet, along with Peter Mazur, andheaded off to the Mary E. Curley School in

Jamaica Plain, 6 ft. 2 John, 6 ft. 3 Peter, and 5ft. Me, six miles uphill both ways, in snow!(Really just 1.2 miles, but the uphill both waysis true.) In high school we went separate waysbut imagine my surprise when John shows upat a family event with my cousin Diane on hisarm. So by now you are thinking, ok, it’s acute story but what’s it got to do with modelsand model building? Think back to when Iwrote about building models as a kid andtrading built models for comic books and armymen, John was one of those guys. I’mbeginning to think that 2013 is not going tomake my top ten list. (As I go to put thiscolumn to bed and send it to Bob, I am againpreparing to head to another family funeral.)

Newly discovered factoids re FW­190 and Ta­152 aircraft ContinuedBy Hal Marshman Sr.

I said I'd be back when I found out more newdetails about the long nosed Focke Wulf 190airplanes, so here are a couple of more littlepieces of Information.1) Looking at the canopy equipment, it would

now seem that the very first 190D seriesairplanes were equipped with the 190A style flattopped canopy, and possessed of a tensioneron the antenna cable, keeping it taut when thecanopy was in its open position. At some pointearly on , the tensioner was dispensed with, andsubsequently, quite a few 190D birds wereproduced equipped with the early style canopy,sans tensioner. In any event, the majority of the190D and Ta­152 production were fitted with theblown style canopy, without a tensioner, and thenew bulky type headrest brace. Now, on allthese airplanes without tensioners, the antennacable would sag to the point where it rested onthe canopy rear fairing, and the fuselage rearitself. You will see some "Langnasen" withseverely chipped rear canopy fairings, andthat's because of the abrasive action of thesagging cable dragging across the paint. I mightadd that from the very beginning of the A series190s, the center frame running lengthwise ontop of the canopy was not a solid frame, but ahinge, allowing the bottom of the canopy tosqueeze inward, thus following the elongatedtriangular shape of the area behind the cockpit.(Remember, we're dealing with plexiglass here,not actual unbendable glass). In the case of theearlier flat topped canopies, this hinge line onlyspanned 3/4 the length of the glass, while thelater blown hood displayed one that ran from thefront frame to the aft fairing. In all FW­190models, the antenna cable would enter thecanopy through this frame. Ta­152 fighters weredifferent, in that the cable entered about 2inches aft of where the glass ends, and themetal fairing begins. I might add that some lateFW­190A fighters, and F and G fighter bomberswere also equipped with the blown canopy, sans

tensioner.2). As most folks know, the length of the

FW­190A was stretched to create the D andTa­152 fuselages. Part of this wasaccomplished by inserting a "plug" some 500MM in length between the rear fuselage, andtail assemblies. A very interesting small detailhas come to light regarding that plug on D­11and D­13 machines.The bulk of the plug wasunpainted natutral metal, with camouflagebeing only applied to the very top. In thecase of the very popular Papagei Staffel redand white bottomed planes, the bottom of theplug was indeed painted to match thebalance of the bottom. Naturally, in thosecases where the Reichsverteidegung IDstripes were applied, they would be paintedover that area. I can only say study yourphotos very closely. I might also add that thatplug displayed a longitudinal seam at boththe top and the bottom.

3) For those interested in the PapageiStaffel, they were from III/Jg­54, and hadstarted out flying take off and landing coverfor the jets of Kommando Nowotny. Later on,when Jv­44 was formed by Gen AdolfGalland, these birds were again selected toperform that service. The undersides wererepainted in red, with narrow white stripesrunning fore and aft on the fuselage bottoms,and also chordwise under the wings andstabilizers. There were 5 such FWs, 3 beingD­9s and 2 being D­11s. 4 of the pilots areknown, Leutnant Heinze Sachensberg thehead of the unit, Hauptman WaldemarWubke ,Leutnant karl­Heinz Hofmann, andOberleutnant Klaus Faber. The FWs werenumbered in red with white outlines, andwere 1, 3, and 13 for the D­9s, and 2 and 4for the D­11s. Each pilot had a motto orsaying of his choosing under the left cockpitside lettered in white, and an insigniaconsisting of a black and white quarteredsquare surrounded by a red ring."Langnasen"= Long noses"Papagei"= Parrot
