About Laura Martinez-SanzLaura Martínez-Sanz has been a member of the Madrid Bar Association since 1995. She specialized in Criminal Law from the very beginning
and spent the first years of her career at Oliva-Ayala law firm, which she rejoined after managing for eight years the Criminal Law
Department of Baker & McKenzie international law firm, where she acquired broad experience in advisory services and defense provided
to large Spanish and international companies. She has a command of all areas of Criminal Law, and her training and practice led her to
engage particularly intensely in business or economic, patrimonial and company Criminal Law.
She has been teaching as a Professor of Criminal Law at the Carlos III University and also, at the Complutense University of Madrid. With
twenty years of experience in criminal litigation, Laura Martínez-Sanz was selected by the prestigious “Best Lawyers” as well as “Chambers
and Partners” publication among the most relevant lawyers in her practice area (Dispute Resolution: Corporate Crime).
Languages: Spanish, English and a basic knowledge of French.
Firm ProfileOliva-Ayala provides legal advisory and defense services in special criminal cases, in what is known as “Business Criminal Law” or
“Economic Criminal Law”.
The exclusively criminal focus of the law firm provides the output clients require for complex situations, with full and personalized dedication.
Regular participation by staff members in national and international congresses and symposiums ensures that they are up-to-date with
the problems posed by an increasingly diverse practice. In turn, the abundant scientific publications of our lawyers bear witness to their
capacity to seek innovative solutions to the specific problems raised by clients.
The international procedural experience of our lawyers extends to proceedings in the USA, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Italy,
Portugal and others, and also to the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, the European Court of Human Rights and other international
jurisdictional bodies. This experience surpasses the barriers of Spanish Criminal Law, and opts for qualified advice with a clearly international
vocation.
The firm and its lawyers have been selected by the world’s most reputed directories, Best Lawyers and Chambers and Partners, as
recommended law firm and professionals in the ranking of prestigious law firms specialized in Economic and Business Criminal Law. They
are also included among the most relevant lawyers in each specialization by the magazine Corporate Counsel and others published in
the United Kingdom and the United States.
Oliva-Ayala Abogados opts for social commitment as one of the fundamental values of our law firm, and offers pro bono advisory services
to individuals and non-profit-making organisations with limited access to legal services.
Areas of expertise The firm specializes in the defense of procedural or pre-procedural interests (defense or, as the case may be, complainant) in all areas of
Traditional Criminal Law, and has a substantial specialization in Business Criminal Law. Accordingly, by way of example:
Economic and company Criminal Law: • Patrimonial • Insolvency • Corporate • Fiscal • Intellectual and industrial property • Securities Market • Civil Service crime – bribery,
corruption, embezzlement of public funds, influence peddling – • Environmental and town planning Criminal Law • Professional negligence
or others, including work accidents • Misrepresentation (public, official, business and private documents) • Criminal and civil protection
of honour and other personal rights • Procedural criminal protection of fundamental rights • Reports and opinions on any area of Criminal
Law • International criminal law • Extradition • European arrest and handover warrant • International penitentiary law
Problems with criminal legality usually extend beyond national borders and require a multi-jurisdictional specialization with an in-depth
knowledge of the increasingly exhaustive international criminal legislation as well as legislation of the various European Union Member
States and Community regulations.
• Corporate liability: Preventive criminal defence, compliance policies.
The firm helps Spanish and international clients develop and implement what has traditionally been called a preventive criminal defense
policy. The current evolution of criminal law imposes the need to introduce programs for legal compliance and the preservation of
corporate criminal liability (Criminal Compliance). Prevention, detection and action are the three basic pillars that can limit the criminal
liability of legal persons, their directors and employees.

About Katrina Vollentine
Katrina VollentinePartner at Wollen Michelmore
Email: [email protected] | Website: www.wollenmichelmore.co.uk
I joined Wollen Michelmore LLP (in its previous guise) in 2007 and became a partner in 2009. I am the head of the firm’s
Private Client department, which consists of a team of 16 lawyers across our six offices which are based across North
and South Devon. I work out of our Torquay office, but spend time supporting and managing the department in all our
locations. The firm has 16 partners and as well as offering the standard high street practice type work, we have built a
reputation for doing complex and less routine work, and we do it to a very high standard.
As head of the Private Client department, my role involves mentoring the lawyers in the department as well as dealing
with the day to day business of managing the clients and getting through the work. For a South West regional firm, we
are a good size which means that we have sufficient breadth across the department to deal with specialist matters. This
includes contested estates and trusts, tax planning, trust administration, mental capacity matters and foreign estates as
well as the more routine probate, wills, trusts, powers of attorney, deputyships etc. I am keen to make sure that the more
junior members in the department become confident in their competence and find their niche. Everybody works most
efficiently when they are doing something they enjoy and which drives them. I need to be available to manage the
department in all areas and I am well supported by my two other private client partners in this.
From the client’s perspective, I principally assist people who lack the mental capacity to manage their own affairs, either
through illness, disability or acquired brain injury. I am a specialist in all matters relating to the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
I have a team of four lawyers who directly support me in this work. I’ve been doing this type of work for over 20 years and
I’m still passionate about protecting the rights of some of the most vulnerable people in our society.
I am currently one of only 60 professionals in England and Wales to be appointed to the Office of the Public Guardian’s
panel of last resort deputies. As deputy I manage the property and financial affairs of those people who lack the mental
capacity to manage these matters themselves. I have also acted as deputy and as attorney in relation to health and
welfare matters. Being on the panel results in my appointment as deputy in complex matters including where there has
been a necessity to revoke a power of attorney, where there is no suitable person to act as a deputy and disputes about
who should be appointed as deputy. These sorts of disputes are difficult to deal with and are often fraught with emotion
and misunderstanding. I find that being a full member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Specialists
is of immense benefit in these situations. Additionally, I advise clients and deal with a full range of Court of Protection
applications which include applying for gifts, statutory wills, welfare decisions - all of which may be contested.
My typical file includes Court of Protection and office of the Public Guardian work, powers of attorney and related matters,
and advising and assisting clients in relation to health care and welfare issues both in a care home setting and in their own
home. I support and encourage my clients to make their own choices about their lives where they are able to do so. You
might think that sounds obvious but I’ve been involved in many disputes where the best interests of a vulnerable person
have been ignored by a close family member or carer in favour of an “easier option.” I also give advice on state/local
authority support and funding including applications and appeals for NHS continuing care fees, and challenges to those
decisions where necessary.
I have a number of other professional memberships: I am a full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and
of Solicitors for the Elderly, as well as being a full member of the Association of Contentious Trust and Probate Practitioners.
