“When South Africa bid to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, our bid represented the hopes of a nation. We hoped that hosting the largest sporting event in the world would showcase to the world our wonderful country, its people, our capabilities and our vision for the future.” “We worked tirelessly for many years across all sectors, from government departments to the private sector and as citizens, to make sure we hosted the best World Cup ever. We planned, invested and implemented our vision in the face of many challenges, of fierce skepticism and sometimes even of outright disbelief that we could deliver on our commitments. “The World Cup was never about the hosting of a tournament, but rather about building a legacy for our country and our continent – a legacy in terms of amongst others infrastructure development, economic growth, skills development, job creation, nation building and brand awareness. We as South Africans believed, and the world came to believe with us.” South African Minister of Tourism

…current financial crisis is the worst the world has seen since the
Great Depression of the 1930s. For younger generations,
accustomed to mild recessions of the new phase of
globalization, the misery of the Great Depression is hitherto
nothing more than a distant legend…

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan was quoted as saying that South Africa will recoup the R38 Billion spent on hosting the tournament given that it had attracted over 500,000 visitors and created about 130,000 jobs.

“Aside from these physical projects, the most important legacy of the World Cup is
likely to be a social legacy.
The Cup has given South Africans a new source of pride. Pulling in the third most
spectators of any World Cup behind Germany in 2006 and the U.S. in 1994, South
Africa's perception as a successful World Cup host has been legitimized.
For a nation that has struggled with the demons of its horrific past, the World Cup
marks a major positive point in the young democracy's history, second only to the
historic end of apartheid and election of Nelson Mandela as its president in 1994.”

The Gautrain Project had a plethora of successful achievements during the 2010 calendar year. The following are arguably some of the most significant achievements of the year, which saw the operations commence on 8 June 2010, well in time for the start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The Gautrain experienced unexpectedly high passenger demand during the first months of operations. People were prepared to stand for more than an hour in a queue just to get a ticket. By 16 September 2010, we already had our One Millionth Passenger, and indications are that the Airport Service is particularly popular for tourists as well as business people.
