Americans are in lovewith remodeling. Tele-vision networks such asHGTV and DIY run 24hours a day with showslike “BATHtastic” and“Design Star.” Maga-zines, websites andblogs feature happyhome owners gushingover perfect roommakeovers. And withthe continuing chal-lenging economy, morehome owners have de-cided to stay in theircurrent home longer, which has created
higher demand for re-modeling. A survey released by
the National Associa-tion of Home Builders(NAHB) in 2012 showsthat common remodel-ing projects have in-creased, compared to asimilar survey from2010. And nearly 50percent of remodelersreport seeing an in-crease in the number ofhome owners who un-dertake remodels toavoid moving, com-pared to the 2010 find-
ings.Bathroom and kitchen
remodeling remain thetwo most commontypes of jobs, as theyhave been consistentlysince 2001. After 2009,however, bathroom andkitchen remodelingswitched places—bath-rooms became the mostfrequent type of job forprofessional remodel-ers. Seventy-eight per-cent of the surveyrespondents cited bath-room remodeling asone of the most com-mon jobs, an all-timehigh.Home owners are fre-
quently asking for ahigh-end spa feel totheir new bathrooms, with features and mate-rials such as televisionscreens built into mir-rors, exotic wood fin-ishes, recycled glass
tiles and so-phisticatedlightingsys-tems.Otherpopularfeatures in-clude those thatenable a home owner tostay in their home asthey age; includingstep-in tubs and showerstall benches and rails. Both kitchen and
bathroom remodelingprojects were up 17percent from two yearsago. Other popular jobs
were window and doorreplacements, room ad-ditions, handymanservices and wholehouse remodeling, al-though whole house re-modeling is downsignificantly from itspeak in the mid-2000s.
The motiva-tion behind
manyhomeowners’decision
to re-model has
changed aswell. The top two rea-sons for remodelingwere the need to repairor replace old or out-dated components andthe desire for better andnewer amenities. Morethan 50 percent of re-modelers said that thesetwo reasons for remod-eling have becomemore common over thepast two years. In contrast, more than
20 percent of remodel-ers said there was a de-crease in customersremodeling to increasehome values as an in-vestment or to prepare
for a sale (whether dis-tressed or not). Remod-eling to accommodate achange in the numberof people living in thehome also received lowscores. Whether they are in-
spired by the amazingmakeovers shown ontelevision shows, ortheir changing lifestylenecessitates repurpos-ing spaces to makemore efficient use oftheir home’s squarefootage, home ownersare turning to profes-sional remodelers tohelp improve theirhome. For more information
