Only Goodwin
Back in the 1 9 70s George Goodwin, a master carpenter and home
builder, was handpicking the finest materials to build his own dream home. He acquired some
longleaf pine logs a fisherman friend recovered from the Suwannee River and the rest is history.
The virgin quality, rich red patina and amazing grains of this “underwater” heart pine, as well
as the rarity and historical significance, became his passion. He realized others would value this
treasure and opened Goodwin Heart Pine Company in 1976.
Since then, Goodwin’s wood has won numerous awards including the prestigious 2002
Designer’s Choice Wood Floor by the American Society of Interior Designers, and Floor of the Year
in 2000, 1999 and 1997 from the National Wood Flooring Association.
Monticello, the Brooklyn Bridge and many homes from
the 18th and 19th centuries are just a few examples where
antique heart pine has stood the test of time.
Heart cypress trees were the true giants
Original-growth bald cypress trees were also logged
more than a century ago and are recovered by Goodwin
from Southern rivers. Many of these amazing prehistoric
survivors were more than 1000 years old and over 100 feet
tall. Prized for resistance to insects and water damage, this
wood was a favorite of Frank Lloyd Wright.
Why River-RecoveredTM wood is better
In our experience the densest and best logs were the
ones that slipped loose from the rafts and sank to the river
bottom. The cool waters preserve the logs in pristine
condition, which results in wood not only more stable and
durable, but more alive and richer in color...just as it
would have been 200 years ago.
Goodwin Heart Pine is the only well established company
recovering these virgin-growth logs. Today, just like yesterday,
heart pine and heart cypress are cherished for their special
qualities. This wood will last for generations to come.

Do not make the mistake of comparing our antique woods to new heart pine,“old-growth,” or non-native species. New heart pine (not offered byGoodwin) is usually 70-90 years old; is softer than antique heart pine with 50 to 100% heart; has knots up to 2 inches; has only about 4 growth rings;and is pale yellow with some red. Some manufacturers may call this “old growth” wood and/or may cut down existing trees for manufacturing. Thiswood as well as other woods harvested outside the country, simply can not be compared to antique heart pine.
Select grain is achieved by sawing flat through the log and results in a blend of both arching
grain and vertical grain in planks up to 10 inches wide (wider widths available for lumber). Goodwin pro-
vides a high percentage of vertical grain (or about 75 to 85 percent) for wide plainsawn projects.
Vertical grain is a pinstriped pattern achieved along the full length of the board by using the quar-
tersawing process (a more intricate sawing method that does incur more waste). Goodwin provides 100%
vertical grain, with growth rings no more than 45 degrees perpendicular to the face.
Curl y grain is an extremely rare, natural burled grain. This unique and luminous pattern is
found in the outer wood of less than 1% of all reclaimed logs. It is perfect for a stunning conversation
piece, inlays on flooring and cabinetry, and other specialty projects.

iver-recovered™ antique wood does cost more than average flooring, but that’s because it’s not average.Because it’s original growth and was preserved underwater, it’s stronger, healthier and more beautifulthan other woods. Because it is rich and rare, it also adds value over time. When shopping, consider
that it never wears out, is easier to maintain, is recommended for those with allergies, and adds so much character and warmth to your most important environment.
