1TARGET GAMES – A CIRA Ontario Resource
REACTION BALL CATCHGame Objective
To catch a reaction ball ten times before a partner does.
Skills and Concepts ✜ Throw into a target
✜ Catch a ball
✜ Underhand toss
Strategies and Tactics ✚ Be sure to hit the target every time.
✚ Stay low.
✚ Be prepared for any kind of bounce.
Equipment ❍ One reaction ball and one hula
hoop per pair of players
Set Up ❑ Two players stand across from one another with a hula hoop in between them.
❑ After rock-paper-scissors, one player starts with the reaction ball in hand.
Instructions ☛ Player 1 is to underhand toss the reaction ball into the hula hoop. The toss cannot go higher than the
opposing player’s eyes.
☛ Player 2 must wait for the ball to hit inside of the hula hoop and then catch it on one bounce. One point is awarded for catching the ball on one bounce.
☛ If the tossing player misses the hula hoop (or throws it too high) then the opponent gets one point. The first player to ten points wins.
☛ Players alternate tossing the reaction ball.
Questions for Understanding ? Why is it important that both players use an underhand toss?
? Why is it important the ball is not higher than your opponent’s eyes?
? How could we make this game more difficult? How could we make it easier?

THROWING FOR POINTSGame Objective
To get more points than an opponent by hitting target areas on the floor.
Skills and Concepts ✜ Underhand throw ✜ Hit targets ✜ Throw for distance and accuracy
Strategies and Tactics ✚ Hit as many target lines as players can
without going over the throwing line. ✚ Get as many points as possible.
Equipment ❍ Five skipping ropes (could also use tape, chalk,
or pre-existing lines on the gym floor) ❍ Ten beanbags in two different colours ❍ Two pylons or a line
Set Up ❑ Create six lines and lay them parallel to one
another with an equal amount of space in between. ❑ Assign value to each space in between the lines. ❑ Make sure the value goes up and then down, making
the middle space the most valuable (e.g., 10, 20, 30, 20, and 10).
❑ Create a throwing line for each player using two pylons (or another line).
Instructions ☛ Players alternate throwing their beanbags into the spaces in between the lines. ☛ After they have each thrown five bags, they will count up who has more points. ☛ If a rope gets moved after a beanbag gets tossed, then fix the rope before the next throw.
Questions for Understanding ? Why is the highest value in the middle? ? Is throwing for power or accuracy more important in this game? ? Is there a difference between throwing for power and throwing for accuracy? ? Is this a fair game? Do both players have a fair chance of winning?

MIGHTY DUCKS FLOOR HOCKEY continued...
Variations ❉ Depending on the skill level of players, the target can be modified so that players have to shoot into
progressively smaller targets.
❉ Depending on equipment availability players can use smaller sticks (such as mini-sticks) or simply use floor hockey blades.
❉ The game can be played with each player sitting on a scooter.
Questions for Understanding? What did you do to make it easier to receive the ball?
? What did you do to make it easier to pass the ball?
? Was it advantageous for you to try and block your opponent’s path to the target?
? Can you force your opponent to play a certain way?
