Yes, granite can chip. It would take quite a bit of force to chip granite, but it can happen. Repairing of a granite chip can be done as long as the chip that was broken off was salvaged. Go to your local hardware store and purchase an epoxy. Squirt a sufficient amount into the hole and then press the chip back in where it belongs. Allow for ample drying time before cleaning excess epoxy from the area by using a sharp blade. If the chipped area was a small divet, simply spread the epoxy into the divit, allowing it to dry completely, then smooth off any rough edge with a blade.

Back-siphonage is caused when the water pressure drops in the water piping sucking the water out of tubs, pools, laundry tubs and ponds where a hose or faucet outlet is under water. The water and anything that is mixed in the water will make its way back to the water to be redistributed -- some times to your neighbors -- when the water pressure is returned. Never leave the end of a hose underwater even when the water is running. A hose left into the jug to mix weed killer can siphon into a home when the water supply to the house is shut off to repair a leak inside. It has happened.

What can a home owner do to prevent foundation leaks during heavy rains? An inspection outside the house should be the first item. If the house does not have rain gutters, install them. If gutters are present make sure they are properly sloped and free of debris. Gutters either need to be cleaned several times a year or consider the installation of a gutter protection system such as Leafproof. There should be an adequate number of downspouts and they should run as far away from the base of the house as is practical. Look at the slope of the ground next to the foundation of the house. The ground should slope away from the house not towards it. Only after these lower cost solutions are in place should a home owner consider a more expensive method of remediating such as retiling the foundation or installing a sump pump inside or outside the home.
