The defendant, Jack J. Kozer of 68 Hospital Road was driving east on East Main Street , when his auto was in collision with the rear of a vehicle operated b y William D. Schmidt , 40 , of 44 Case Avenue , Patchogue, Police said. • The Schmidt car was knocked about 50 feet , police said , and Mr. Schmidt escaped serious injury to his neck when his seat was broken in his 1952 auto and he was thrown into the back of his sedan. The accident occurred about 5;50 p.m. Mr. Kozer was admitted to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital with a possible fractured nose and concussion. On Monday, hos- pital authorities said he was in fair condition. Mr, Kozer' s arraignment was adjourned Tuesday by Sixth Dis- trict Court Judge Morton Weiss- man unti l today, and the defendant continued free in his own recog- nizance. Salis- bury, 43 , of 45 TaJmege Lane, East Hampton, Chief Deputy of the Suffolk Sheriffs Office, who died of a heart attack February 3. Mr. Salisbury wts stricken «t his office in Riverhead last Wednesday at about 4:30 p.m. and was rushed to Southampton Hospital in an ambulance. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 5:35 p.m. Mr. Salisbury was named Chief Deputy on J an. 1 , 1963after serv- ing three years as a lieutenant. He began his career with the of- fice in 1946 as a jail guard. During World War II , he served with the Army Air Force and was recalled to active duty in the Korean campaign. An active civic worker in East Hampton, he was a member of the local Lions Clu b, the V.F.W. post , the Town Republican Committee and the Suffolk County Police As- sociation. He was also active in the East Hampton Little League. He served for a time as East Hampton Town Republican Chairman. Sheriff Frank A. Gross described Salisbury as a "de- voted peace officer and a credit to our department. His death was a tragic loss , " the Sheriff said.
